I read two books over Xmas - both were great and highly recommended.

The first one "Round Ireland....With A Fridge" by Tony Hawk is an amusing tale of a man accepting a bet that he can't hitchhike around ireland in less than 30 days, with a fridge! And it's all true!

The second one was Michael Connelly's new novel "Chasing The Dime" which was up to his usual high standards, and a joy to read - not to mention a great climax.

I've just started reading "6 Days" by Brendan DuBois, which so far is great - his last book "Ressurection Day" was one of my favourites that I discovered this year - again, highly recommended for those who like "what-if" fiction (i.e. a slightly altered reality, but wholly based in the realms of the plausible - for example Resurrection Day sets the premise that instead of Cuba backing down in the Cuban Missile Crisis, there was instead a limited nuclear exchange between the superpowers, which has left America as a shattered nation, and the British rulers of the planet once again. On top of that, there's a rumour that JFK is alive..... good stuff!)

I've just finished the 1st half of Superman Vs Alien, Kind of a weird crossover. Superman discovers a peice of krypton that has survived the explosion of his home planet. Unfortunately its been overun by Aliens (you know the burst out of your chest ones). he joins the few survivorsin fighting the overwhelming beasts. he then gets caught and "impregnated". theres another comic that continues from this one but i couldnt find it anywhere.

I just finished reading choke by chuck pahlaniuk, and its a great book. Though I wouldnt say its his best. Its a bit more positive then his usual stuff, but still has his insane and incredible sense of humor and sarcasm.

Also I just finished reading this excellent Frank Miller masterpiece Hard Boiled, holy shit! When it comes to non stop violence and all out gore, theres nowhere better to look then anything written by Frank Miller. This story though thin is just completely outthere in terms of being ultraviolent to the extreme!

Hey, Watchman! Sorry for the belated response. I forgot to check up on the thread. I actually just finished another Pike book earlier today and wanted to post that bit of info here. The book was See you Later, by the way. It was as good as I'd remembered.

As for the "Remember Me" series, I actually haven't read the second one, but the third one is pretty good. It's classic Pike. Philosophically, it's very new-age, but I didn't think it was preachy or anything. I've always liked how his work dabbled in the esoteric, and this one's no different. If you enjoyed the first "Remember Me," you should like this one. I'd definitely recommend picking it up next time you're at the library.

Hope that helps.

I just finished reading the latest issue of Scientific American. This is easily the best issue they've produced in a while. Of speical interest are articles outlining a new theory on the evolution of feathers which includes new fossils of theropod dinosaurs that reveal early forms of feathers (it's even speculated that theropods like Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor may have been feathered); an article on dark matter; and lastly one about parasitic microorganisms that alter the behavior of their host as part of their reproductive cycle.

Yes! Someone else who's reading CrossGen! I think they are putting out the strongest line of books on the market right now (if not the best individual comics). I get both Forge and Edge and I've not been disappointed with them yet.

This weekend I finished The Stone of Tears by Terry Goodkind. It's the second book in the Sword of Truth series, which I think is up to seven books now. Unfortunately it's the last one I'll be reading. I'm not quitting the series because it's bad or anything (although it is almost a carbon copy of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series). It's actually pretty engaging, and has some of the best characters in any fantasy series I've read. I'm quitting because Goodkind is such a blatant misogynist. It got so bad by the end of this book that I almost quit with only 50 pages to go. I mean, I think almost every female character except maybe two has been sexually molested, and most of them have been raped. Also, whenever one of the female characters is conversing with any male character, the female is always wrong and the male always has to correct her. Always. Without fail. Sorry to go on about this but I just want to let people know before they get into the Sword of Truth series. If you can handle all the misogyny though it's a pretty good read.

As far as comics, I also read the first volume of Planetary by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday this weekend. Frankly, I don't see what everyone's going on about. Maybe I heard too much praise about it before I read it, but it didn't wow me like I thought it would. It had some great ideas though. Certainly worth a look.

Today I finished FUTURE NOIR: The Making of Blade Runner. Wow, I'm really impressed... 500 pages about the events behind the scenes, the history of its re-release as a Director's Cut version, lots of facts about the critical reception etc. Sure, the book has some flaws (tends to fanboy style of writing at times and has shitloads of typos) but overall it's an interesting read for everyone who wants to know more about this groundbreaking film.

And I finished Cat's Cradle a couple of days ago... quirky Vonnegut style spiced up with some social criticism. It doesn't even come close to his masterpiece Slaughterhouse Five but is nonetheless one of his better novels. Highly recommended!

I just finished Ian Spiegelman's debut Everyone's Burning. Not bad at all, awesome writing style similar to Hubert Selby Jr, a fav. of mine, however the novel lacks a plot and has a sloppy narrative. Although the characters are memorable, and there are a couple of scenarios that stand out as incredibly funny and smart. Probably a B/B+.

The last few books I finished reading would be:

Porno by Irvine Welsh, a pretty damn good follow up to the excellent Trainspotting. Would be nice if the Trainspotting cast/crew could get together again and film it.

The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger - Wasn't quite what I expected, but it was pretty goddam excellent. Just where the hell do those goddamn ducks go when the lagoon gets all icy and frozen over? Does some guy come in a truck and take them away to a zoo or something? Or do they just fly away?

Hannibal by Thomas Harris - I'd seen the film a couple of times already, and I guess for the most part the book is probably better (all the stuff about Mischa and Margot and Mason that wasn't in the film helped), but I thought the ending of the film was a bit better.

THE CABINET OF CURIOSITIES by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

A solid horror thriller with a very weak conclusion. Of all Lincoln/Child characters, Pendergast is my favourite and it was nice to see him back in action. However, most other protagonists were caricatures rather than real human beings, and I'm getting sick of these "dumb cop" characters in their novels. The book was pretty suspenseful and rather subtle by Preston/Child standards, but the finale was a wee bit OTT and unintentionally funny, and pretty much ruined the meticulously built-up atmosphere. However, methinks you can't expect more from an easy summer read like this. Hmmmm, where do I see this in the authors' overall oeuvre? It's definitely better than THUNDERHEAD and RELIQUARY, but can't quite reach RELIC and RIPTIDE.

Dagnabit that was the fastest response to a post I've ever seen . You're quick. A little too quick.....

Anyways, Hershey's is just a company (or subsidary company, I'm not sure) that makes chocolate and chocolate bars. Their mottoe was "Hershey's: unchanged since 1867" or something like that. Some random number. They had an advertising campaign where they showed how change was bad, then showed how they didn't change, all in a mocking fashion.

A few days ago - "Fifth Business", by Robertson Davies.

Ugh.

Annoying characters (i.e. Percy/Boy or Paul/Faustus/Magnus - some characters tend to change their names a lot for some reason, as that might show), coincidence after coincidence in order to serve the plot (why does everyone the main character seems to meet try to throw him off by speaking a different language? And why are those languages only ever Spanish & German? And (one of the aforementioned coincidences) the main character just happens to be fluent in Spanish & German), and an ending that makes no sense AT ALL

(*SPOILERS* What the shitty fuck caused the main character's heart attack? And who the hell was that postcard referring to with "The Five"? *END SPOILERS*).

Glad I'm finished that now. I would've just stopped reading a while ago if I didn't have to read it for school.

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS
Wow. I had no idea this was gonna rock so hard! Book one was definetely the best of the four volumes, but it still had a high level of excitement all the way to the end. Some great reading!
I've been holding this off for quite some time, simply 'cause I wasn't so sure it was as good as people claim. I was wrong, of course.
The artwork does its' job most of the time, and other times it's borderline genius. It helps that he wrote the damned story, I'm sure, but there are moments that just gripped me by the throat, shook me like a rag doll until all my teeth flew out my mouth, and then shook me some more.
This story is of course, more than just the tale of a once-retired Batman coming back to save Gotham City. It is also a social commentary on our fascination with the media, America's fear of the Cold War, the morality (or lack thereof) of taking the law into your own hands, and if you DO go Death Wish on someone's ass, are you any more righteous committing a crime in the name of justice? yadda yadda yadda. Hm. Maybe Judge Dredd would have something to say about that.

I love Bruce Wayne's internal battle in Book One. He fights his hatred for being stagnant to the increase in violence at Gotham City, and begins the transformation to take action once again while sitting in his living room watching newscast after newscast reporting violent acts as he switches channels on TV.
Once he dons the batsuit and goes back to kick ass and take no prisoners, he comes back with a vengeance! Some moments are borderline cheesy, but somehow it comes off as touching. All that says is that the storytelling is top-notch!

Anyway, if you read comics, I'm sure you read this one already. If you don't read comics, this is the place to start.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. I enjoyed the book very much although I would've been more shocked if I hadn't already seen the film. But it was a good read and my first Palahniuk novel, I think I'll check out some of his other books.

How was it? Is it a good series? I'm considering trying them out myself and am curious.

Friday I read "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl, and "Harrison Bergeron" by...can't remember. Chuck - something, I think.

Both were damn good.

Daniel Keyes' The Mind of Billy Milligan.

[Actually I finished it almost a week ago]

I highly recommend this one to everyone! It's a fact-to-fact and word-to-word book based on a true story about a man who had minds of 23 other personalities other than his in his head. It's well written and easily read, I just kept devouring page after page and enjoying every line.

A group of vampires decide to wreak havoc in Barrow, Alaska, during the 30 day period of sundown. Yay. Sounds like fun!

Wow. This was a terrible book! The two coolest things about this comic was the title, and the premise. Very cool stuff!

I had a vague and barely memorable dream last night that was more pronounced than the 'artwork' (ie, mess) in 30 DoN.

Thankfully this was a really quick read, but unfortunately that is part of the problem. It only takes about a half hour to read, and during that half hour you run into way too many horror cliches for comfort, which sucked this reader's enthusiasm dry.

Then there are the unexplainable illogicalities:
the crazy guy that's saying 'The End is Near [maniacal laughter]. They're Coming!'; a group of townspeople that seems to have a population of about 6; a group of vampires that might total about 4 (except for the first shot of them coming into town; where'd they all go to?!!); a 'Leader Vampire' that comes out of nowhere; extremely pointless and painful narrative that tries to be solid and memorable in its' melodramatic simplicity but comes across as painfully trite; characters that are introduced but end up being completely pointless; very little sense of TIME (it felt like everything happened in about 4 hours); plot threads that attempt to have a meaning but end up being cut short or never completed; and a conclusion that left me scratching my head with the logic of it all. - How did this conclusion make sense within the reality of the story again? This was wayyy to simple to figure out, buddy!

Thank God this was such a short read, because if it was longer than it would be more bad writing and more groans escaping my mouth for a longer amount of time.

Give ME the rights to make a script on this story, because I could polish it up and make one hell of a badass vampire movie!

I have to say it; this vampire story SUCKED!!
