I've noticed movie fans are more likely to prefer the writings of H.P. Lovecraft over Edgar Allan Poe. This strikes me as particularly curious since, while there have been good movie adaptations of Poe's work which might draw readers to the stories, nearly nothing adapated from Lovecraft's work is terribly representative of the work itself. That's not to say there haven't been Lovecraft adaptations that weren't good in their own right (Stuart Gordon's movies come to mind); neither is that to say Lovecraft fans are not Poe fans. Just an observation. Any ideas?

Poe is a much better writer. For one thing, he basically invented the detective story genre all by himself. He's also a poet. Lovecraft was good at what he did, but much more limited in his outlook and output than Poe.

I prefer Lovecraft, but still like both. I agree though that there have been better movie adaptations of Poe's work.

Poe is great if you like mystery. If you're looking for tales of unspeakable horror that involve the strangest creatures and people, then you'd want Lovecraft. Lovecraft features a variety of monsters in his book, some earth-born, others extraterrestrial.

So, what I'm getting is that Lovecraft is not more popular than Poe . Well, so much for my astounding powers of observation.
