View Full Version : Who actually LIKES the cat in Alien?
I've heard criticism about the 1979 classic from people who HATE the fact that Ripley takes the time to save Jones from certain death in this film.
Look no further than the Alien review on the And You Call Yourself a Scientist site(http://twtd.bluemountains.net.au/Rick/liz_alien.htm).
The review says that Ripley risks the lives of her fellow crewmembers to save Jones.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Obviously, the author hasn't seen the film because- HELLO!!-Ripley didn't know that Lambert & Parker were being attacked by the title creature until AFTER she safely puts Jones in his box.
No, I haven't forgotten that Brett's death occurred while he was trying to find Jones, but it's not as if Ripley forced him to go after Jones.
My point is, we've had plenty of creature features in which defenseless animals are among the victims, so I'm happy that there's at least one film out there with a pet who lives to the ending credits.

Call me dumb, but I don't recall Ripley costing any human's life in the saving of Jones. All she did was stuff him in a space-cat-basket, then pick him up when she ran to the escape pod.
She then showed her affection for the ginger moggy when, in Aliens, before she departed to the Alien planet she held him up and said "And you, you little sh*thead...you're staying here."
I have to give Jones props...I've been trying to get my housemate interested in sci-fi/horror films, and the minute he spotted Jones in "Alien" he was hooked (he's a total cat-lover, we have nine felines living in our house). "Spot", Data's ginger cat from Star Trek: Next Gen. has his own website; perhaps it's time Jones had one of his own, too.

I like cats, so I liked Jones as well.
Too bad we never found out what happened to him, I mean Ripley left him on board of the space station in ALIENS, after that we never hear from him again.

I have to admit, though I don't often find myself in such situations, if I were aboard a spacecraft I'd set to self-destruct in order to destroy a killer xenomorph, I'm fairly certain I'd go after the cat.

Well, for the record, this is the exchange after Jonsey gives them the slip the first time.
Parker: We had to bag it. Now we might pick it up on the tracker again.
Brett: I'll-I'll-I'll--
Parker: Go on get it.
Ripley: You get him, we'll go on.
So, is Ripley an accessory?

After starring in Alien and coming back for his contractual cameo in Aliens, Jones the cat (he changed his name from Frank before applying for the role, following the advice of his agent) spent a few years doing the convention circuit (although was always annoyed by the fact that Sigourney commanded a higher fee).
Unfortunately the highlife went to Jones's head, and before you could say 'catnip' he was getting through, err, catnip like a cat possessed. This life of excess continued for a few years until at the insistence of his agent, he checked into rehab (the world famous Betty Furred Clinic) and managed to kick the habit.
After emerging from his catnip hell, he took a small role in Stephen King's Sleepwalkers (he did actually apply for the role of the, err, cat in Stephen King's Cats Eye, but narrowly missed out on that one), but found his appetite for the film industy had waned and retired shortly afterwards.
Jones sadly passed away in 1998, leaving 16 kittens, 23 grand-kittens and a large fan-following, who remember his role in Alien to this day.

Perhaps she is. But Brett certainly seemed willing to admit he f*cked up(by not grabbing Jones earlier) & seemed equally willing to go after him. He doesn't even seem scared as he's going through the corridors after him.

what im trying to say is that every time someone went looking for him they would die and JONES would just watch and lick his/her lips. i would go after my cat but if he ran away from me, then hes on his own.

Yeah, at this point, the entire crew thinks all they're really dealing with is a 2 foot long beastie. I've heard people grumble at the supposedly bad characterization of "Alien," but I think they're wrong; the crew of the Nostromo is a very well defined and fleshed out bunch. I love this short scene in particular because it illustrates people's emotions. Ripley, Parker (who don't especially care for each other in the first place), and Brett have been completely on edge, and then have the shit scared out of them by Jonesy. Immediately they re-enforce control over the situation by establishing a pecking order -- with Brett on the bottom. Ripley's the warrent officer, so she outranks him, and Parker is his boss, so there again he's outranked. Like wolf packs and chimp troupes, stress is disappated by blaming a member of the group (rightly or wrongly) and making him pay for his foible.

Oh, man...LOL...THAT's funny. Nice one, Fettdog.
Oddly enough, my housemate is thinking of adopting *yet another* kitten. If it's ginger, I'm going to insist we name him/her Jones.
