Numbers are awfully quiet. Then again, everyone is back in school. This is a great time to be a Schmoe. The big test this coming week is the arrival of Ivan Reitman's Analyze That . I wonder which will be number one, but my bet is the top three will be shifted around. I say go Bond...I want it to gross more than XXX and also become the highest grossing Bond film. (Hey who wants to start a protest to MGM since they aren't reprinting The Living Daylights for reasons unknown? Grr...)

Those numbers do not suprise me. A big chunk of Chamber of Secrets business is children and their families. With kids back in school, you know it is going to go down to second. Die Another Day is much more adult male skewing, and they still go see films during the week.

I agree, the thanksgiving weekend is over in the U.S, and since people have to get back to their daily routine, no one is in the mood for movies, and Monday's numbers are always weak too.

If someone wants to see a film they will probably buy a ticket for the weekend when they are off, and do not need to worry about work. Why go Monday? Why not Sunday, for most folks?

I don't have this highlighted for the top spot - but for its total gross. DAD needs to just gross only $22 million dollars more to be the highest grossing Bond film in the franchise (in modern times - "Thunderball" has the highest gross once you figure in inflation) and only roughly $20 mil to recover its budget. I think Bond has a shot at a $160 mil boxoffice take or higher.
And Harry, go boy!
Well, I'm very happy to report that the wonderful little indie hit THE GOOD GIRL made it to 14 Million on Tuesday and now has a total of $14,001,538... That's my good girl ;)...

I think that if you want to truly understand B.O business, you have to be interested in the full detailed lists as well... The game of predicting B.O or analyzing current/past B.O is dependable on many different aspects and the details give you ability to form a more exact and well argumented opinion.
Most people have pretty ignorant opinions on how well a future movie will make or how well a past movie has made (for example you have to know things like production budget and marketing budget to determine whether it was a flop or a success).

You certainly don't speak for everyone. I always read Mike's list of theatre counts. He does a lot of work to keep up the box office news, and I am very grateful for that. Personally, I think you are a minority on this issue, TheMovieMinor. Reading your ignorant message made me roll my eyes.
Thanks everyone. I'm glad most of you enjoy reading my "full" list of theater counts. It may sound lame but I keep track of everything B.O. and every week I write down the full list of theater counts in a notebook as soon as they are released, and then I come here and type them all up to share with everyone else. Some may not care, but some do and I don't mind doing it for those who do. I also have a seperate notebook where I write down the daily B.O. numbers for each day and my weekend B.O. predictions. I also have a notebook where I write down the TOP VHS/DVD rentals each week and then I come here and I type those up too for the people that actually want to see them. It may sound obsessive but I just can't help it, I love movies and I like to keep track of everything. I also like to share all of this info with my fellow schmoes who are like friends, even though I don't actually know you guys face to face I still feel like I do. I love to do stuff for my friends and I love to do stuff for everyone here.

You know whats funny Mike, I do exactly the same. Its just I have in on spreadsheet on the computer. Every movies theater count, Box office opening and gross till date. Crowd Reviews, as in was it good or bad or mixed reviews from the people, the Ratings, DVD/VHS rentals (stopped it though), and also every movie that comes out on the date, all nice and organized.
So when you list the full numbers, and i put it down, I didn't know it was so precisous to everyone. I thought it was just someone like me who cared about it. So I put up just the more known ones. So sorry Mike to what I said, and to all the others who commented about it.
I'm no Minority DH, actually I am just a high as Mike is, but he posts everything, I kinda just keep it to my own knowledge and speard the news by going face to face rather than Screen to screen, but eye burning, to needed glasses, to dumbness etc. Althought I sit on this piece of crap comp. all day myself.

My guess is CoS will end up around the $280-290 million range. It's been running 10% consistently behind last year's pace. For whatever reason, WB's marketing on this movie has been strangely muted, and that might have hurt it's chances at $300m. I might note that it's international box office is actually running ahead of last year's pace, so $900m+ is certainly possible.
Now, the bad thing is that many people will claim CoS is a failure if it stop shorts of $300m. When you consider the fact that only 13 movies have ever reached $300m, Cos is doing damn well, in fact, it's the most successful kid's franchise in history.

ANALYZE THAT did half the business the first film did. ANALYZE THAT will probably make about $9-10 million when the first made over $18 million in it's opening weekend.
And, ugh, that's such a drop for HARRY POTTER, let's hope it does what it's been doin' every Saturday... which is increase significantly from it's Friday gross.

i like the #'s this week, i think it would be awesome to see bond reclaim the throne, that'd be terrific. also, where is solaris?? and go Ring! back up to #8! i love that movie!!!!
Well, the weekend after Thanksgiving is one of the slowest weekends of the year at the Box Office, and this weekends numbers certainly didn't do anything to change that trend. And I don't think that too many people actually liked the first Analyze That enough to take a trip to the theater and check this one out. I'm sure most people will just wait for video.
Here were my predictions for Lees Movie Info:
Friday - 6.5 Million
Saturday - 9.3 Million
Sunday - 6.2 Million
Total - 22 Million
Man, it couldn't even reach my low predictions...
Ack! What a huge disappointment for ANALYZE THAT. Here's my analysis. Firstly, Warner Bros. did a lousy job of promoting it. Although I found both the teaser and the full-length trailer funny, they just didn't grab you. They also should've attached the trailer to more films. There should've been more TV spots. With so many high-profile films coming out, Warner Bros. should've hyped it more (I think the studio relied too much on the original's popularity). Secondly, the movie was seriously hurt by the negative reviews. De Niro is no Mel Gibson. He can't overcome bad reviews. Thirdly, the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is typically a slower time, especially for adult-targeted movies. Adults are busy with Christmas shopping. This is one reason I sense that the movie's going to recover from its slow start and last through the holidays. Hopefully, good word-of- mouth would keep the movie in theaters long enough for adults to find the time to see it.

You don't like the numbers? Tough cookies. They were expected. It's the weekend after Thanksgiving - it's like a big bomb dropping on Iraq. (Oh oops wrong forum, I thought I was talking politics for a second!) Analyze That doesn't look that appealing - the trailer makes it appear unfunny. (In all fairness the original is awesome.) Lack of marketing can also be blamed this time around. Word of mouth is keeping "that loser Bond" on top, so if you don't like it live with it. Why don't you explain to all of us here why Bond is such a worthless pile of dreck? I'm up for hearing it. No, you know what? I'm taking this fight off the forums. PM me and we'll talk. :) I'm a waitin' - after all that unoriginal second pony Potter can't last much longer. (Now do you wanna talk?)
Sorry to everyone else - but I'm sick of this Bond bashing. If you can't respect other people's thoughts on movies (mine on Bond, anyone else's on Potter) then just keep your thoughts to yourself and don't drag this out. And for the record I think Potter is going to lose some ground throughout the weekend.

Quite frankly, I'm sick of both the Potter and Bond bashing. They are both hits, deal with it people. I myself prefer Potter (although I haven't seen the new Potter yet or the new Bond), but it doesn't bother me that Bond is a hit. I'm just hoping Potter makes it to 300 Million, and I don't care what anyone says, I think it will. It's going to play well through the Christmas holiday. And even if it only ends up with 285 Million or so, it's still a big hit.

I hated the Bond movie and wish it would just drop like a rock. Analyze That is a much more entertaining film IMHO.

I'm sure some did but I doubt it was many. Anyway, you and your brother still did a very nice job with your predictions.
I originally had predictions that totalled 26 million, but yesterday, while me and my friends were waiting to sneak into THE HOT CHICK (we had already seen THEY and the end of HARRY POTTER) we had an extra 15 minutes to kill so we wouldn't get caught. We ended up in the ending of a showing of ANALYZE THAT and the theater was maybe 1/6 full so I went home and lowered my predictions, but I guess I didn't lower them enough...

I haven't a single problem with Harry Potter - like other film critics out there, the genre that HP falls in is not one I can watch very often. (The Lord of The Rings is a different story since I became engrossed in the book ages ago.) I just wish we could all get along and not squabble about which series is better. I'm rooting for Bond because 007 hasn't a solid hit in way over 30 years (with adjusted inflation might I add). Potter will gross 300 mil, I should hope, since it is a very lucrative franchise.

I don't disrespect Bond fans, I just disrespect the film itself, and I will PM you why.
This is from Box Office Mojo:
1. Die Another Day (MGM/UA) / 4.1 / 111.4 / 15
Weekend Pace: $13.7 million / $121 million
James Bond reclaimed the top spot more by default than anything else as it tumbled around 55%, an average drop for a movie like this following Thanksgiving. By comparison, 'The World is Not Enough' fell 54% in the same frame, while 'Goldeneye' was off 51%. Next weekend, 'Die Another Day' will become the highest Bond picture yet (although it will rank #10 in terms of tickets sold).
2. Analyze That (Warner Bros.) / 3.8 / 3.8 / 1
Weekend Pace: $12.5 million
The 'Analyze This' follow-up didn't receive the "Hail the Conquering Hero" fanfare that a major sequel usually gets leading up to release. That's in part because it was a sequel that nobody asked for. The marketing campaign relied predominantly on people's remembrance of the original rather than giving people a compelling reason to see the sequel -- exemplified by
the teaser trailer of Robert DeNiro crying in session with Billy Crystal. Without the novelty of that first oddball pairing of DeNiro and Crystal and DeNiro's spoofing of his own tough guy persona, the sequel suffered.
'Analyze This' was one of the big hits of spring 1999, opening to $18.4 million and closing with $106.8 million. Comedy sequels are a notoriously tough sell -- especially if they appeal predominantly adults -- as Crystal experienced in the past with 'City Slickers II' (which mustered just 35% of what its predecessor made). 'Analyze That's tagline "Back in Therapy
Dec. 6" even bared striking resemblance to the subtitle of another December comedy sequel clunker 'Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.'
As 'Analyze That' demonstrates, the post-Thanksgiving slot is an
infamously difficult time to open a picture, so much so that the studios sometimes skip it altogether. Last year, 'Behind Enemy Lines' broke the trend with its $18.7 million bow, but it had a strong marketing and was the first war picture to capitalize on the nation's heightened patriotism at the time.
Warner Bros. may have been trying to mimic the success it had last year on the first weekend of December with 'Ocean's Eleven' ($38.1 million opening, $183.4 million finish) but similar date aside, that frame happened to be two weeks after Thanksgiving and hence in far more prime release date real estate.
3. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Warner Bros.) / 2.7 / 206.6/ 22
Weekend Pace: $11 million / $215 million
Harry's second year at Hogwarts is turning out to be briefer than his first. 'Chamber of Secrets' is on track to fall around 65% this weekend. By comparison, 'Sorcerer's Stone' fell 59% in the post-Thanksgiving frame (its third weekend), and had climbed to $239.7 million by its fourth weekend en route to $317.6 million. 'Chamber of Secrets' isn't terribly far behind and could wind up with around $270 million by the end of its run. That
would equal about 85% retention of its predecessor's business -- a pretty impressive feat given that kid sequels usually fare worse.
4. Empire (Universal/Arenas) / 2.2 / 2.2 / 1
Weekend Pace: $6 million
Universal-based, Latin audience-targeted Arenas Entertainment scored a solid grosses for its first acquisition, this crime drama starring starring John Leguizamo and Denise Richards that was shot two years ago. Playing at 864 theaters, the movie was highly targeted towards urban audiences with an energetic ad campaign that clearly laid out its culture clash crime plot.
5. Eight Crazy Nights (Sony) / 1.5 / 16.7 / 10
Weekend Pace: $4.9 million / $20.1 million
6. The Santa Clause 2 (Disney) / 1.31 / 116.1 / 36
Weekend Pace: $5.4 million / $120.2 million
7. Treasure Planet (Disney) / 1.30 / 19.4 / 10
Weekend Pace: $5.1 million / $23.2 million
Though this awkward grafting of 'Treasure Island' on to a sci-fi space setting is one of the biggest bombs in Disney's history, its drop of around 60% is common for a family movie on the weekend after Thanksgiving.
8. The Ring (DreamWorks) / 0.84 / 121.6 / 50
Weekend Pace: $2.6 million / $123.4 million
9. They (Miramax/Dimension) / 0.82 / 9.3 / 10
Weekend Pace: $2.5 million / $11.0 million
10. Friday After Next (New Line) / 0.80 / 27.1 / 15
Weekend Pace: $2.8 million / $29.1 million

It was a crappy weekend, but next weekend will most likely be better, because the films won't have big dropoffs. There are also new releases to give the box-office a boost as well. It doesn't matter anyway, because this year's box-office is still well ahead of last years.

Here is what the expert at Box Office Guru had to say......
THIS WEEKEND The game of 'Who wants to be number one?' continued this week as Die Another Day reclaimed the top spot at the box office while Analyze This had a disappointing second place finish and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets settled for third.
James Bond bounced back to number one this weekend as Die Another Day dropped a reasonable 58% picking up an estimated $13M. Its cume now stands at $120.4M. By the end of next weekend it should pass 1999's The World is Not Enough to become the highest grossing film in the Bond series. Since Pierce Brosnan took over the role of 007, each film has made increasingly more money. Some of that can be attributed to higher ticket costs but it also goes to show the durability of the franchise and the popularity of Brosnan as the world famous spy.
Landing in second place was the Warner Bros. comedy Analyze That starring Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal. Analyze That stole $11.3M according to estimates, giving it a so-so per screen average of $4,288. Those that saw the movie also felt so-so about it as CinemaScore.com viewers gave it a B grade. A sequel to the surprise 1999 hit Analyze This, the question coming into the weekend was whether or not Analyze That was a necessary sequel. Looking back to its release in March of 1999, Analyze This didn't have a lot of competition in the marketplace with films such as The Rage: Carrie 2, Cruel Intentions, Baby Geniuses and Forces of Nature being its main competitors. This time around De Niro and company had to face powerhouses Bond and Potter as well as the usual post-Thanksgiving lull and just didn't have the juice to breakthrough to audiences. A final gross in the $40-50M range seems likely.
Flying in on broomsticks and tumbling into third place was another Warner Bros. release, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets which took in an estimated $10M this weekend. Falling nearly 69% from last weekend's three-day totals, the biggest drop in the top ten, Chamber of Secrets is depreciating much quicker than its predecessor and it would be a struggle to reach the $300M mark. Its total now stands at $213.9M, so a final cume in the $250-275 range seems more likely, still impressive for any film, especially a sequel to a hit film that only came out a year ago.
Opening strongly in fourth place this weekend was the Universal distributed Empire, starring John Leguizamo. Bringing in an estimated $6.3M from only 867 screens, its per screen average of $7,235 was tops in the top ten. Universal focused its promotion on urban markets and scored pretty well as a reported 51% of audiences were Hispanic. Viewers from CinemaScore.com gave the film a disppointing C+ average grade, but men under 21 gave the film an A rating.
The films coming in at number five, six and seven this weekend are all within half a million of each other so their rankings could change when the final numbers come out tomorrow. For now, in fifth place with $5.6M, according to estimates, is the Disney bomb, Treasure Planet. Falling 53% from last weekend, Planet's cume now stands at a paltry $23.8M. In sixth place was another Disney release, The Santa Clause 2 with an estimated $5.4M, bringing its cume to a strong $120.2M. And in seventh place was Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights which dropped 45% from last weekend, the best hold in the top ten, to an estimated $5.2M. Its total now stands at $20.4M.
The rest of the top ten looked like this: At number eight was the Ice Cube vehicle Friday After Next which took in an estimated $2.8M bringing its cume to $29.1; in ninth fellow rapper Eminem's debut film 8 Mile brought in an estimated $2.6M bringing its cume to $111.2M; and in tenth place another member of the $100M club, DreamWorks horror/thriller The Ring which scared up another $2.5M, according to estimates, bringing its cume to $123.3M
Falling out of the top ten after one week were a pair of films: They which took in an estimated $2.5M for a cume of $11M and Solaris which fell almost 66% to an estimated $2.3M bringing its total to a not-so-out-of-this-world $13.2M. A disappointing final gross in the $20M range is likely to result. And in limited release the Sony Oscar contender Adaptation opened on 7 screens to $400,000, according to estimates, for a powerful per screen average of $57,143.
Since the only copy of my projections for this weekend currently are on my hard drive, I can unequivocally say that I was dead-on with all of them. Actually, Analyze That came in at a little more than half of what I projected while Empire more than doubled my prediction.
Harry Potter should level out a bit next weekend.

It did about $528K in 300+ theaters for a per theater average of about $1700 or so. Not really *that* great.

That's IT!! I'm getting a job at Dimension Films advertising. Stuupid Bastards.
It's a little early to seal ANALYZE THAT's box-office fate. The second weekend is the key. If it only suffers a small drop, it should hold on to its screens and recover nicely through the holidays. It has little or no direct competition up until CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (Dec. 25). MAID IN MANHATTAN and TWO WEEKS NOTICE are chick flicks, THE HOT CHICK is a stupid teen flick, STAR TREK is for sci-fi buffs, GANGS OF NEW YORK is drama, and the other adult movies will open in limited release and won't go wide until next year. ANALYZE THIS opened three years ago to $18 million, not a blockbuster opening by any stretch. But it went on to make $107 million despite playing in the slow months of March and April. There are two blockbuster weekends ahead, Christmas and New Year's. Even with a not-so-impressive Cinemascore rating of B, ANALYZE THAT, if it's still around with its screens intact during those two weekends, should perform nicely. But this is all wishful thinking, of course. I'm so done with predicting box-office grosses.
