I thought I'd acknowledge one of Japan's greatest directors. Kaneko is probably known best for his sci-fi, horror films. Brian Yuzna gave Kaneko an opportunity to direct in the horror biz with Necronomicon(1994). Part 3 of the film was directed by Kankeo. He first got recognition for Gamera, Guardian of the Universe in 1995, followed by Gamera 2: Advent of Legion in '96. He concluded the giant turtle epics with Gamera 3: Awakening of Iris. His next film that pleased horror fans was Crossfire, which involved a girl with pyrokinetic powers. After that came one of his biggest projects, which had people talking all over: Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. I recommend his films to anyone who's in the mood for serious kaiju cinema, or for just a good time.

A mighty BUMP for this fine director. I just saw GMK last night, and was blown away. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus was a fun comic book flick, but it was about time for someone to take the Big G back to his sinister roots. This is one ballsy film. It's actually unnerving in parts (the succinct "hospital" sequence got to me). I haven't seen Gojira this pissed off in quite some time! The cinematography is immaculate, the miniatures are eerily convincing, and the subtle humor was much appreciated. Baragon might've been too cute, though. I wanted to snuggle with him, which disrupted the caliginous mood. The characters are likeable, although the script succumbs to semantics (I detected traces of Armageddon toward the end).
In summation, Kaneko kicks ass. I still have two Gamera romps to knock out, but I'll be watching them shortly.

I wasn't all too impressed with his work in an otherwise decent collection with Necronomicon, but Gamera: Guardian of the Universe and GMK has changed my mind of him whole heartedly.
He has created some of the best kaiju out there, and I hope he will continue to make other movies too.

I thought I'd mention that Kaneko will helm the sequel to Azumi, which was directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. I haven't seen it, but from what I've heard it's a great action film. And based on Kaneko's work, I'm sure he'll do well with the sequel.
