Hey schmoes, Im glad to see this one being made.
I loved the first film made in 1984 with its elaborate and beautiful sets and great actors and special fx, but we have to admit that it did take its liberties with the story. Then came the sci-fi channel mini-series and totally satasfied every DUNE fan on the planet by being incredibly faithfull to the book and delivering a quality film that IMHO was excellent... and now were gonna see the sequel..Children of Dune!
Its gonna include both books, children of dune and Dune Messiah all in one mini-series. It looks like its almost ready to go, and I cant wait to see these characters back in action!
Im glad they kept most of the same actors from the first series, like for example Alec Newman as Paul Atreides:

And Barbara Kodetova as Chani:

I thought that the first mini series they made was excellent because it was so faithfull to the book. Acting wise it was excellent cause they got a bunch of great actors who really commited to this project. And it looks like this second one wont dissapoint either since it has the same creative team and director and a big part of the original cast is back....heres hoping that it will be just as interesting and well done as the first. It certainly looks like it, what do you guys think?

I'm sorry but I have to strongly disagree with you on that. I am a big fan of "Dune", loved the David Lynch movie, and absolutely HATED the miniseries. I couldn't sit through the painful amateurish acting, and the effects (even for a TV show budget) sucked major hog balls.
So the TV version didn't satisfy every DUNE fan on the planet by at least one person.
I'm sorry there's gona be a sequel. I'll stick with "Children of Dune" the book, thank you.

I will add that all my friends liked the TV movie, and I'm the only person I know of on this planet who didn't. :(

KC my man I am right there with you brotha!
I loved the Lynch Dune, yes it did go astray from the book at times, but the sets the acting and the Fremen kicked the SCI-FI channels DUNE's ASS! like it was an ignored red headed step child on Christmas.
I won't even get into the stupid costumes and the piss poor sets and acting.
Once was enough for me.
If they make another mini series I will avoid it like the plague.
It reminded me of a bad ABC afterschool special and Star Trek the NG had better effects.
Lynch's DUNE was lush and rich and original and the actors are Oscar calibur.
This fan was not at all happy with the SCI-FI version so now there are two of us.

Hey, woah! That's cool... I felt so lonely for the last year :P
At least there'll be the sequel for the other 99.9% of the world population who liked it, huh?
Meanwhile I'm going to order the Alan Smithee copy of "Dune", and talk about how upset I am with LOTR: FOTR for truncating the storyline and adding a new character - just kidding. FOTR kicked major ass even though they took liberties with the book!

Directors SHOULD take liberties with stories because word-for-word scripts are totally devoid of any talent. If kubrick didn't take liberties, we wouldn't have HAD alot of his films and would have had total garbage.

Im not saying that sci-fi channels Dune remake is better, Im just saying that it was a lot more faithfull to the books, and im sure a lot of fans appreciated that. I know I did! I guess Im in a minority here but I cant help it, I thought it was a decent film. With its minor flaws but decent.
Just like any other movie, It does have its glitches. Like many of you, I agree that some of the clothes they used were preatty bad. Specially with the way the Emperor of the Universe was dressed...come on! His the emperor of the universe for christ sake!
But putting some of those minor flaws aside, I enjoyed a lot of aspects from this newer version. I liked how it left almost nothing out in terms of covering the material on the book. It expanded the universe of Dune for me. A lot of little details were in there, and they obviously took carefull consideration in putting those details in there..it makes the universe of Dune all the more real.
I enjoyed the dream sequences VERy much! And I dont think that the fx were amaturish. I thought the way the the worms looked was very nicely achieved.
And I dont think that the actors were bad either... Alec Newman did a great job in bringing Paul Atreides to life, of course he had big competition, because the definitve Paul Atreides, to me anyway is the one seen in David lynch version, but all in all I think he did a really good job.
I Love David Lynchs version of Dune, its so lush and visually interesting, but it left a lot of the elements from Dune the novel out, and if you had read the books you would have probably felt cheated. I know as a movie by itself its great hey Ive seen it myself a couple of thousand times and still love it every time I see it.
They are both very different visions. But I love both of em for different reasons. Sci-fi channels for its faithfullness and Lynchs version for its visual flare and grandeur.
maybe this second time around, they will improve on these minor squabbles and make an even better representation of the planet Arakis....also known as DUNE.:D
