Which film did you choose?
Mine is a close one, Equilibrium is a bit better than my other fav, that no one else likes, The Transporter.

While Equilibrium was great, the Matrix Edges it out a bit...

I have only seen The Matrix (9/10) on that list, so it's a tie with Blade II (8/10) for the action scenes, but I'd say The Matrix had a waaaaaay cooler storyline (i know everyone will agree with me about that, why did I even say it?).

I officially HATE Entertainment Weekly - having given it a D+. When I become a famous and POWERFUL director, I'm going to line up the Entertainment Weekly staff and blow their brains out.
(The Bourne Identity, Die Another Day, and The Transporter were quite dope too, but no where NEAR as good as "Equi".)

The Matrix started a new demension in action, making outragous and unreal situations belevable bacause of the nature of the plot...
Though i have to say we are fortunate to have a kick ass James Bond generation, Brosnan is my second favorite and the stories are better than ever...

The Matrix created a new type of fighting sequence. Plus, it was better than THE TRANSPORTER, and I haven't seen anything else on that list.

Sorry for the bum list. I forgot by other ones. But um, your right movie guy about EW. They seem to give bad reviews to all the good flicks now a days.

The Matrix wins easily for me.

Easy, The answer is the MATRIX.
The Matrix is the greatest action movie of all time. End of discussion. You'd have to go back at least a decade or more and go with Die Hard 1, or Aliens 2, or Indiana Jones II(although overall the first movie was much better) to find any movie with action sequences that could come close to challenging the Matrix.
The brothers took ideas hinted at by Hong Kong cinema directors, and anime and nearly perfected them, creating an entire backlot of would be copy cats. (Equilibrium for example)
Just wait till the next one comes out. All doubt will be erased as far as who reigns supreme in fx. Believe that!

While Equilibrium had some very cool fight sequences, The Matrix created a new world of awesome fights. It was innovative, intense, and fun. My jaw always drop when Neo and friends start kicking ass.

I love them all, except Equilibrium (haven't seen it), but I chose The Matrix. Reasons have already been stated...

Being one that favors R rated action flicks, i chose THE MATRIX (haven't seen EQUALIBRIUM, but i see some schmoes here dig it).

You people haven't even SEEN Equilibrium yet!!!... FUCK The Matrix.
There is an action scene in "Equi" that is similar to The Matrix, but is played out WAY BETTER!
NOT REALLY A SPOILER, BUT SPOILER WARNING ANYWAY!!!!******
Two men have a close together gun dual, similar to The Matrix (between Neo and Smith). The difference?... In "Equi", it's played for SPEED. It is VERY QUICK, and VERY EXCITING. Sure, The Matrix had a cool slo-mo bullet-time to go with that scene, but it DULLED the action! That scene was about a special effect! In "Equi", it's fucking... it's just... it's... Well, you'll just have to see it.
END OF WANNABE SPOILER!!!!!!!*********

I haven't seen any reviews of yours for Equilibrium yet... Are you "by far"ing before you've even seen it? You may be surprised...
And aren't you one of the Schmoes who hates Keanu? Well, "Equi"'s Keanu-free... ;)

You want a review? Equilibrium is trite and clichéd...hell even talking about his movie is a cliché because it makes almost all the mistakes that its predecessors make. Overworked plot (am I the ONLY one who read Brave New World?), extremely derivative, hell even it's own studio didn't have the faith to give it a theatrical release. It does have Christian Bale who I like, but I don't hate Keanu, I just don't particularly like him either. But if a movie like the Matrix can make a lot of people like Keanu who didn't before, on top of this movie being very original in it's execution and fusing of genres (how many imitations have we seen, and how many scenes in movies homaging it?), how dare you compare the two? They're not even in the same league.

The Matrix is a rip-off of elements from Neuromancer (a book by William Gibson, the "inventor" of the word "cyberspace"), Dark City, The Crow (as far as shots go), Ghost in the Shell, and Total Recall, just off the top of my head. The Wachowski's called them homages and such. I call it ripping-off. The only thing completely original was it's visual effects, and how can that "wow" people anymore? It's been copied to death.
Equilibrium's action was not a copy off The Matrix. The story is heavily ripped-off, but the action is different and, IMO, WAY BETTER.

Exact quote from the book Neuromancer:
"I'm jacking-in to the Matrix."
And, yes, it is essentially the same idea, that "the Matrix" (in the book) is a cyber-world. It too has this one person that can save the planet, with the help of a lady friend, and a few others. It too has a tough-ass cyber badguy...
Dark City - Our hero in that too can change this world as he sees fit. Battles between the baddies ensue in settings and a visual style that look much like The Matrix (aside from the '50s aspect of it). Yet... IT CAME OUT FIRST.
Total Recall - "The red pill, and you forget any of this ever happened. The blue pill, and we take you further." That part of the two movies are very similar.
Ghost in the Shell - Similar gun battles, similar ideas. (Though, this too is very similar to Neuromancer.)
And The Matrix almost used STOCK FOOTAGE with the scene where they run across the rooftops in the dark. It looks nearly IDENTICAL to when Eric Draven does that in The Crow.
(Not to mention the shot in the teaser for "Reloaded" that has an agent walking toward the camera, with CROWS flying about!) (And, once again, it's almost exactly like the shot in The Crow with his ONE crow.)

i agree with everything you say. the matrix kind of started a lot of styles and effects that are used today, and it also was THE most ass kicking movie that i've seen in the past few years. and i also agree about bond. i love brosnan as bond. i've seen all the other ones, and brosnan just has something about him that shouts this character. he's a perfect bond.

I love The Transporter (except for that cheesy romantic music they played when he opened the trunk - ugggghhh! It was so out of place)
On a side note, the reason I haven't seen Equilibrium is because it wasn't released in the theatre near me yet. So for now, The Matrix is still in front of the pack.

Since it was released over three years ago I don't really consider The Matrix "of late". Therefore I have to go with Equilibirum, which was by far the best action movie I have seen since The Matrix.
