Here are some of them :
Abre Los Ojos, The Hitcher, Near Dark, Henry, Driller Killer, Tokio Fist, Lost Highway, Bullet Ballet, Battle Royale, The Nameless, Ring ( japanese version ) Cure, El Arte De Morir, etc ....
All these movies are not really for the regular audience but deserve to be seen ( well if u are open minded )
Sometimes u miss some good movies by saying oh this is not my kind of movie or by saying that looks too weird to me.
Try them.

I consider "Taxi Driver" and "Apocalypse Now" to be horror, although I'm sure not everyone would.
I also consider many of David Lynch's films to be horror, like "Blue Velvet," "Eraserhead," "Fire Walk With Me," "Lost Highway" and to a lesser extent "Mulholland Drive."
Jason13thh, you don't consider "The Hitcher," "Near Dark," "Henry," "Driller Killer," "Ring," or "Cure" horror? How come?

I do consider them as horror movies, I have never said they were not horror movies.
They are different I mean.
Try a 1981 horror film called: Possession. It stars Sam Neil. This is one eerie story. In order to appreciate it though, you need to get the UNRATED/UNCUT version. Watch this film and then tell me Clive Barker didnt fuckin rip off "certain" elements in Possesion when he made Hellraiser... 6 years later.

Jason13thh, I guess I didn't understand what you meant by "different."
Dude, I seriously want to check out "Possession." It reminds me of a movie David Lynch was working on before "Eraserhead" called "Gardenback." Is "Possession" worth purchasing sight unseen?
NightWatchman,
As much as I liked... more INTRIGUED by the ENTIRE premise... this is an adult "doppleganger" film... not that Drew Barrymore crap from a few years back. I would never suggest telling anyone to drop $20 based on (my) taste in HORROR. I'm more of a refined as well as offbeat horror person. I tend to like horror to be sophisticated before being campy. Now, that doesnt mean I dont like Evil Dead II, but I also HATE stuff like Jeepers Creepers, Jason X, etc... The film does contain some VERY INTENSE scenes, blood, and one EXTREMELY erotic but HORRIFIC sex scene. The film starts SLOW and builds slowly to a weird climactic ending. It's almost reminiscent of an Italian horror flick... somewhat disjointed.. but directed and acted quite well, with an okay storyline.... unlike most Italian horror movies.....come to think of it, this may be Europeon.. check imdb for more info. If you have any luck in renting this on dvd it may be the uncut version... the vhs was cut all to hell. This is one of those obscure little gems that one needs to probably purchase cause the video stores probably wouldnt carry it... I'm a NETFLIX Member, and as GREAT as they are for carrying MANY obscure titles... THEY dont even have this one.

Thanks, Dude. If I find it for around $20 I might just take a chance on it anyway. I've certainly plopped down as much money for less worthy flicks.

Possession- 10/10
Unrated but contains Brutal Violence/Gore, Nudity and Disturbing Content.
I won't ruin the story, I'll just say it's about a relationship gone sour x1000. The entire story is a metaphor, see if you can figure it out while watching.
Acting- 10/10
Both the leads are beyond fantastic, they are real. Adjani is brilliant and Neil is the man.
Directing- 10/10
Marvelous!
Gore- 8/10
Puss and Blood Galore! Bottle in neck, beating, arm sawing, gory gunshot wounds, and lots more!
Nudity- 8/10
Adjani is nude many times and she looks great!

not mention of Angel Heart?
one of the best off-beat horror ones out there. Everytime I see it I still catch some new bit of subtlety.
and then there is Cemetary Man (or Dellamorte Dellamore depending on where you find it)... damn strange zombie flick...what was up with that girl's ariolas. They were freeking HUGE.
Possession sounds good tho, I love sam neil.

Good calls, frogmonkey. Two really good, very underrated flicks. If you like "Angel Heart," give the book it was based on a shot -- "Falling Angel" by William Hjortsberg. It might not carry as much impact knowing the ending, but it's still a more than worthwhile novel.
I agree. Angel Heart is a VERY GOOD film "noirish" type of horror flick. 8/10

A kid driving cross country plays good samaritan at the wrong time, and picks up a mysterious man who terrorizes him. He escapes, but the Hitcher uncannily dogs his trail. To tell more would ruin a some great suspense. I highly recommend this movie.

I saw a movie on Channel 4 in the UK a number of months ago that blew me away. It's called Possessed an is an Apocalyptic mystery revolving around a mysterius virus that may be the very essence of Satan and could bring about the end of the world. If The Omen and The Hidden fucked than this movie would be the offspring. It's seriously good. I don't usually watch movies if I miss the beginning...and I don't usually watch movies that are going to be on untill the wee hours of the morning when i'm working the next day. I missed the first twenty minutes of this movie and I was working the next day...but I still watched it. Gripping (and different).

"The Hitcher" is beatnik?
I guess that would explain Ryder's impromptu recital of his poem, "Do You Know What Happens When an Eyeball Gets Punctured":
Do you know what
Happens
What an eyeball gets
Punctured?
Ya have any idea
How much blood
Jets
From a guy's neck when
His throat's been slit?

There is a really weird, creepy, dark movie that I like that is not exactly horror called Dr. Caliari. It's not easily put into any category, actually. It's like a surreal dark-comedy pornographic late-80's remake of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari [it was written and directed by two guys who were heroin addicts at the time]
