A movie is being made of Magic: The Gathering (pretty much the only card game I play...I've played since Ice Age, and I still stink at it lol...)...

I remember several years ago they had an April Fools Joke with a poster for a Magic: The Gathering movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar lol...but this time it's for real.

It's being directed by Julio Medem, who directed the recent Sex and Lucia (which happens to be playing right now in Ottawa)...

I've never seen any of his stuff, but what reassures me that this is not going to be another Dungeons and Dragons is that all of his movies have ratings in between 7.0 and 8.0 on IMDb, so he's pretty consistent...

Dungeons and Dragons on the other hand, was made by a first time director...

Not much else is known about the movie except it's starting filming in a month (which means that people must be cast already?) and will be released in 2004...

That's pretty much all Dark Horizons had to say so far so stay tuned for more news...

I hope they get an intelligent movie out of this...it'd be sweet to see someone playing for example Serra Angel, or Serra herself!

There are alot of characters in the card game!! I bet it would have a heck of alot more CGI than your average fantasy film of today.

It would be interesting to see Leviathan (a 10/10), the things the size of a city!

I have never played the card game, but the concept is interesting. If the trailers are good, I will see this one.

Sure the concept is interesting, but you need a good story and good directing to do something just half as good as LOTR these days. I say wait and see.

The characters they could use for this are limitless! I've played the game since right after beta came out (stopped a year ago though), and I can vouch for some really interesting characters to be in this one. Such a grand history has been created with each new deck (I might say though that the history is REALLY fantasy, eg. it would need touch-ups to interest more than acouple hundered people) that there are many possibilities.

This could be a series! I am getting ahead of myself, some studio might've just hoisted it up to make $$$ off the new lust for fantasy, and the script/acting/fx/everything will suck. I really can't say much about it now, but it would be a great movie if done right!

No Magic the Gathering Movie

Friday, November 29, 2002

Source: Brainburst.com

Brainburst.com reports that a WotC PR representative has told them that "there is no magic movie in the works" in reference to this news story.

Unfortunately, MTGnews.com was unable to contact WotC PR directly - the guy with all the PR contacts (our webmaster DG) has been away for the past five days. I tried contacting WotC customer service but only recieved an earlier reply of "We have no official news on the status of this movie". I also heard rumors that the Internet Movie Database was a sort of Rumor Mill publishing anything they were emailed, but others told me that it was a fairly reputable source. Apparently not. That the director cited in the report, Julio Medem, had only previously done spanish movies hardly similar to what a Magic movie would be was another warning sign, but I was waiting for more information before I posted an update.

The rumor was baseless, but the potential for a movie is there. The basic storyline for the Rath Cycle (Tempest, Stronghold, and Exodus) would make a badass movie. The big snagging points for it would be the extremely large cast of characters and complicated backstory. Still, the posibility is there.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. The whole Rath cycle thing was pretty much most integrated story (and mercadian masques as well) where as the other cycles like Mirage and Urzas Saga less so. I stopped playing after the second Mercadian expansion so I don't know what is going on know though.

You're not missing much...the new storylines aren't that great, and the new cards sorta stink too (as in, boring unoriginal)...

though there are some cool new abilities...

damn, just a rumor again...

ah well...maybe it'll happen...someday...

the only other fantasy thing i'd want to see turned into a movie rite now is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series...but that's pretty impossible, since each book is massive, and would probably take 3 movies to cover one book alone lol.

I stopped palying after Apocalypse after I saw that my fave storyline has ended. It also was destroying my social life which is another bad thing. The whole Gerrard, Sinsay, and the Weatherlight saga was awesome though and i would like a movie getting made.

Has anyone ever read Magic: The Gathering (the series). I was obsessed with Magic when I was in Jr. High and....god. this was like five or six years ago....but I remember liking the first book. I didn't buy any more after that though.....but I stopped playing after the third or fourth series of cards...that's how long it's been, but I would definately like to see the movie when it comes out!!! I have ALWAYS been a fantasy lover, since the day i was born, and i didn't understand why fantasy movies--other than Willow...possibly...didn't do too well in the 80's @the box office....b/c that's what most people relate the 80's to---fantasy!! ......well i guess they all became cult classics and popular favorites after hitting the video shelves and debuing on cable television.....i suppose! that's what got Legend big!! hehe. and Labyrinth. and so many more.....if a movie like that came out now ppl would go crazy over it. oh well. Magic looks good.
