i was reading a general movies thread and someone was talking about the people that work in their local video store. well, i have a problem with my video store, so i thought i would just make a rant. it has something to do with movies,...sort of.
at my video store (its a chain and it sounds like sockbuster) there are mostly nice people. a friend of mine worked there for a while, so i got to chat with some of the people. but there is this one guy who really annoys the hell out of me. one time when i was patiently waiting for my friend to fill out the employment computer thing, i asked if i could go to the bathroom. well, the gentleman that i aksed rolled his eyes at me and then got a key and walked to the bathroom. i followed...he was a jerk. but now, he is really nice to me and he seems really fake. i think its because my friend who worked there told him i complained and was really irritated.
so i don't think his niceness is real. oh well...i still go in there, but whenever he's in there, im just not as nice as i am to the other people. sure, people have their bad days at work, but i don't think i have ever rolled my eyes at someone asking a very simple question (and the place wasn't busy or anything)....and if i have rolled my eyes, i don't do it so the people see me, i wait until my back is turned. ha ha
i know that some people are going to say maybe he had a bad day, but sometimes when you have a bad day and you work in a public place, you can really show it. i was just mad he made it obvious he was annoyed at me. he could have atleast waited to roll his eyes until after i went into the bathroom. geez

I hate it when the video store clerk (okay, I go to Blockbuster and I see nothing wrong with it) says "Gee, you come in here a lot". I mean, it's not like I'm some 300 lb loser (I'm 5'8, 15 years old and 125 lbs) and I do have a life, but so what if I like renting movies on Friday night after a week of hard work at school.

I too hate it when people say I go in there a lot. Once I was tempted to say "I'm actually working on my senior thesis about the history of filmmaking from the standpoint of an elementary yet well-versed viewer in modern southern America....what are your thoughts?"

I work as a movie critic for a newspaper (Movies on video only since my editor gets the new releases), and the paper has this deal struck up with the local Blockbuster... basically, I get a free movie each week and one night to watch it.
The guys at Blockbuster are in general pretty gracious, save for this girl who I swear must be PMSing every day... everytime I show up she always refuses to hand out the damn tape, always asking for ID or some official letter from the editor and all sorts of crap... the fact that I come in every saturday at the same time should tell her something. One time she started giving me crap and I felt like yelling "Look! I'm taking out a snotty French arthouse film! Do you really think I WANT TO WATCH THIS BORING THING? I'M 18 AND GET OFF ON HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS, HELLO!"
It really pisses me off since the newspaper and the Buster made the association years ago and there has never been any problems...
Next time I'll just tell her to buy the damn paper on Friday and read my reviews and stop busting my balls.
(And the French movie wasn't so bad, by the way)

Boy do I ever have problems with Blockbuster! I rented a movie and later returned it ON TIME and they're bugging me,saying I didn't return it,and wanting me to pay this huge late fee.I told them over and over again that I returned it but they didn't believe me so I asked them to look on the shelf and sure enough the tape was there. DAMN IT!!!!!!

if only some people could see that it would make the world better if they tried to be nice and respectful, but it's just so hard for people to get along with others. it really annoys me as well,

My video people have gotten alot better, but they used to be really irritating.
Ex- I was once looking for the troma movie Sgt. Kabuki Man NYPD. Now i have all these ghetto black people at my video store (no, im not racist), so i go up to the count and ask for the movie, at which point the young hooligan studiously replies "Kabuki who!?!?"

One time I made a phone call to this smaller video store and asked if they had any copies of a certain movie. She said something like, "come over and check for yourself, otherwise I don't care if you find it or not." I replied, "fuck you," and hung up. What a bitch.

Ha, that's where I gotta go tomorrow because they sent me a stupid card saying extended viewing fee$$$ for Super Troopers, and I know I returned it, because that movie sucked.
Also, why do they have to read the movie titles out loud?? 90% of the stuff I rent is horror or foriegn and I always get strange looks.

same here!   those folks freakin' irritate me!
like i come and ask: 'do you have any movies with...' ... he/she says no... then i go searching through the movies and find 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 movies with this actor!!! Gosh, if you work in a video store, you must somehow know what movies you have there! Nowadays, i prefer not to ask but to seach myself...
now tell me isn't that annoying? the 'consultant' comes to me and asks: 'can i help you? i say i want, for example, to know if they have Magnolia, he says 'I don't know'.... but why the hell did you come to me and asked me?!

Rude video store workers are the worst. Some of them look down on people who come in there, as though they're big movie geeks. But why work in a video store if you don't love movies?
I worked in a small independent video store during my junior year of high school in California, and it was the coolest place. The boss made you pass an extensive Movie Quiz before she would hire you, to make sure you had a thorough knowledge of movies and would be able to really help customers find the ones they wanted. So everyone who worked at the store knew tons about movies and were very friendly and cool. I wish all stores were like that.

It was a tiny video store called "Video works" in Laguna Beach. However, the boss switched locations a few months after I moved, so I don't know what kind of management it is under now. But it was amazing when I was there. She ordered us pizza every saturday.

Like she would name a movie and ask you to name 3 actors in it, and name an actor and tell you to name 3 movies he was in, etc. Also which movies won best picture in certain years, etc. Things that movie buffs would know easily but other people wouldn't.

I get the impression that video store owners watch Clerks over and over again because they really "identify" with Randall.
I work in a vid store. And I assure you, a lot of the customers are rude and annoying too. They sometimes treat you like shit and at times it's hard to keep smiling and be polite.

I am a video store clerk, and to tell you the truth, the things i've noticed working there for two years, is that it is usually the customer who decides to be a fucking asshole, and seeing as i'm not one to take crap from anyone or i don't care what my boss tells me, i'm gonna give the prick an attitude right back if they give me one. I try to be nice to customers, but sometimes, they have just so fucking like "smell me" attitudes that i feel the need to retaliate with some clever comment that really pisses them off and ends with the whole, "i'll never rent here again!" comment, and a week later, OH MY GOD, look who's back to rent some movies; the same asshole. I'll respect people if they respect me, plain and simple. I don't work there to be spit on and i'm not gonna let some customer think they are better than me or start something, cuz they will lose.

well, when i started this thread, it was because the jerk worker rolled his eyes at me (so i could see him) when i asked him if i could use the bathroom. so yeah, sometimes the workers can be jerks, as well as the customers. but thats why i started this thread cause i was pissed!!

Last time I went to the video store I asked the clerk (who for one looked like he was from outer space) if they had Requiem for a dream. For 1.- he wasn't even looking at me when I asked he was watching AFV on the tv beside him!, 2-had never heard of the movie and said they didn't have it, it wasn't out yet? and 3. when I asked if he could check on the computer he made this noise and then made me spell the name of the movie I felt like saying "Well excuse me for wanting to rent a movie from your store and sorry if I interrupted your tv viewing even though you should be WORKING!
Also I asked when they will be getting The Ring in and he looked at me dumfounded and said "What movie? I don't know". I was like wow you are really helpful. Damn I should try to get a job there I have vast movie knowledge, I know how to spell and I am from planet earth.

Hey I'm rude and I work in a video store. But I try not to be rude while at the video store. Unless the customers are being assbags, then that's different. I work at Blockbuster, which I'm ashamed of, being a big fan of strange and unusual cinema, which Blockbuster aren't huge supporters of, but I needed a job, and they're the only place hiring my type (lazy uneducated folk). Plus there's lots of mainstream stuff I wanna rent, then there's a lot of older stuff I've yet to see, which I get for free, that helps me keep what little interest I have in the job.
I try to be helpful and all, even though I don't really care for people, especially the normals who come in for Sweet Home Alabama, or other such rubbish. But even still I try to be helpful and not be a dick, or some kinda film snob type and heckle people for renting stuff I don't like. And I also don't do that "Okay Passion Lane is due back next Wednesday by noon!" crap, that bothers me. The only time I really get annoyed is if the same person asks me over and over every couple minutes if a movie that's not on the shelf has been returned, or something else similar to that, even then I don't really get snotty, a few of the people I work with are quite snotty though, but they're snotty to me too so I think that's just their problem.

I do hate video stores sometimes.
I was renting some classics(12 Angry Men, The African Queen etc..). I got up to the desk, the guy was checking them off. He looked at me kinda funny. I just waited. He then asked,"Why are you renting these movies?". This is most likely because I am 15. I said," Well 'cuz I have a good taste in movies and I wish to enjoy myself.". Then he said,"Well, don't you want to rent something more new?".
"Ummm, no.". He then shut up. I was kind of pissed, because he was thinking most teenager don't have any taste in film what-so-ever.

when i walked up to the counter today at my video store, the guy behind the counter was like "weren't you here yesterday?" i told him that i bring my videos to work and that i am really not a loser. ha ha we laughed, but i still didn't like that he said that. i am sure all the people that work there notice i am there all the time getting movies, but he was the first to say it. i wish the cute guy said it!!! that would have meant he noticed. but anyone else noticing wasn't good...:(

I asked a worker at our local video store about a movie and if it was on dvd. He said." If you don't see it on the shelf in dvd format then we don't have it." He had a miserable look on his face. Another time same question, different worker said to me,"Let me check the computer and see if we have it on dvd for you". She said"It shows we do and let me look in the drawer." She found it and was happen to have. Not all video store clerks are jerks.
Beleve me, clerks in stores like Best Buy,Kmart, Wal-mart and lots of more can be really be annoying. Best Buy is a great store for stuff. Customer service sucks. They love you when they take your money, but for returns on items that are deffective, they put you on the back burner since they already took your money.

I work in a video store..
I'm most definitely rude to the assholes that come in. I see no reason not to. I hate people who come up and don't even say hi when I say howdy or something stupidly comical.. So what if you're in a bad mood don't take it out on me. I'm the type of clerk who'll scream "you're our millionth customer, you get a free rental" to random people like i did last night.. why? why the hell not. that's why we have the option in our computer system. it all depends on the customer. i'm sick of people bitching about late fees when i remember returning their movies and noticing they were late, noting their account with "late fees for whatever are valid" etc.. but still, they KNOW they returned it on time.. Well, if they did, I apparently wasn't working that day and somehow had this weird dream about returning their movies the next day and noting their account.
but i like my job and most of the people i work with, but some of the customers can be real fucking assholes. i try not to take it out on the good customers though.
its not an easy job. you don't get paid much, your manager is usually a kiss ass to his superior so obviously he feels the need to force you to kiss his ass by making you to tedious tasks when he's not around.. and the customers can be real pricks. but besides that its a pretty fun job. there's not much to it in terms of work, you get all the free rentals your heart desires, and you can meet some interesting and sometimes cool people.

The store I now rent from does the same thing (I used to work for the company, which is why I now get unlimited free rentals). When I was interviewed, I was asked to name movies with Faye Dunaway in them, as well as films by Derek Jarman. I passed, and was hired the next day.
I was also asked who was my favorite directer (David Lynch, at the time). After I was hired, I was told of their policy that whoever answers "Steven Spielberg" ain't getting hired!

Last summer when I was layed-off from my job and was coasting with unemployment money. We rented movies from the local Blockbuster and always had a good time with the employees because we were regulars. Once we moved from that area and started going to a new Blockbuster, people just weren't as helpful. My little brother asked if the had People Under the Stairs and they said that they didn't carry that movie at all and that box was right there on the shelf. That is just sickening!

I used to work at the local Lackluster when I was in school, they were hell to work for. I actually worked for one of the franchises and they put both the managers and owners through hell, which unfortunately transferred to us.
I can honestly say I was never rude to a customer but can also say I kind of brought trouble on myself due to store policies. Many of us had people thinking we were being rude for not being able to give them our opinions on films what they didn't know was we actually were under threat of dismissal if we were caught doing it or telling anyone why we couldn't. As you can tell this managed to piss off more than a few employees making for angry young men and women.
Don't get me wrong, there were employees who were rude just for rudes sake also but some did have standing reasons.

I agree some people are rude just to be rude, but I fully back-up anyone who is rude to a total asshole customer, especially if the asshole customer is wanting your help. Can't people ask for help in a nice manner instead of demanding it?

I rented a video from Hollywood video and since my area had three of them close together I accidently returned it to the wrong one.
Well months later I got threatening mail talking about legal penalties for me not returning the movie and massive late feets in the hundreds of dollars.
Long story short,
The manager of one of them saw that I had returned it to the wrong one and put it in on his desk to bring to the other video store but never did.. Instead he let it sit on his desk there for MONTHS!!!!!!!!
He then quit the job and never told anyone about the tape.
I threated legal action unless they cleared up the credit issue.

LOL, and you're blaming the video store? You should read the bottom of the tape before you return it. The label on the tape clearly states the address and phone number of the store it was rented in. You might as well have dropped it in a mailbox slot, or a blockbuster slot. I mean, you can't expect somebody from another store to do what you should have done.
Its not up to us to return your movies. If I encounter a movie for another store, I might run it over if I remember, but its hardly in my job description to worry about your lost video rental. If you return it to my store and it gets lost, thats another story. If you went to the store the movie was checked out in, I'm sure they would have mentioned it to you. Something like "Have you returned <insert title here>, its 22 days late. If you could, just go home and check around see if you can find it, (and maybe they'll say) we're doing a store inventory next month so if its in the store it'll definitely turn up". And you probably said "hey, I returned that, yadda yadda yadda".. When in reality, you didn't. Our computers aren't connected, you scan a movie thats not from your store it says invalid rental. The employee then looks at the tape, finds that its from anther store, and then puts it into a drawer.
Every once in a while store managers have meetings and they bring tapes for other stores and the late fees are usually waved. But it is NOT store policy to do so. It is your responsibility to return the movie to the store you rented it from, not ours. If is a favor if an employee takes it upon himself to deliver your movie to its store.

Seeing that I was in that store several times after that I dont see any reason why they didnt pick up on it then. I go to three of them. AND here it is a RULE that they bring it back to stores in their region and the manager didnt follow it. (They have three stores within five minutes of each other)
And your story about the WHY DIDNT YOU LOOK AT THE ADDRESS doesnt hold water in this case.
The stores borrow each others copies. So there is no telling which store it came from since the grade B folks who work there dont update their boxes.
They still are keeping ads on boxes that expired several promotions ago.
They even told me they had no idea of where the movie came from until one of their stores reported a missing tape.
WHY not call the person or send a letter? They waited months.
Sloppy system altogether. But then again,, this is only in the region I am in now.
When I lived in another state they were much better and efficient.
Some of the videos are even stamped with addresses in other parts of the country.
And last time I checked only three of five had the phone and address of the store I rented it from. I had to play the guessing game again.
Perhaps if the stores were more uniform in what they got in or didnt get in I wouldnt have to travel so much. Stores within five minutes of each other should be similar.
And the 1-800 number was worthless. It tooks weeks to get it all settled.
Its a poor example of the local video group of stores, not the customers.
People with brains would know if you put three stores in five minutes of each other that eventually someone would return it to the wrong store.
I gave up expecting the stores to even rewind the tapes (since they hardly ever are) let me guess now its too hard to check your return tapes?
Geez, flip burgers if its so difficult for them.
And I wont even mention the two times I was charged late fees for tapes that were already restocked days ago and on the shelf when I went to rent yet they said it was still checked out.
Sounds like some folks need to talk less with friends while working and just do their minimum wage job.
And how about just maybe going through and sorting videos back into the appropriate sections?
I hate it when I get there an hour after the store opens and there is rap videos in the kids section and new releases hidden underneath obscure titles. And the ever popular "Its supposed to be here" but its not. I dont know where it is type of answer when looking for a movie.
Or the TWO DISC DVD that only has ONE DVD when I get to the house to watch it. Arent they supposed to check when checking it out? And when checking it in from the last person? Hello?
Or when I rented A Beautiful Mind and got home and instead it had "Turbulence" in it? Again, someone is not doing their job.
Again, I have to pay for workers lax behavior.
I make sure I get a free rental for every movie I rent that isnt rewound.
Its not that its a hard thing to do its just I hate to take up my time covering for someones sloppiness.
Update the labels on the tapes and this wont be an issue.
I was given 10 free rentals for THEIR goof-up with the video and a phoned apology.
So, obviously the company didnt view me to blame in the end.
Two times the workers arent paying attention: When checking out videos, or when checking them in.

I worked at a video store when younger (two of them. Both indies)
It is a constant problem getting back videos from other stores even though our covers were flame yellow and others werent.
So, its totally understandable for similar looking videos to end up at the wrong store.
We got returns from other indies that were 20 miles away.
It happens.
But NEVER would I allow a video to be checked out that wasnt checked for being the correct one and rewound.
It was a standard that seems to have been forgotten by the chains.
And I get free rentals everytime when it happens. And because of that, it hardly happens now. Because they have learned that their imcopetence will cost them.
