View Full Version : REANIMATOR - Love it or hate it?

Hey Schmoes. I just watched Reanimator tonight for the first time. I personally didn't think it was as good as I thought it would be. I thought that it would be more played for laughs, but (and maybe I am the only one here) I didn't get any real humor in the movie. I only laughed once with the intestine scene. Arrow says it's not to be taken seriously and that it is played for laughs, but I disagree. I thought it wasn't much of anything. It wasn't really a scary movie, wasn't particularly humorous, didn't use the love story correctly, wasn't suspensefull and to tell you the truth - I didn't care about the characters. I didn't give a shit about who lived or died. I didn't find this to be too enjoyable.

My rating - 4/10

What about you guys? Make sure to post spoiler warnings if you are spoiling scenes.

Whoops - just realized this should be in the Past Horror Movies forum. Sorry about that moderators.

It wasn't as good as I expected, but it's still an enjoyable movie.

Is Bride Of Re-Animator worth buying/renting?

And BTW Andrew Tom, are you about to sell any flicks? I could buy some, if you have any good ones. This just came into my mind, because were both finnish. (I told this in english, so no-one wouldn't create any stories about a finnish conspiracy http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif)

The Re-animator is one of my favorite "get Baked and watch" horror movies.

Its a total rarity when a movie can perfectly balance comedy and horror without it ultimately being lame-O.
~~
http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif I haven't seen the sequal. In fact, I cant track it down anywhere!! (GRRRRRRR>.....)

I love Re-Animator! It was easily one of the best horror gross - out comedies of the 80s, just behind Evil Dead II. It perfectly blends it's extreme gore with pitch black humor, and throws in some... well interesting nudity (Dr.Hill's head gets some action) that all adds up to an awesome, and entertaining flick. It's a surprisingly well acted, at times quite suspensful twist on the zombie genre and god damnit I love it! 9/10

As for the sequel, I love it too. Not as much fun, but still an extremely entertaining gore fest. Fans of the first should love this one. 7 or 8/10

Very good point. Most of The LoveCraft movies are pieces of trash...
Does anyone remember the Necromanicon??
What a terrible movie!!

I loved the Re-Animator. Naked Zombies and a flying tupee petending to be a dead cat. The zombie in the straight jacket was very creepy.

I own it and I like it.
It is full of black humor and you have nudity and zombies.
Too sad for Crampton.

When I first watched the RE-ANIMATOR, I didn't like it and didn't find it funny because I thought it was too gory to be so.

Years later, the same film appeals to me in a way that its so deadpan that you have to appreciate black humour to get it.

Jeffrey Combs glues THE RE-ANIMATOR together with his characters persistence at raising the dead.

Also, dead resurrected head love.

I dig both films equally. Dr. Herbert West rocks! Only Combs could bring that maniacal, yet loveable edge out of a character.

Just finished watching it uncut for the first time about five minutes ago. I thought it was awesome, personally i thought the zombies looked great, the gore was fantastic and Barbra Crampton to be... well "it's break time". GREAT!!! if you haven't seen it, SEE IT. (I loved how almost everything that touched a wall leaved a bloodstain).

Just finished seein the Millenium edition of Re-animator and its really awesome. While watching the deleted and extended scenes I understood a lot more of the plot elements of the original movie.

For example in extended scenes we get to see how Dr. Hill has control over the will of others because of his studies on the human brain. That was good to see cause now I understand why the dean was so pissed at cain all of the sudden, and it was because Dr. Hill had controled the deans mindso that he would hate Cain. And we get to see this also at the end of the film cause Dr. Hill Lobotomizes all the zombies, and thats why they do what ever he tells them to. Because he lobotomizes people to control them.

Also a little detail that was EXTREMELY cool was the fact that Dr. West is addicted to the serum, he takes little amounts of it to keep "the brain more alert" wich would then explain why he is such a loon and a genius in the first place...

And we also get to see a dream sequence that Cain has in wich BArbara Crampton is dead and she is revived by Dr. West. cool stuff this Millenium Edition kicked major ass-get it schmoes!

Well there are some interviews with Brian Yuzna and Stuart Gordon wich are ok, they talk all about how they met and how reanimator came to be..and they interview fangorias editors, and the music composer..also; the audio commetary with the actors of the film was really funny stuff, they point out all the bloopers in the film wich was really cool too. Plus the usual stuff. But the deleted scenes were my favorite extra here...I guess if your interested in character development and knowing these character a little bit more this edition is good for you, I really cant compare this Millenium edition to others cause I havent seen any of the other editions, what i can tell you is the millenium edition was excellent and I highly recommend it. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I like both of them although for some reason Re-Animator hasn't aged as well....I guess catching it at the time I did made it more fun whereas I recently watched it again and it seemed a bit dated and just didn't seem like it lived through the test of time (the sequel is still highly entertaining to me though)

****************MILD SPOLIERS****************

This is one of my all time favs. I still remeber the box starring at me from the video store shelf, the UNCUT version listed on it. Hmm who was this H.P. Lovecraft guy, don't know must be pretty cool though he's wrote a story about bringing corpses back to life gotta be ok.

I was 15 when I popped this gem into the VCR (I think the store also had it in Beta - you older schmoes should remember that...)and my life was changed.

While the story was a bit cheesy, the acting a little bad, Barbara Crampton was a hot piece, and the GORE! This was a prime 80's latex orgy and can I couldn't believe what they did with a decapitated head http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

This movie sent me on my Lovecraft quest, to this day I can't count the number of times I have read and re-read his stories.

Re-Animator 9/10

I love it. Here in the UK it's victim to cuts, the 'head' sequence, GONE. I managed to see it online and I cant wait to see that scene in context when I get the Millenium edition. Sure it's cheesy, the special effects don't really stand up. But it's just so much fun.

spacemonkey,

I have a bastardized cut copy of RE-ANIMATOR on tape that shows the extended scenes instead of the gore. So what you see in those scenes is the cut copy's filler.
I liked the touch about West being addicted, but it would have ruined the overall flow, and introduced a sub-plot not resolved. Which is exactly what the cut version felt like.
The un-cut, yet shorter version is gorier.

You know, I have a bloody copy of the DVD, the new one, but my DVD player is not hooked up yet, and it really pisses me off that I can't watch it yet.

Once again, I think that RE-ANIMATOR was great, but when I was 10 or 11, I didn't. I don't know why. Maybe its like a reverse GOONIES thing (I got it as a kid, but can't relate to it now).

I know what you mean, this has happened to me with many films too. LOve as a kid but when you grow up and see things from a different spectrum youre like "why did i like this again?" or vice versa.

I use to hate this little movie called Terror Vision cause I felt so cheated by it, mainly cause when I was a kid all I cared about were the fx and lets face it the fx in these one arent Stan Winston material but I rented it the other day and laughed my ass off cause now I get the jokes...

And yeah it would have been an unresolved storyline, you are right, still it was cool to have seen that deleted scene. Plus the stuff about The Bad guy having the ability to controls peoples thoughts that was also a cool subplot that would have fit in nicely with the rest of the movie but I guess it was hacked for time reasons.. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

There was a reason why Dr. Hill had powers, it fits in with the Dean changing his ind so quickly about Dan staying in school, and about his relationship with Meg.
It also shows why Herbert lost his serum to Hill.
