Okay fellow Schmoes, I am truly getting old. (31) I can't stand to watch MTV anymore. I remember back in the early/mid eighties, it was really cool. Fresh, innovative, and interesting. Now, I can't stand to watch it. Even shows like Real World are just rotten. (okay, I have heard good thing about Las Vegas...)

Take RW for example. When it first came out, it was ground breaking and compelling. They should have left it after the first two seasons- east and west coast. Instead, they played it out, over and over again, instead of sitting back and taking credit for being the first in the reality tv genere. Same with the Osbournes. They would have had some credibility had they not come back for a second season. I mean, they will never out do the first, in originalily or numbers. MTV is just a played out parody of itself.

Am I the only thirtysomething Schmoe that feels this way?

No, you're not. I'm 34, and stopped watching MTV back in 1986, when I joined the Army. I never even gave RW a chance, because by then MTV had already become a shell of itself by then. It is not overstating it to say that I haven't seen even one video on MTV in at least 10 years.

MTV died when Randy From The Redwoods left.

I stopped watching in 1995 when Headbanger's Ball went off the air. It really does blow now.

I'm glad to know there are others out there who feel the same way I do! My fifteen yr. old niece came over this weekend, and I watched it for a few minutes with her. I finally decided that I'd rather have an enema that watch that repetitve crap.

Here's a question- (and I probably should know this,) Is VH1 owned my MTV? What's that relationship there? I like the BTM's, and tune in to that frequently.

I'm one of the senior citizens too, I'm 34, and I haven't watched MTV since 1995. Don't know what they're showing now, and from I've been reading I don't even want to know.

I watched VH-1 a few years back because they had all those Behind the Music documentaries, and that's really the only thing that interests me in the entire realm of music television. As to whether MTV owns VH-1...I have no idea. I've heard that VH-1 has been going downhill too though.

Well, you'll all probably be very happy to learn that this is not a phenomina exlusive to the thirty and over crowd. I'm only 19 and even I can't stand MTV or VH1, and haven't been able to since I was 16 or so. No matter what age you are, pure revulsion in the face of cheesy mindless pop is perfectly normal and healthy.

Yes, MTV owns VH1. But they mostly stick to videos, and BTM stuff, I think. I don't watch either channel.

Hey, I am 21 and I think MTV has become the antichrist. So you are not alone!

My feelings about MTV are all very nicely summarized in the following Donnie Darko quote:

"You know, you're right....I am pretty troubled...and I'm pretty confused...and I'm afraid, I'm really afraid...but...I..uh...I think you're the fucking antichrist."

hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it hate it, hate it and just in case you missed it: HATE IT

Apparently every person just reaches a point where MTV just sucks golfballs through gardenhoses. It's called growth.

I guarantee down the line that the 13 year olds who watch it now will be bitching left and right about how crappy the network has become.

And in closing: Carson Daly needs to be beaten severly by a coked up biker gang.

There, evil thoughts OUT.

I havent seen anything of MTV. I dont get it. I dont even watch that much tv. Althought i do have to say Reality tv is all crap but it was somewhat entertaining at the begining i want it to end.

I dont watch much tv but it's always on. I dont know why. Wouldnt this be more suited for the tv section i thought the rant section was for movie realted rants but i'm probably wrong(i usually am.)

Im 34 but often mistaken for 25, 27 yrs old:D
Anyway, MTV is just drowning the channel with waaay too many shows & not enough of the good ol stuff I remembered many MANY years ago! All that good stuff has been branched off to MTV2! (boooo.............hisssssssssssssss)
The Only show I still tune in is Real World. And yes RW, should have ceased operations years ago. But if the audience is still there tuning in...It'll keep going and going and going and goin and going and going and goin and going and going and going and going.......................................

As Ender said, it isn't an age thing. I'm 18 and hate MTV, too.

I think it's perfectly natural to abhor disposable, worthless, facile, repetitive, tripe like that perpetually showcased on MTV. So you're not alone, in any case.

I've got to agree...MTV is targeted towards people of a certain age group...but, there are many people outside of the age group who enjoy it, and many people within it that realize just how terrible it is.

How exactly would one "beat that"? By being younger?

I've had the chance to go back and watch a bit of the ol' station since this thread went up...(shudder) worse than ever.

Yes I am considered a goldie oldie also (31 yrs old) and I hate MTV with a passion now. Maybe I am confused but I thought MTV was short for music television but it seems like they don't play videos anymore. If I want to watch a reality tv show, I can turn it to CBS or whatever channel Survivor is always on (and no I do not like reality tv ...blah) I remember long long time ago when music videos were the original purpose of MTV (..okay so I also remember the 2nd anniversary party of MTV) but it went downhill when it lost sight of its original purpose. At least I have good memories of the old MTV and the old VJ's like Martha Quinn.

happy OUT here

As the older of the older group at 38, I agree that the MTV as it originally aired was a good thing.

I work nights & I often have the tv on VH-1 for the background noise. It seems to be less NOISE than MTV, which I can't stomach.

I think it's funny to see videos on occassion, because these singers act like a 3min video is ACTING....and most are repugnant.

I'm not sure how MTV Europe stacks up against MTV in the US, but if you guys have a fraction of the shit they pump out 24 hours a day then you have my deepest sympathies!

I avoid MTV itself like the plague, but fortunately we also have VH-1 (which is watchable most of the time), Kerrang! TV (which caters to my rock tastes magnificently), VH-1 Classic (which is mediocre by day, but pretty good by night - classic rock stuff, which is right up my street!) and Q TV (not sure if you guys get Q magazine in the US, but it's a pretty good music mag (mostly...) and the channel actually plays music videos all day (which MTV used to do, back in the day! :)

Oh, and BakeTheMooCow, I really miss the Headbangers Ball too! That was such a great show!

(And for the record, I'm a zimmer-frame-tastic 32 years young! ;) )
