In my opinion (and probably everyone else on the site) Se7en (10/10) is hands down the best detective story ever told on film. YES< I SAID EVER!!! More than Silence of the Lambs and other wannabes, this is just an all-around slick film. Fincher's very best.

The Usual Suspects (10/10) is the mother of all detective stories.

Seven was the most brilliant, until Memento came along.

The Usual Suspects. It's got action, it's got mystery, it's got Kevin Spacey!

I'd say it's pretty easily between the Maltese Falcon and Chinatown.

The Usual Suspects, of course.

And 8 Women was really good, as far as THIS year goes...

When I think detective I think Sam Spade, not police detective, so movies like Se7en are not included, the best of the many great detective films IMO is Roman Polanski's Chinatown.

QUENTIN's right, actually, and his choice is by far the best, as far as PURE detective films go.

Take a look at that writing underneath my avatar. Or if you don't feel like it, L.A. Confidential.

I'm with Quentin. I also think Sam Spade was the epitemy of a detective.

My picks:

THE MALTESE FALCON

L.A CONFIDENTIAL

Haven't yet seen Chinatown.

I've scene Bogart as Philip Marlowe in the Big Sleep which I think is a superior movie to Maltese Falcon, but with a very complicated, confusing plot.

I would like to see Robert Mitchum's portrayal of Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep and Farwell my Lovely, where gives very gripping perfomances as the famed PI

It's a tie between...and I can't believe nobody's talked about this first one yet...

And schmoes, The Usual Suspects (10/10) was mostly centered around the 5 criminals and one of the surviving criminal's story. So folks, it kinda counts as a crime film more than a detective one.

I don't doubt that it is a crime movie more than detective movie, but, I still think that it is both. Chazz played an important role in this one, and a good portion of the movie was the detective trying to work things out, even if it was just discussing the crime.

Besides...it's bloody brilliant

Ditto, but I would go with John Huston's The Maltese Falcoln instead. I'm literally going with Sam Spade.
