Here's something, You're not going to tell someone that they are an idiot for not liking books like Moby Dick or Walden, because it is recognized that there is an inherent intellect that is required to understand certain aspects of books in general. This furthers the point that yes, they read it, yes they might have understood it on one level , **BUT DIDNT HAVE THE CARE OR INTEREST IN IT TO DELVE DEEPER INTO IT'S MEANINGS, THEREBY VOIDING THE DEEPER INTELLECT INVOLVED**. Perhaps they read books of a different genre that interest them and retain certain principles and values from the literature they read. This ANALOGY was used to introduce my opinion for why people love/hate Movies!--

I know people who SLEPT through Lord of The Rings (I loved it btw), people who didn't see Reqium for a Dream because it wasn't advertised on MTV, and people who only watch movies like The Hot Chick.
Now that doesn't mean that they are idiots, or hate movies so much they see The Hot Chick :)! They have either A) Not been exposed to the proper elements of our society (the proper mix of social structure, the way a person has been treated over their life, and a thousand and one other variables) which allow for them to develop a love for lets say, fantasy films, or, B) They intentionally choose not to take an interest in that genre or to think too much about a certain movie because they would rather not! That simple!

Now for people who do, they are just the polar oppsite in a sense, look, ITS JUST A HOBBY *sort of*! People can take ANY hobby too far, but there is an acceptance people can feel upon entering theaters and watching movies that is unparalleled, there is a magic that some people feel when discussing movies with others, the whole environment almost feels as if it is some wildly demented world in which everything fits just right (except in The Hot Chick's sake;). We constantly view these microcosms, analizing, discussing, FEELING. This is why BOOKS are just as popular, just not quite as large as the movie industry (getting to be a mini-society), but they both allow for the realization of a person's view of life to come alive through other instruments than themselves. Movie buffs are just another branch upon the larger tree of the book clubs, art societies, music analicists and so on. It can just seem less productive to some because one singular thing comes out of the participation of so many people that it would appear it couldn't truly be art, and they can view actors (who appear to be the center of everything) as concieted or whatever.

Anyway, there ARE STUPID PEOPLE out there in the world, yes STUPID. I am not being ignorant, I am acknowledging that there really are DUMB MORONS out there, and that they sometimes cannot comprehend complex movies. There. Got that out of the way. I should say that just labeling someone as stupid for not understanding a movie without knowing them intimately is an ignorant thing though.

Lastly, it comes down to this I think-
There are gifted or intelligent people out there who can choose to understand the most utterly complex movies.
There are people who devote themselves to movies for the passion they have for them.
There are people who would like to act intelligent by analyzing movies :P
There are people who DO like something other than movies! And they could care less about what Gollum's Eyes are going to look like, or if the next Matrix will live up to expectations! Also they do not tend to look deeply into movies unless it touches upon a personal level or is something they are interested in outside of movies! They could give a shit!
There ARE idiots in the world, run!

I like your topic, MrBlack.

It just boils down to this: some people just watch movies or read books and they move on without ever looking back because they have other agendas on their mind whereas other folks choose to discuss and anaylze because it gives them new knowledge and takes them on a new plateau above everything else in this life. It's just a matter of perspective and what their priorities are. We can choose to learn and explore and gain knowledge and enlighten ourselves through whatever medium we select and we can also choose to ignore and live a colorless and shallow life.

My two 1/2 cents.

Thanks
and...
I agree with you for the most part except--
Are you sure that there aren't people out there that are just plain simply flat out shallow, and that is their capacity? I hate to say it, I've know people that are brick walls; you cannot ever get through to them. You can say that it there is always something behind the mask, but I really am close to vouching against that.

It's never been a well-kept secret that idiots inhabit the world. Most people (if not all) are not like the Schmoes by traveling 2 hours to see a 90 minute movie, or analyzing a movie, or seeing independent movies. Some of them just plain don't care about certain movies, since a movie about four people getting their lives ruined by drug addiction isn't exactly the most crowd-pleasing movie the casual viewer will want to see.

Look at Punch Drunk Love for instance. Considering it stars Adam Sandler, many would expect a Happy Gilmore/Billy Madison movie, when it's closer to The Wedding Singer (although they're still worlds apart). When the usual Sandler fan doesn't see the usual Sandler humor, they walk out, spread the word, and that is part of why PDL has been getting terrible numbers lately.

Lets not forget that sometimes ignorance is bliss.

I envy some people (read morons) that go through their lives without a care because they just don't know any better. I have this friend who went surfing the morning of the 9/11 attacks. I called him up and he goes "it sucks what happened, I'm going surfing... later!" That blew me away.

Yes, idiots do exist (lots of them) and unfortunately idiots arent smart enough to realize they are idiots and therein lies the problem.

Well, I think judging someone's intellgence based on their tastes in movies has always been a shaky premise at best. Before I started coming to JoBlo.com over a year ago, I would never have taken the time to see movies like REQUIEM FOR A DREAM or SESSION 9, not becaues I had bad taste, but just because I would probably never have heard of them. I have a friend who swears up and down how much he loved THIRTEEN GHOSTS but in the same breath will praise a flick like MEMENTO or TAPE. Is he an idiot, or does his taste just vary wildly?
