Universal Picks-Up Vardalos's Connie and Carla

Wednesday, December 11, 2002 6:23 CST

Variety reports that My Big Fat Greek Wedding writer and star Nia Vardalos is ready to tackle her first studio feature. Universal Pictures has come aboard as a domestic distributor on her next project, the music-driven Connie and Carla which she wrote, will star in and executive produce.

The project, which is expected to have a director by year's end, is aimed to go into production in April with Spyglass Entertainment producing and handling international distribution rights.

The female buddy comedy is about two working-class dinner theater singers (one of which will be played by Vardalos) who are forced to go undercover in Los Angeles as drag queens.

"Greek" producers Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are in talks to come on board as well.

I am not excited. The plot sounds simply horrible, but I liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding, so I might catch a matinee. I am suprised they are doing another music-themed female buddy film after the paltry box office of The Banger Sisters. I guess they'll milk the lines "From the makers of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", and "From Tom Hanks, the producer of "My Big Fat.....".

I think it sounds pretty good actually. And THE BANGER SISTERS actually did decent at the Box Office and is sure to do very well on video. I can't wait to see it, my cousin and aunt said it was absolutely hilarious, and they are extremely picky. It looked hilarious and I love the music.

The plot does sound pretty iffy, but I have faith that Nia Vardalos will make it all work out. She showed an enormous talent for comedy in GREEK WEDDING, and with luck, lightning will strike twice.
