Wasn't sure if this was already a thread, but I thought I'd bring up this classic '70s exploitation film (if it already was a thread, please do not reply with a link to the original, that's just unnecessary). I just picked it up on DVD and it's loaded with really cool extras, including an interview with one of the stars, commentary, trailers, and more. I highly recommend it.

***SPOILERS!!!***
By the way, was anyone else in shock over the end credits stating how the film was based on actual events? I mean, seeing what the killer did to those girls (nailgun through the head, anyone?) and then imagining it actually happening is pretty jarring. Another reason why I find this film so interesting.

I've heard both positive and negative things about The Toolbox Murders. Blue Underground's disc is quite appetizing, though. I may just pick it up sometime next year.

Really? I've heard nothing but good things from all who have seen this one. What have you heard?

I was able to locate the negative review, and it's not as negative as I recalled. So, I retract my earlier statement. I've heard mostly positive things about The Toolbox Murders!

This is the review I was referring to...

I read the review and for the most part, it's positive. Three out of five Jim's (whatever the hell they are). Thanks for the link. Do you plan on checking the film out now?

I might get it after Christmas. I'll probably have plenty of cash to squander away on things that I don't really need. The Prowler may land in my chopping cart as well.

Yeah they do that to avoid having a bunch of different threads about the same movie, dude.

FYI:

The actor who plays Kent in Toolbox is the same actor who played Will on Land of the Lost, a groovy TV show from the 70's.

Everyone's raving about this film... Lemme step in...

TOOLBOX MURDERS is... ok, I guess. The first 30 mins. or so features a lot of brutal killing followed by copious amounts of blood n'gore. From there, it turns into an extremely boring, psycho TV-drama. I have it on video and am satisfied with that, but, I would not discourage anyone from watching something they've never seen before. I mean, it has it's fans. Besides, I make it a habit to watch any and all horror films, no matter how bad I forsee them being.

The film had to have a story, mainly because it was based on actual events. Also, if it didn't, it would just be scenes of vicious killings for no reason and no explanation why.

I completely agree with you. But it didn't have to be boring. When I say boring, I mean you want to go comatose.

Really? I didn't think the story was all that bad or boring. It is incredibly easy to figure out who the killer is though, that is one problem I had with the film. I mean, the second he stepped on-screeen for the first time, I said to myself "it's DEFINITELY him." And, as it turns out, I was right.

Hey Driller Killer,

I notice you have "Slumber Party Massacre 3" listed as your favorite movie. Is it really that good? I just re-watched part 2 a few nights ago and had forgotten how much fun that film was.

Absolutely! The best horror film ever made, in my humble opinion. I think the actors were great, it had a good deal of suspense and gore, and a twist I didn't see coming. I highly recommend checking out the DVD, it's uncut.

Did anyone else think the nailgun scene with the 70's country rock ballad playing in the background was plain out creepy?

IMHO this was one of the creepiest scenes in American Horror.

Oh no, I didn't groove to this beat at all. Man, there wasn't even a real character introduced until a good 20 minutes in. It was just the murder scenes, I mean knowning one character might have been good. The killings were kind of groovy, but I didn't find anything redeeming in this plot. Someone hit the nail on the head before, this is a gory version of a made for tv movie. I'm telling you, I've seen the whole .....
SPOILERS AHEAD .................
Right down here are spoilers....
Yes they're down a little further...
You're getting closer....
There they are...
The spoilers............

bad guy kidnap a kid and pretend they're a family. As a matter of fact, I've seen it much better done too. I thought the acting was lousy. In conclusion, I did like some of the murder scenes, I did like finding out that it's based on a true story, but I just couldn't look past the crappy monologues.

been a long time since i saw this (i have the cruddy edited Vipco dvd release :( ) but i remember really liking the bleak atmosphere and overall feel of the film. the deaths were pretty violent but i don't remember a lot of gore (probably what was cut), the acting was also very good from what i remember

it was a huge surprise and one i'll be giving another look soon

9/10

I remember hearing about this film a few years ago when Hooper was releasing his version. It wasn't until just a few months ago that I realized it was a remake of a 70's movie though. This is definitely another in the long list of films I need to locate. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I couldn't even finish the remake...just fast forwarded it to the ending and threw the shit back in the netflix box.

This is another reason why Hoopers in need of redeeming his name to me...the guys such a friggin' hit or miss and is praised like hes a Carpenter or Fulci.

Toolbox Murders is one of the more twisted slashers ever. No matter who you are, the scene with the MEGAHOT girl masturbating in the bathtub before being VERY brutally attacked and killed is something that will stay with you for a while. I think some of the revelations later on in the story are interesting and Cameron Mitchell is quite creepy in his role. Also look for Evelyn Guerrero ("Donna" from the Cheech And Chong Franchise) as an unlucky victim as well...:D

The original is worth checking out. It reminds of Prom Night, The Prowler, and The Burning. Meaning its good and it has its moments but its not a great horror flick. It looses its steam about 1/2 of the way through.

The remake is the same way. Angela Bettis is good (as usual) but the plot leaves to many questions at the end. It has some good kills in it too.
It could have been much better with Hooper as the dir. and Bettis in the lead.

Both versions are worth checking out.
