Did ya notice there's hardly any movies based on fairy tales? I mean I know about Snow White:Tale of Terror. But that's about it.

It's really disapointing because there are so many lesser known stories besides the ones we all know that would make great movies. Like Faithful John, for example:

Faithful John is a servant of a king. He was turned to stone trying to protect his master. The king was mourning by the stone servant wishing for a way to restore his friend to flesh. The statue spoke to him saying"Cut off the heads of your children and smear me with their blood, and I will be restored."

The king did this and John, human again placed the kids heads back on their shoulders and brought them back to life.

How's that for horror huh? Another adavantage is that fairy tales take place in medieval times so no telephones rining, no car that won't start, none of those stupid modern day horror hapanings.

Well, Silent Night, Deadly Night 5 did feature a toy maker named Joe Petto and his "boy" Pino. but that's about as close to a fairy tale horror movie as I've seen(not counting the aforementioned Snow White).

Snow White: A Tale of Terror is superb, elegant horror. It's one of the few made-for-TV flicks that doesn't have that stale made-for-TV vibe. Rumpelstiltskin was directed by Mark Jones, the man responsible for Leprechaun, and it shows. It's a more muscular version of Lep, only not as entertaining. Still, it's a decent watch. Grim is abhorrent. I swear to you that it's worse than Bloody Murder. I haven't seen Pinocchio's Revenge. Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker is the best sequel that series has to offer, which isn't saying a whole lot. Deep in the Woods is a strong slasher that deals with Little Red Riding Hood in a sideways manner. The Company of Wolves also warps Riding Hood, but I have yet to see it (it's on my chopping list). And there may be more that I’m forgetting...

Count, DEFINITELY get yourself a copy of "The Company of Wolves". You'll never look at Little Red Riding Hood in quite the same way again.

Thanks to Disney, a lot of the nastier aspects of fairy tales have been watered down. The "Snow White" film starring Sigourney Weaver is very good, but did you know that in the original story, when Snow White is restored to the throne, she orders an horrific punishment for her stepmother: to be placed in iron boots that have been in a fire until they're glowing red-hot, and forced to dance before the court until she dies.

In the original "Rapunzel", Rapunzel not only lets the handsome prince climb up her hair to the top of the tower for frequent visits, they get it on and he knocks her up. When the wicked witch finds out, she steals the baby, blinds the prince with thorns, cuts off Rapunzel's hair and casts her into the woods. (The prince's blindness is later cured when, after years of wandering the two find each other and Rapunzel's tears fall on his face.)

In the original "Sleeping Beauty", when the handsome prince (why are these guys always handsome?) discovers the sleeping kingdom, he has to cut through a thick maze of thornbushes which contain the corpses of other handsome princes who had attempted to enter the kingdom and died trying.

I won't even get started on "Beauty and the Beast". Beauty's sisters come to a *very* nasty end, based on their own individual greeds.

I'd love to see a movie version of a French fairy tale, "Petit Jean". There are many versions of this story, but the basic premise is about Jean, the youngest of three sons, his brothers bully him, he's sold to a local woman to be a servant (she's really a witch/sorceress), there's a talking horse who was once an important lord the witch has enchanted, she has a well which holds water that turns anything to gold...it's a bit of an epic. It's gory, but Petit Jean wins out in the end.

Ummm, somehow I DON'T think we'll see these versions on the Disney Channel anytime soon.:p

What I love about most of the Grim Fairy tales that i've read, is that it deals with alot of misconceptions and...well, ignorance in a society. People misjudging characters based on their appearence, there's alot of that kind of deception of the eeeeevil villian by assuming the guise of a less threatening appearence.. I'd nominate the People Under The Stairs and The Devil's Backbone.. both movies sport a serrrrrious Fairy Tale vibe.

I found a very old version of the sleeping beauty story. You know how the familier one ends? With the prnce waking the girl? Well in this version it starts with the girl already asleep and this prince comes along and,as the story puts it"gathered the first fruits of love while she slept on" Then he returns to his kingdom and forgets the incident. Girl gets pregnant when babies are born they suck out the thorn that put their mom to sleep, she wakes up and the prince reclaims her. There is a catch however; dude is already married. And his wife just happends to be a jealous cannibal. She orders the cook to kill the children and roast them. The cook however hides the kids and serves deer instead. The wife gives the meat to her husband and he eats it. Then the wife decides to kill the maiden that he husband banged up. The girl was to be place in a fire but the king stops the procedings and throws the cannibal wife into the flames. Then the king marries the girl and they lived happliy ever after.

The End.

Yet another movie we won't see on Disney.:D I'll say one thing though, I did a little research and found out that the ture fairy tales are MUCH more dark and violent then the current watered down versions of today. Either the parents back then had more faith in their kids to seperate fantasy from reality, or they just REALLY wanted to scare the hell out of them.

It may come to youre surprise but the Disney Channel used to show films called CANNON MOVIE TALES from CANNON FILMS.They are on video but r hard to find but boy where they dark.Hansel and Gretel:Stars Cloris Leachman as WITCH GRIZELDA and David Warner as the Father. It had Grizelda putting the dead kids in big gengirbread type dolls and decorating them and lining them up her house. At the end,Gretel pushes Grizelda into a vat of hot gingerbread. Then, she takes her out and she is pure gingerbread. Snow White:Stars Diana Rigg as the Evil Queen and Sarah(The Company Of Wolves)Patterson as Snow White. At the end,the Queen hits her mirror and it begins to crack wille she is on her way to Snow White's wedding. Each time it cracks, she gets uglier and uglier.Untill finnally, she is her true age and then the mirror bursts and she shatters. Sleeping Beauty:Stars Morgan Fairchild as the Queen and Sylvia Miles as Fairy Red.Sylvia Miles is very frighting as Fairy Red.She is intense. My fave: Three Wishes.

In it a husband and wife are granted 3 wishes. The wife wishes for her husband's uh,member to grow larger claiming he'd be happier if he was bigger. However it gets so big he can't even walk,so he uses the second wish to make it smaller. It gets so small it almost disapears. The third and final wish restores the member to its original size.:D

In a book I read on the history of fairy tales they weren't intended for children at all the were for the entertainment of adults.

Ever here of the tale of Blue Beard?

Dude murdered his wives and kept their bodies in a locked room. He married a new wife and gave he the key to the room saying "Don't go in there" But she does anyway and drops the key on the blood soaked floor. Blood sticks to the key and can't be washed off no matter how hard she tries. Blue boy comes home and says she will die for being diobediant. she askes for time to pray which he grants her. She looks out the window and sees her brothers riding up on horse back to save her. They run blue beard through with swords.

The End.
