Well, the third installment of the Harry Potter franchise has got a director (Alfonso Cuarón). A release date (summer 2004) and the three main charecters returning to their roles.

I'm so excited about it because it has many unexpected surprises (yes.. more than the whole four books together) and it tells us more and more about the history of Harry.

The first thing I'm thinking of is: Who do you think they will\should cast for the rold of Sirius Black (The Prisoner Of Azkaban)?

Maybe it's just me, but I always pictured Sirius Black as a rugged Hugh Jackman or Colin Farrell looking guy. I mean, imagine Hugh or Colin with long black hair and a three-day Indiana Jones stubble on the chin, and they seem to fit the part pretty good. :)

I was thinking Colin Farrell. But, he's considered for everything nowadays! But really he'll be great. As for Hugh Jackman I don't know. I'm thinking someone to have some sort of "nice" look under his tough features. And Colin could be perfect for that. But isn't he young to play Sirius?

I'm thinking Christian Bale!

Christian Bale is a wonderful selection for Sirius Black. He is a very good actor and is British.

The casting that has me excited is Remus Lupin. He is one of the best characters of the books. I love his and Harry's scene doing the Expecto Patronum spell. I am hoping Ewan Mcgregor gets the part. He is a wondeful thespian and he looks like my mind's image of Lupin quite a bit. I am just scared he will be too busy with Episode III of Star Wars.

Does anyone else think the boggart scene will be extremely funny? I cannot wait to see Snape in Neville's gran's dress.

I cannot wait until PoA hits theatre. I just wish it was November 2003 instead of July 2004. I heard the WB thinks their marketing department will be busy with The Matrix films, Terminator 3, and The Return of the King(New Line is a subsidary of AOL Time Warner).

Proffesor Lupin! YES!! Ewan McGregor would really be perfect for the role. But I do think he won't do it becaise of his commitment to Episode III.
Lupin is indeed a brilliant charecter. And I'm, too, waiting for the boggart scene. and the dementors.

I have the feeling THIS would be the ultimate Harry Potter movie. But a July 2004 release is really too far.

I read awhile ago the boggart scene will not be in the movie, and that really sucks....

Spoilers Below

They have got to have the boggart sequence! Not only is it extremely funny. It develops a crucial point and gives a clue to Lupin's secret. Remember he sees the full moon when he faces the boggart. The boggart creature also helps Harry learn how to ward off dementors. So they MUST introduce boggarts and why not do it with a funny scene? I hope Alfonso Cuaron puts his foot down. I mean CoS has the cornish pixies and they are not crucial to the plot, but they are fun! They'd better put the boggart scene in! I am really mad if they don't. Sorry for the rant but I love the scene. I wonder if Alan Rickman does not want it. He'd have to cross-dress, but do it for the fans Alan. And to Steve Kloves just put it in.

P.S. Another funny scene will be at the Quidditch Cup when Harry puts the patronum spell on the "dementor" that is Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle all dressed up. I will be laughing me butt off!

SPOILERS

I am really seriously wondering how this film will stay true to wonderful novel without being a PG-13. I mean it deals with some serious and sad themes. We have to hear Harry's mum, Lily, pleading with Lord Voldemort to let Harry live and his cruel cackle at her death. There is the sound of an axe hitting wood where every non-reader will think poor Buckbeak got his head lopped off. There is Sirius Black and his whole murder thing. I mean his scene where he breaks into the Gryffindor dormitory with a blade is freaky. We have Pettigrew with a missing finger. We have dementors with scabby hands and we see one of their demonic faces. This film will be damn creepy. I wonder how Alfonso and team will pull it off.

P.S. How will they do dementors without seeming like a ringwraith ripoff?

That's a good point! Actually PoA is really sad and disturbing (for younger viewers) and it has some really shocking moments. I think Warner would manage to get a PG rating for the film and make a longer version for the DVD.

As for the dementors: well, they have to work hard on it. They should be creative and original coz they are of great importance in the books.

I just hope this new director would be up to the task. If he starts with taking the boggart scene away it MAY be a diaster. But it's too early to judge the man, I think. He's a good charected, after all..

I think the boggart scene should be kept in too. It's a crucial scene to the movie.

As for Sirius Black...I know I already said I could picture Hugh Jackman and Colin Farrel playing the part above, but I just thought of someone else: Val Kilmer. Y'know, WILLOW-style. :) I don't think he'd be the best for the part, but they could get way worse. :D

The more movies the better ,
I can only imagine how powerful those kids will be as they grow older

This is going to be PG-13 but will have no affect on the box office whatsoever. The kids parents have read the books and will most likly take the kids to see the movie. Or the Parents will see the movie first than take the kids to see it doubeling the bo.

MILD SPOILERS FOR PoA and GoF

I wonder if any an English comedic actors will get to do cameos as Ernie Prang and Stan Shunpike. I thought they were pretty funny in the film. Stan is even funnier with his GoF cameo while trying to impress the veela at the Quidditch World Cup. LOL :)

Here is a question for you all. What part of PoA are you looking forward too? I know we are all probably looking forward to the boggart scene with Alan Rickman as Snape in Neville's gran's dress. I really want to see the scenes at The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley. There is Fred and George making the Head boy badge say Bighead boy. There is the dementor on the train. There is also Prof. Trelawney's real prediction. What do you guys think?

A note about "rating" thread.....

I am going to merge this with our PoA discussion thread. It is not really news so it belongs in that thread for discussions and opinions. Thank You and I welcome you to continue this discussion there.

it has many unexpected surprises (yes.. more than the whole four books together)

Really? So Harry Potter 3 has more surprises than Harry Potter 1, 2, 3, and 4 put together? (If you think about it you will see how it doesn't make sense) You must mean 1, 2, and 4 put together. Never mind, sorry bout that...

I really want to know how they deal with not making dementors look like ringwraiths, oh, I have an idea! They could just cut out the dementors altogether, and therefore have no need for the boggart scene, (because that way they don't need to lead up to the Harry Potter training session) and at the same time make the movie a great deal shorter! I mean, dementors aren't really THAT important to the plot, are they? :p

BUMP! or maybe it would be more appropriate to say "Wingardium Leviosa!"

Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell are way too young to play Sirius Black or Professor Lupin. The actor has to be in their middle 30's to early 40s.

Here are other casting ideas:

Whatcha think?

Professor Lupin - Ralph Fiennes
Sirius Black - Robert Carlyle
Professor Trelawney - Tracey Ullman
Cedric Diggory - Jamie Bell
Peter Pettigrew - Mark Addy

I hope Carlyle is never in an HP film. I used to like him, but he is quite annoying.

I disagree with every one of your selections.

Professor Lupin- Ewan Mcgregor(I do not care about a tiny age difference, he is the best man for the job. I do not want a red dragon as Lupin)
Sirius Black- Christian Bale(He is perfect! He has a rugged and gruff look and is an amazing actor)
Professor Trelawney- Judi Dench(So she many not be pitch perfect on the looks front, but her talent could make her the perfect Trelawney. She is wonderfully eccentric and would make a great Sybll)
Cedric Diggory- Unknown(This should not be a known actor. It should be an unknown teen and Bell looks too young)
Peter Pettigrew- Gary Lewis

Jamie Bell is 16 now. He doesn't look too young to me.

I couldn't envision anyone other than Tracey Ullman for the role of Professor Trelawney. She would be really hilarious in that role. Judi Dench is too formal, too regal to be an eccentric, absent-minded loon.

I have to disagree with you there. For Trelawney I would definitley cast Rachel Weisz from The Mummy movies... Judi Dench seems too old to me...

If Judi Dench is too old, I think Rachel Weisz is TOO young. Can't anyone see how perfect Tracey Ullman would be in that role?

Sorry, this is kind of off topic, but does anyone know why Christ Colombus would not direct the 3rd Harry Potter???? I thought he did great in the first and the second should be better. He would probably get a big paycheck too. Anyone know why?

Columbus said he decided to give away the directing reigns for the third Potter film because he wants to be with his family. He said he left every day at 6:00 AM and returned home at around 11:00 PM and he was missing the time spent playing with his children and being with his wife. He will still have a huge impact on PoA. He is an on-set producer. He will be there everyday, he will just have a normal 9-5 job. He wants to be involved a lot with Potter and the child performers, he just wants to also be involved with his children and spend a normal time on the job.

Rachel Weisz is a great choice. She can be funny as much as she can be serious and creepy. But don't you think she'd be kinda too young for the role?

I agree with all of your choices, except Cedric Diggory, who I think Jamie Bell could pull off. In Billy Elliot they tried to pass him off as 11 or 12, but, he really looked much older than that. By now I imagine he is 16 or 17, and would probably handle the role quite well.
