This flick has only opened in the UK,it had it's London premeire on 4/20.I checked out some online reviews, and Thora's performance is getting raves. The official site features an interview with the awesome Ms.Birch, where she speaks with the English accent she affected for the movie. The release date for the U.S. is not even listed,so I am asking if any of the Schmoes in the UK have had a chance to see it.If so,what did you think?
The trailer is great,Thora looks so fuckin' hot(as usual)...
If you are in the UK,go check it out.Thora is one teen actress who DESERVES all the support she can get.Damn...she is the goods...the whole package.

I saw it! In fact,I just replied to a topic about The Hole in the other forum.
I thought it was very good.Sort of like Blair Witch Underground Without Camcorders.
Thora Birch isn't that hot.If you think that now,you probably won't think it at the end of the movie......

Griffin...
Cool to see that you enjoyed the flick.I just read a review in 'Chiller' magazine, and they loved it.I understand that it so much more than the garden variety "teens in peril" flick.More on the psychological, mind fuck level.I'm glad Thora jumped on board for it,by all accounts she is terrific in the movie.
As far as her being hot...nothing could diminish my opinion of her. This girl is stunning, and she radiates an inner splendor that cannot be tarnished. She is the hottest woman on the face of the earth in my eyes.
I understand that this is not the most glamorous role, but this is why I love her.She has the balls to challenge herself, and to flex her awesome acting chops. She is not an airhead trophy who needs to prance around like a vacuous bimbo. She is a legitimate actress, not an empty sweater. She epitomizes grace, beauty, style, and talent. She is gorgeous in anything she does.
Cheers,

Its fantastic! (im actually reading the book, which the film is based on right now!) it is funny in places, disturbing and pretty intense- Thora Birch's accent is ok- but it wavers a lot- she sounds American for a lot of it. Its also a bit sick in places- so if u have a weak stomach avoid (the whole toilet thing....ewwwwwgh!!!)
My boyfriend has fallen in love with Keira Knightley, who is the other girl in it- and Desmond Harrington is pretty fine!!!
it is VERY flawed, though- many plot 'holes', but i was still thinking about it 3 days later, its that intense!

Although I'm not a huge fan of The Hole, I admire it for its originality and defiance to conform to the teen flick formula. OK, the cast were a little too goodlooking to be true, but the overall acting was solid and the atmosphere created was astounding.
Thora Birch was adequate in her role (I preferred her in American Beauty, more of a subtle role) and her accent was alright. Just alright. Keira Knightley performed quite well in a somewhat small role, but then again she shot to fame in a small role (In Star Wars Episode One, she played Queen Amidala's main handmaiden).
Throughout the film, I couldn't help but shake the feel that it was a view of how English schoolchildren should be- well-spoken, private school attending, pretty little things with names like Frankie and Elizabeth (the girls) and Geoffrey (the English guy)...that was my main hangup.

Thats pretty much English Private schools for u... and what u sed about them all being good looking....i dont think Thora Birch is that pretty. and her accent was pretty crappy in it! in any case if u want to read the book it is called 'After the Hole' and it is by Guy Burt. i really recommend it.

Ms.Fatale...geez,give Thora a break. She is one gorgeous girl.In this flick, along with "American Beauty" and the upcoming "Ghost World" she plays DOWN her looks to better suit the character.Believe me,if Thora chose to,she could just bag roles that accentuated her fabulous looks and awesome body. But,then she'd be stuck in the putrid tripe that so many actresses in her age range appear in.She's too fuckin' smart to go down that route.
According to the official site, this flick ("The Hole")was having major problems getting financed. When it was learned that Thora signed on to star in it,the money started pouring in.So,she was vital to this movie being made in every aspect.

Thora fans:
Correct me if I'm wrong isn't she doing another horror flick, "Ghost World".
If so, what is the buzz on that one?

RBnyc...
Well, first off,"The Hole" is not really a 'horror' flick. It's more along the lines of a taut, stylized, psychological thriller...with some gruesome bits thrown in.
I have not seen it,'cause the release date in the States has not yet been set,but this is the vibe I get from reading the reviews.
Now,"Ghost World" is far from a horror flick. It is going to be a very dark, black comedy. The movie is based on the classic underground comic "Ghost World" created by the brilliant Daniel Clowes.Terry Zwigoff(of "Crumb" fame) is directing,Clowes and Zwigoff wrote the screenplay, and John Malkovich is the producer. The cast includes the brilliant Thora as Enid Coleslaw, the main character(by the way,Thora so nailed the look of Enid from the comic...she is a dead ringer),Scarlett Johannson as Enid's sidekick,Brad Renfro as the resident slacker/love interest,Illeana Douglas as one of Enid's teachers,Teri Garr as Enid's stepmom, and Steve Buscemi as Seymour,an album collecting geek who falls into an affair with Enid(Buscemi is a lucky fucker to score those makeout scenes with Thora!).So,as you can see, there is some eclectic talents collaborating here.
There has been tremendous buzz on this flick. The May 24th issue of Rolling Stone Magazine features Peter Travers "Summer Movie Guide",and I had a chance to preview it.This is his rave on the movie:
"GHOST WORLD is everything you don't expect when you connect comic books with Hollywood.Working with Daniel Clowes, the gifted director Terry Zwigoff brings delicate feeling to this raw-edged tale of two teenage girls who are out of sync with the world around them.Birch(as Enid Coleslaw)sneaks into your heart, and stays there.Zwigoff's stunner of a film is a rebuke to everything crass that Hollywood is bombing us with this summer.Don't duck this one,it is a winner!"-Peter Travers;ROLLING STONE
Sounds like a real kick ass flick to me.Thora is going to smoke the screen with this performance. She is simply terrific.

VonEerie,
Thanks for all the info. I don't blame your fondness for Thora. She is talented and beautiful. For me she is too young and not my look. I'm partial to Michelle Williams, Amanda Peet and not often used Claire Forlani. I just can't cut it down to one.

Just cos i dont think she is that pretty you have a go at me? I also dont think Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera are pretty. it isnt to do with the fact that she played down her looks in the film- she is dressed up a lot in one scene and i still dont think shes that pretty. it isnt cos she is different looking either- all i am saying is that i think they could have found an english actress to play and english person in an english film, or at least taught Thora to talk with a semi-decent accent, they only chose Thora Birch for the fact that she is famous, that is obvious by what you said about funding, but there are plenty of extremely talented British actresses out there- look at Keira Knightly shes one of the best things in the film.

Ms.Fatale...
I was not having a 'go' at you,I was simply stating my opinion. And as far as the examples(Spears,Aguilera,Lopez)you listed,I totally agree with you, they are NOT pretty...but why did you feel the need to pollute this topic with their names?Who gives a fuck about them? Not me...I assure you.
Now,you also stated that Thora was bought on because she is 'famous'...really? Hmmm...I tend to disagree.I think she is more along the lines of 'respected',and THAT'S why the producers kicked in the cash.Let's face it,this flick is not another "I Know What You Did Last..." A REAL actress, not some airhead bimbo, was needed. That's the reason they were enthusiastic about Ms.Birch signing on.
Yes,Thora has achieved a level of noteriety for the topless scene in "American Beauty",but her performance was so much more than that. She was amazing as Janey, and I sometimes wish she did not do the topless scene,'cause it took attention away from her tremendous acting. But,I think all serious movie lovers, and Hollywood in general, recognize the fact that she is an awesome talent. This will be further proven by her petrformances in "The Hole" and "Ghost World".
Could they have found a British actress to better portray Liz? I doubt it.And,remember this, the producers will need U.S. distribution for this flick, and having Thora on board enhances that.I think that after the success of "Ghost World",which opens on August 3rd here in the States,it will be easier to Get U.S. distribution for "The Hole",not because Thora is 'famous',but because she will be so critically acclaimed for her performance in "Ghost World",and people will want to see more.
....not pretty? http://i3.yimg.com/3/5f53ac3a/g/1/28bd2e3b.jpg...

Ms.Fatale...
One more thing regarding this subject.According to the official site for "The Hole",the director(Nick Hamm)wanted the character Liz to be an American student in England. Now,I have not had a chance to read 'After The Hole',so I am not sure if Liz was, indeed,American in the book.
But this is what happened...Thora INSISTED on making the character British, because she did not feel that Liz needed to be that much of an 'outsider',to better suit the character. This is the decision Ms.Birch made after reading the original script...so,it was redone to better facilitate Thora's interpratation of the role.
Thora spent months in England learning the nuances of the accent, and the general feel of the school system and all of it's trappings. She did not just pop on the scene and say "Right, then,I'm British!"...she researched it thoroughly, and gave it her best shot. Can't fault her for that.
And,hey,if you don't find her to be pretty...so be it.She is an Angel in my eyes, and always will be.To each his(or her) own.
Cheers,luv...

lol- i guess my reply sounded a little premenstural- i assure u that wasnt intended.....I have read the book- and Liz is English in it, and the author of the book was apparently really p*ssed off that the film producer wanted her to be an American, and thats why she was made English- or so i have heard...
I included the names of the ladies because i didnt want you to think i didnt think she was pretty because she isnt mainstream with a barbie doll look- i just dont think she is attractive, and those photos you sent links for, she looks, well, kinda tacky in all that PVC and flashing her body like that...dont get me wrong i think shes a decent actress, but you get the wrong kind of reputation in Hollywood not just by the movies you star in, but through the pictures taken of you!
