A new production company called Walden Media plans to make C.S. Lewis' beloved 7 book series into films. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will be adapted by Ann Peacock and directed by Andrew Adamson (Shrek). Read the press release at www.walden.com. This is very exciting because I love the books. They are very good--almost as good as LOTR and Lewis and Tolkien were good friends, btw. I can't wait.

Wow I hope they do the books justice, or else it could turn out ugly. I loved the books, and hope to see some great films come out of them!

Sounds good to me! As long as they don't take a great series and cast people whose names rhyme with Zemma Rotson and Manyel Badcliffe so that the entire production can die, and then take the world by storm with talentless losers becoming world fam...but...I'm getting ahead of my self. It...uh...it sounds...great.

Personally, I think DANIEL RADCLIFFE and EMMA WATSON are both great performers!
As for the topic, I do not care. I did not like the books, and I refuse to see the films. I wonder if they'll find a way to include the worst actress of all-time. Her name rhymes with Bicole Vidman.
Annie Hall
12-06-2002, 09:59 PM
See, I'm a fan of Bicole ;)
Emma and Daniel have improved since the first movie, but I really feel as though there are many, many more talented young actors out there. They're not the worst....but I would truly hate to see them as Lucy, Peter, Edmond or Susan.
Also, the first few Narnia books were incredible, but the ending has WAY too many religious overtones and is blatant and stupid. Magicians Nephew and Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe are two great books, though.

Well they have seven great ideas for teaser poster art. I'd go for the third from the top.
These films MIGHT be okay, if there is a talented cast and crew behind it. Yes the director is good. Shrek was an enjoyable romp. Now the writer, Ann Peacock(She must've been teased in elementary schoolf for that last name), I am not so sure about. I looked her up on IMDB and her filmography, so far, consists of two teleplays, one kinda well known, the other is not. She'll need to change the structure of the novels quite a bit, to make them good. This film really needs a great production design team. I mean a great cinematographer, and set builders. Maybe WETA could get involved? Plus the cast would need to be good, and I mean GOOD. No totally unknown cast, this needs a cast that has experience and talent. The film will get a lot of news coverage. Seven films all greenlighted. Harry Potter has seven, but is not expected to go that far. I might see this one, if it looks superb.
P.S. The best book was The Silver Chair. 8/10. The rest were 6/10's in my book. My comments were harsh, and these might be damn good. :) I will follow them closely.
Here is the film's official site: http://www.narnia.com/movie/index.htm

The Silver Chair! I'd forgotten that book. I found the best to be Magician's Nephew, LTWATW and The Silver Chair. As far as the Posters go, easily the 2nd 6th. Hoooow cool! The last one is sort of trite and cliche...sorta like the book...again...ugh.
There are a lot of actors that would be wonderful in the main roles, I think Nicole Kidman or Cate Blanchett would be wonderful in the lead female role in Magician's Nephew (the name is escaping me).

Does anyone remember the British series they did of this....lol! They came on disney and later on BBC.....hmm. i remember i found them tolerable when i was a kid. but...hopefully they will be better than those. well the first wasn't too bad, but they combined stories and cut stuff out i.e. "Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" woo.....lol....yeah the first one was okay the rest...weren't too good...the television series that is....

Bad cinematography, bad acting, bad script...had the feel of that TV show I caught on TV in Edinburgh this summer "Young Brits".

I love the Chronicles of Narnia novels!
As a child I read the novels over and over again. C.S.Lewis's style of writing is positively brilliant, the stories are pure and utter magic.
I'm a big J.K Rowling/Harry Potter fan, but C.S.Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia are even better fantasy novels than the tales of the boy wizard.
I cannot wait for the movie versions! :)

I have to agree about that. Narnia is far superior to Potter, and I also agree that none of the actors form the Potter films should have roles in the CON movies, especially lead roles. It's not so much that they are bad, its just that you don't want actors from such a similar series. I think everyone in LOTR was excellent but I wouldn't want any of them to be in CON because they are already in a huge fantasy trilogy. While on that subject, I was trying to think of actors that would be good in the roles like the four Pevensies and the White Witch. I couldn't really think of many known actors that would work. The only thing I can think of is Gilmore Girls' Alexis Bledel for Lucy if she can do a good British accent. Anybody got any ideas?

I think Jamie Bell would be decent as the older brother, and the lad from About a Boy would be quite good as Edmund. As for the girls...wasn't Lucy supposed to be younger? I can't think of any child actresses that I would cast as Lucy or Susan...
My first choice for the White Witch would be Cate Blanchett, but I doubt she would do it...due to its great similarities with Galadrial. Kristin Scott Thomas could maaaaaybe pull it off...but....eh.
dh1989
12-08-2002, 04:23 PM
Blanchett would never do it because of the similarities with Galadriel, already noted. I nominate Michelle Pfeiffer. She is a very talented actress.

Well there hasn't been much news about this but I just went to the Walden website and there is some great news (IMO). Grant Major, Richard Taylor, and John Howe are all involved as Producer/Production Designer, Special Effects, and Conceptual Artist respectively. In case you don't know, these three guys did the same jobs for the LOTR trilogy, and so we can count on at least very good Art Direction and Special Effects. Hopefully the writing, acting, directing, and cinematography will be good too.

I've only actually read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, but if the movie was done well (like Harry Potter or the upcoming Peter Pan), then I'ld be there opeing night. I liked it and I think it they got a very good visual + storyteling director then these books would really fly as movies. Maybe someone with a theatre background looking to break into film.

They have already chosen a director, Andrew Adamson. He's the guy who directed Shrek. The screenwriter is some lady named Ann Peacock. She apparently wrote the screenplay for the film based on the novel A Lesson Before Dying.

The latest news is that Walden has teamed up with Disney on this. I have mixed feelings. It does increase the budget possibilites, but Disney is notorious for changing classic stories. I'm hoping that LOTR has not only shown them that fantasy can make money, but that they shouldn't (and don't need to) tamper with the story heavily or water down the religious themes.

I knew they'd do this after Lord of the Rings. Tolken and Lewis were good friends and helped each other writing these books. The writing style is quite similar although Lewis' is more for children. They are good books but the BBC drama filmed back in the 90s (or was it 80s) is good enough. It will be interesting to see how they do these movies though.

Well the buzz is heating up on this movie. There is another thread that was started to show the new banners that have been revealed. They look amazing. Things are looking good. Here's the latest info:
Full title: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
They're doing the same "colon-ized" titles as LOTR did. In this case I think it's even more important because if there are any sequels, they would be difficult to tie them together if they were just called The Horse and His Boy and Prince Caspian without "The Chronicles of Narnia" tacked on to the front.
Release Date: December 2005
Director: Andrew Adamson (Shrek, Shrek 2)
Starring:
Tilda Swinton (The Deep End, The Beach) as the White Witch
James McAvoy (Children of Dune) as Tumnus the Faun
Rupert Everett as the voice of the Fox
James Cosmo possibly as The Professor
The names of the children have not been released. They are said to be unknowns and British. Good news on both counts IMO.
Shooting Locations: 5 months in New Zealand, 1 month in the Czeck Republic.
The more I hear about this movie, the more excited I get. It is definetely my most anticipated film of 2005.:D

I feel bad for this guy , the shadow that PJ has cast over New Zealand is going to be hard to overcome , but it looks like a number of the people that did the fx for LOTR are working on this film , so there should be some magic there , it just looks a bit too kiddish for my tastes , somewhat akin to an update of the Neverending Story , with a heavy Harry Potter influence .
Hey , Francesco Dellamorte is doing the voice for one of the characters , have to check it out for that alone , but i'm not too excited about this film .

I for one am realy looking foward to these films. With Sin City and Star Wars III : Revenge of the Sith, these are by far the movies to be excited for next year. I think they should stay in Chronical order in the sequals (doing a Horse and his boy before PRince Caspian) for 2 reasons. #1 easy of following the story line and #2 young actors ages. (see Harry Potter movies) However I'm currently reading the books again and only finished the Magician's Nephew and 1/2 way into the LW&W so I'll see what I think after I read Horse and his Boy and Price Caspian again. (I read these around 20 years ago as a young boy, So its like the first time now.

A couple of things gathered from set reports at NarniaWeb.com and TORn:
1. In a deviation from the book, Edmund will be imprisoned in a really cool sounding "ice-dungeon" in the White Witch's house and will have to be rescued by the others.
2. The chase that takes place as the winter finally begins to thaw will be more intense as the Pevensies will actually be chased across the thawing ice by wolves as ice and snow threaten to fall from a cliff above them and the ice breaks up below them--sounds kool.:D
3. The Wardrobe has a tree carved on the front, obviously a nod to the Narnian fruit tree that bore the apple that Digory Kirke planted in his backyard at the end of The Magician's Nephew.

Greg Nicotero and company are doing the special makeup fx , and Sony Imageworks ( Starship Troopers ) is involved with the cgi visual fx , now i'm looking foward to this thing . I'm not sure if GN will be personally working on this film ( he's doing Land of the Dead now ) , but it inspires confidence that his co owned ? makeup fx shop , KNB , is involved . I still feel their work on Army of Darkness are some of the best prostethic / animatronic creations ever created . And Sony Imageworks is one of the best visual fx houses around , they really tore it up on Starship Troopers , the aforementioned G 98 , Spiderman 1 / 2 , and the final two Matrix films .

That is the teaser , the behind the scenes footage that studios are starting to release , ala King Kong , and now Narnia is something new , a " pre " advertisement of their upcoming films , it's just packaged in a different way .
Studios used to be so paranoid about anyone seeing a film in production for fear someone would steal ideas ( and various other reasons ) , but PJ and Weta are so confident in the product they are creating , they are willing to show certain aspects of the production as they happen , not after the DVD is released . And they just happen to enjoy getting the fans involved as much as possible without having to take out restraining orders .
So , once again , this is the teaser , presented in a way most people aren't accustomed to , but i feel it will be something that becomes commonplace , much like the first ten minute preview Dawn 04 made popular .

Yeah that's what I was talking about. It's about 8 or 9 feet tall and all 3D with the opened Wardrobe door and the trees and lamppost sticking out of the background where you can see the White Witch's house in the distance. Also they actually have a little light behind the lamppost so it looks like it's lighting up the wintry forest, and Lucy is peering around it. It's been up for about six weeks at the AMC here in Oklahoma City.

I think this thing is shaping up nicely , it should be a huge hit , i always loved fantasy films , and nobody knows how to do them better than those guys and gals at Weta . But they will have other fx specialists working on this also , and KNB is on board for some of the fx , i like what i see so far , this should be something special . I still feel it will be somewhat kiddish , but that's not a knock , and how bad can it be , Francesco Dellamorte himself will be the voice of one of the characters , now it's a must i see this . Maybe Gnagi can make a cameo :) .

Def. not cutesy - have you seen the WETA footage? I think someone posted the link somewhere in the thread. The creatures look pretty cool and the actors are even using real weapons which will add a whole reality level to the film.
p.s. I found the Cave pics - they had them on Narnia Web.

That's good that's it not , at least not entirely , because they won't want too get too dark or else they will scare off the little guys and depress the parents .
I didnt see the the Weta footage , i'm making it a habit now to chillout with the spoilers for films i have an interest in seeing . I went into FOTR just about as ignorant as can be and it was a great experience . I didn't really know what anything looked like going in , and it was so much better for it , that sense of wonderment and discovery . I regret spoiling the last two in the trilogy because i went on a spoiler fest , this Narnia film looks like something special so i'll take everyone's word for it , the books are cool , and the images floating around so far are great .

That's cool you are avoiding spoilers, but I'm not sure that watching the WETA footage will show you anything new- especially if you are familiar with the books. It just gives you the idea of where they are going with this- get to see the costume design, etc. It just made me more ecited to see the movie.

Never read the books , so i won't need to make comparisons or even be tempted too . My brother told me he saw the bts footage and he thinks it looks better than LOTR , so i'll take his word for and go in as fresh as possible .

you've never read the books.....they are sooooo good....great as a kid and great as an adult.
that said, your brother is spot on - the style does look better than LOTR - its very majestic looking (from my take of the WETA thing). I know you don't want to see it, but I wouldn't worry about it being any more of a spoiler than a trailer would be....thats just my take though

Yeah, I hate it in films when they have to use pretend weapons. It just kills the drama.
Guy 1 (holdin up hand in a gun shape): I shot you first.
Guy 2 (holding up his arm): I know, but it hit my pretend shield. Ha ha. Take that!
Guy 1: [chopped with a pretend axe] KHAAAAAAN!!!

Majestic - that is a great word to describe it. Just found out that Tilda swinton who is playing the white witch is in Constantine which comes out this weekend. Might go see it to get a taste of what I can expect from her.

The official site is up: www.narnia.com
With a new behind the scenes video (doesn't work right now) and some great production art and wallpapers
Aintitcoolnews.com (www.aintitcoolnews.com) has got the first glimpse of the trailer if you head on over there. It was filmed by someone who took a video camera into a special screening of some kind, but it's pretty clear.
I must say, the trailer was good. Quite what the film will be like is another thing entirely.

I really really liked the trailer. They are obviously trying to ride on the tide of LOTR and Harry Potter, but it also seems to me that the movie will have it's own unique voice.
I haven't read the books, but the trailer really pumped me up for the film. Looks damn good.

Yes, the trailer is, at least what can be gathered from the AICN "screen cap", quite captivating. It is strange to have someone recording it, though. This is, of course, not related to the film itself, just a mere observation.

Wow, just noticed I started this thread 2 and a half years ago.
Well you can now see the freaking awesome trailer on moviefone in high-res quicktime.
The trailer looks great. It really looks like they shot it well and it doesn't have that artificial look that the Harry Potter movies have. As soon as they went through the wardrobe and that music kicked in I was in awe. They've really got me excited for this one even more. I loved the shot of them on that bridge of rock covered in snow and also the shot of the castle (Cair Paravel?) with the mermaids. And the Stone Table scene looks great too.
Still no word on who will replace Brian Cox as the voice of Aslan. He dropped out last month for some reason.

The Harry potter series is a different kind of fanstasy IMO. But I agree some of the scenes were beautiful! Did you see the beavers on the bridge scene? You can see them b/cthey are smaller than the children. I can't stop watching this. I keep going back to see if there is anything I missed.

Oh no , i can feel another obsession coming on , ala LOTR for almost 4 years , my friends , co workers , and family are going to be hating life again with my incessant rambling about this new series . Ah who am i kidding , i annoy them anyway , but i'll be annoying on steroids when i get hyped up for this bad boy . Who cares if it's a bit for the younger set , fantasy films never get old , and this looks like a great one .

To everyone who hasn't read these books, I highly suggest you do. I'm re-reading them now after about 10 years, and I am getting pumped up for the movie. They are a very easy read. I just knocked out 150+ pages of The Magician's Nephew in about 2 hours last night.
By the way, these books are so much easier to understand being 20 instead of 10.

I saw this trailer before Revenge of the Sith as well. There wasn't much reaction. In fact, I heard some "what is that?" mumbling.
Anyway, I thought the trailer was astounding! I knew exactually what the trailer was from the very first frame with the four children. Once it was over, I kept thinking about all of the images in reference to scenes in the book. I actually forgot what movie I had come to see until the Lucasfilm logo came up.
I own the Narnia books but I haven't read them in years. Does anyone remember the 1979 animated version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe? I own this and love it.

I saw the trailer last night before Sith and that animated movie was all I could think about. The animated one really creeped me out, but i love the story.
I think this movie looks absolutly awesome. My sister saw Sith opening weekend and she said the theatre went nuts after it ended (cheers and applauding). The trailer was amazing on the big screen as oppose to my computer screen and left me with goosebumps. I need to read the book again after I'm done with Goblet of Fire :)

I just read on Narnia Web that the movie is only going to be 2 hours and 10 minutes. Seems a little short for such a big story. I know it's shorter than any of the three LOTR books but they were drastically cut down, so a 2:40 or 3:00 runtime seems like it would be perfect for TLTWATW but who knows. I'm reserving judgement until I see it.
I guess this is good news though considering there were rumors it would be only 1:50.
Another thing to discuss: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will be rated PG.

Imogen Heap is writing a song for the soundtrack that'll play in the end credits. This just shot up my excitement for the movie quite a bit (though I was already interested)...She's the perfect choice for a movie like this and I'm glad they thought of her. Now, if only we'd see her in the Oscars as well...

This movie does look quite good, although I don't think it will be as good as Harry Potter was or King Kong will be. However, I like the book so I'll be there opening weekend. Here's hoping the teaser trailer for POTC2 appears on it as well, cos the version circulating online has a crap picture.

They have the 9min trailer out in Quicktime now (and RealPlayer or whatever as well)

They also have 6 movie clips out (aside from the battle clip that was released a few weeks ago). I dont think the last one is much of a clip really though (hide and seek... its mostly just the trailer bits)
Anyway, those are here in windows media player only:
