...Who would you pick to compose the music for your movies?
ThereWolf would choose Hans Zimmer.
Or John Williams.

I have 2 words for you.......Danny Elfman!
The man is a genius! His scores are always original, atmospheric and pulsating. John Williams is good, Hans Zimmer is OK but Mr Elfman is fucking genius (see Edward Scissorhands or any other Tim Burton film, apart from Ed Wood, if you dont believe me)!!!

Carter Burwell or John Williams
Reigh Kaufman

Air
James Newton Howard
John Williams
Badly Drawn Boy
And everything I have ever written has been done with a soundtrack in my head, so...
The Charlatans or Beth Ortonfit my stuff pretty well.

I'd love to work with Howard Shore; I loved his score for Ed Wood. Jerry Goldsmith and Hans Zimmer are great, but get a little too much exposure.

It would depend on the genre of the flick I was making:
Comedy/Drama - I'd chose Thomas Newman, his excellent scores for American Beauty & The Player prove he is the man for this job.
Fantasy/Action - John Williams. The composer who puts fun in to film music - His scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones & Superman will forever be remembered. A very close second is James Horner, a man who's name will forever be synonymous with Titanic.
Thriller - I'd probably chose James Newton Howard or Howard Shore, their music always adds to the suspence (Shore's music for The Silence Of The Lambs was probably the scariest thing about the film).
The only excellent composer I haven't mentioned is Hans Zimmer, whom I consider a Jack-of-all-trades, his music seems to compliment whatever film it's used in

howard shore, and if he was still alive, Jack Nitzsche.
Howard Shore & Danny Elfman for SCORE!
for SOUNDTRACK, I'd ask the Cohen Bros to pick the songs!

Danny Elfman- Brilliant work for Spider-Man, Sleepy Hollow, Batman, and much more.
John Williams- A wonderful career spanning many great scores including my favourite ever for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Spiderman was Danny Elfman, I'm assuming you mean Superman

I meant to write Elfman, but I had Williams on the brain.

I'll probably choose Williams. I always find his scores terrific.

I'm a big fan of Thomas Newman's scores right now, and I have a story that if I could get it turned into a movie I would love for Brian Eno to score it.

John Williams. If he doesn't accept, I know a lot of other people I could pick who are great, but Williams is the greatest, meaning I'd love to work with him someday.

I'd probably pick Clint Mansell, or Howard Shore. I've grown a bit tired of some of the other composers, so I picked those 2

John Williams without a doubt, but if he was unavailable, Lee Holdridge would be a very capable 2nd choice.

I would go with A.R. Rahman, a Indian composer of Tamil-language and Hindi-language features. He's the most imaginative film musician I ever came across...
As for Hollywood standards probably Hans Zimmer (he's the best, no doubt, about that) or John Williams (a classic) or even Phillip Glass (the true artist).

If the master were still alive, I would choose Ennio Morricone. Ecstasy Of Gold remains one of the most moving and imaginative pieces of music I have ever heard.
The only other person I wuold choose is another dead guy; Gustav Holtz. You know, the guy that John Williams has stolen all his music from?
John Williams is no damned genius people, all his stuff is stolen from Holtz. Don't believe me? Go buy the Planets Suite by Holtz. Incredible stuff, and basically, you are listening to the Star Wars score.
Holtz or Morricone.
Or John Carpenter, hahahahahaha. Um....maybe not.

Dr Alex Patterson, Jack Dangers, or Trent Reznor depending on the flick.

But he IS alive. He's not older than 74 and is still working: he has composed several scores this year.
Morricone might be my pick, too.

I was just glancing through Morricone's IMDB roster... do you think any other composer has made more than 450 scores?

Yes! The quintessential geek, Mark Mothersbragh (sp?). He was the front man for DEVO "Whip It", "Patterns"

YES!!! He's just awesome...I love Rushmore (10/10) and The Royal Tenenbaums (10/10)...they both have such wonderful music. Bottle Rocket (7/10) is pretty wicked too.

Craig Armstrong- a genius. Especially gifted at scoring period dramas.
Brian Eno- I think "An Ascent" says it all.
Thomas Newman- although all of his work seems to be a carbon copy of his American Beauty scroe, it still sounds good.
Danny Elfman- another one that could sue himself for plagerism, but I also liked his score for To Die For- in some ways, very Elfmanesque, but then again...very modern too.
Massive Attack- so they're a group, but their music is atmosphere in a can if you ask me.

Danny Elfman - 'nuff said.
-and-
Thomas Newman - His score for "American Beauty" ALWAYS moves me to tears.
