Hell yeah! this is a fine horror fim. An atmospheric classic and one of the finest horror flicks of the sventies. It deals with a mysterious, creepy old man called the Tall Man. He is a pallbearer who steals corpses. When he steals the coprse of a young boy's brother he and his friend and other brother team up to stop him. The FX are great espeacilly when on thinks of how low the budget is. The acting is strong, and the score is classic.
The first sequel is alos great, even more fun than this one. The third one is OK.

For a second opinion, no it isn't any good. It's a boring low budget peice of crap. It richly doesn't deserves its good reputation in some circles of horror fandom. It has some cool stuff in it like the the Tall Man and the flying globes but overall the movie is sleep inducing. The sequels are campily amusing though.

I enjoyed the film but at many times the characters actions annoyed me. I first saw this movie when I was six. I hadn't seen it again in 13 years until the other night. Over the past 13 years my memory built it up to be a masterpiece of horror but after viewing it again I was somewhat disappointed. Still a good buy though. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

tsk tsk tsk..I cant believe some of you are badmouthing Phantasm. This is a bonafide horror classic, really excellent mood and just the overall idea, or the premise if you will, is completely awesome. Maybe you should just go and see your copy of Scream! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/mad.gif See now youve gone and made me mad, and thats very very uncommon...must calm down...must controll the anger...there...there...I think its working...must concentrate http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif..there it worked.

Well your entitled to your opinion and all but I tell you if youve never seen this check it out its a must for any horror fan.

The Tall Man is a mortician, one who enbalms the bodies at a funeral home. Not exactly a pallbearer. I saw this classic for the first time a few months ago and was shocked at how great it was. Bought the INCREDIBLE special edition DVD as soon as I could. The second one is awesome too. I just got 3 and am watching it tonight, then four.

*****SPOILERS for PHANTASM III******

I just watched it tonight. I'm not sure what to give it. The continuity is sloppy, with the four-barrelled shotgun being in the herse somehow when Reggie dropped it in the mausoleum after shooting the four dwarfs. Liz, the girl I'm in love with since seeing Part 2 pointlessly dies (why didn't Don go with the story of her being like Mike??? Perhaps fix in a sequel. Always is a way!) The only dwarfs in the film are in the opening, stupid zombies come into the mix, and those scavengers were pointless (I dig the Road Warrior scavengers better guys!)Also, how the hell did Reggie get a new house and Cuda in what seems to be like two days!?!? Reggie later mentions he's been restoring it for two years (Would the Tall Man have let Mike sit in the hospital for two years?) And the side plot of horny Reggie and annoying Rocky didn't appeal to me.

HOWEVER....

Seeing Mike Baldwin back is nice. Easier to mix the flashbacks with the third film, the whole plot of Mike and the Tall Man I really dig. I wish that was the main focus of the story instead of Reggie trying to get laid! Seeing Jody back I enjoyed alot! Was always a big fan of the character and while Jody's return might seem a little lame, I dug it. What makes the spheres tick is narly, learning more of the Tall Man is always a great new way to brighten your day, and the look of the Tall Man's lair and all of the space gates are awesome.

So I don't know what to think of this film? It's not great like one, or a very well-made follow up, but it sure as hell could've been worst! This film ain't that bad! Can't wait to watch Oblivion tomorrow night!!!

Any comments guys??

****SPOILERS FOR PHANTASM IV****

Well, I watched Phantasm: OblIVion tonight, and I gotta say, I had a great and enjoyable time! I thought this was a great follow up to the not all that Part III. The flashbacks to the original Phantasm were incredible, the Tall Man and the dog, the hanging scene, Jody's bedroom, and the calling voices were incredible! I loved how this film dove into the past of the Tall Man. I think Arrow said it perfectly in his review, if u're a big fan of the Phantasm story, you'll like the film, if not, you'll be put to sleep. I adore the story almost as much as the Halloween story and I loved the film.

The only quibbles are some of Reggie's few one-liners are uneeded but pretty funny (yes, some cops can be real assholes!) and the abrupt hanging kept me hanging! I wanted MORE MORE MORE!!! I wanna see what happens!! Reggie, Tall Man, Mike, COME BACK!!!!! Fuck the awesome Phantasm's End story, save that for part 6, I wanna see the end of this film's storyline.

I'm glad i got this DVD and I will watch the original's deleted scenes over and over and over! One little screw up: In the promotional trailer for the film, the deleted scene of Mike and Jody with the Tall Man in the mausoleum where Mike sprays him with the fire extinguisher is seen, however this scene doesnt appear in the film! At least it's on my cherished Phantasm Special Edition DVD!

I love this series, can't wait for Part V: Phantasm ForeVer!!! It's so painful to completely cross PHANTASM off of my "Horror Films To See List"! Oh, and I got a Phantasm Death Sphere Model Kit on its way here in the mail baby! YEAH!

BOY!!!!!!!!

I love "Phantasm" to death.....but I`m sorry, I found "Oblivion" to be deadly dull, and rather pointless. I mean it was nice to see thos old deleted scenes, but it`s like the movie was built AROUND them. Nothing really HAPPENED in this movie.

Phantasm: OblIVion was highly interesting. I'm glad that it did away with most of the campiness in Lord of the Dead. However, we still had to endure Reggie trying to get laid once more. They really need to put his everlasting erection to rest.

JayWolf

What can I say? When the women are around, Reggie forgets everything else and goes chasing. But I love the PHANTASM series. I also agree the whole PHANTASM's END thing for part 5 should be for part 6. I also want to see more of what happened after the events of OblIVion.

HalloweenShape31
04-03-2002, 07:56 PM
I too am tired of horny Reggie, but at least in this film, he's chasing after a girl that I don't blame him for trying! Still, I love Oblivion. I might get shit for this but I am such a big fan of the series that I even like 3 somewhat. Not the Reggie plot, but the subplot of Mike and the Tall Man.

so I re-watched Phantasm IV last night and I liked it yes it was a little slow but good on the story (if your into it) but I got some questions.

In one scene, *spoilers* when mike opens up a cophin and finds the tall mans clothes, did that sugest that the tall man wants mike to take his place? Cause thats what it looked like to me...also when the tall man says to mike "ive been waiting for you for a long time" this also led me to believe that mike has something special about him that the tall man wants. Am I right in this?

Plus mike isnt turned into a sphere like his brother, and he isnt turned into a dwarf either so...what was he turning into?

All those portals mean that the tall man will invade earth in a big way right? Which would fit right in with part fives (phantasms end) storyline right?

whatcha guys think? I agree that these movies ask more questions, instead of answering them...but thats what makes em cool!

That was the impression I got. Plus remember at the end of Part 3 Mike has a sphere growing in his head.
All this doesn`t answer any questions, though. It just creates new ones! But I guess that`s what "Phantasm" is all about.

I borrowed the DVD from a friend when I first saw the film a few months ago, and after watching the film, i wanted to view some of the extras, so I clicked on that, and once Angus went for the lines of part 2, I quickly turned it off because i wanted to see the sequels so bad. A few weeks later i purchased the INCREDIBLE SPECIAL EDITION DVD, one of my most prized possessions and viewed all the extras and the hidden features except for the conventions footage because I still hadn't seen 3 and 4. When I finally say 3 and 4 (after spending 25 bucks for 3 on VHS i wanted it so bad and 13 bucks for 4 on DVD on eBay) I watched the convention footage, and was a bit dissappointed that he only went through the lines of 1 and 2, but still I really enjoyed it.

Also here's a guide to the "Easter Eggs" (Hidden Features) on the Phantasm Special Edition DVD:

On the main menu, if you press UP from PLAY MOVIE, it will allow you to choose two alternate music tracks to play over the Main Menu other than the great Phantasm Theme.

On the second Specal Features menu, press UP from the top feature (It's Still Galleries or Audio Extras, I think Still Galleries) and a design that looks a lot like the AT&T logo appears, click it for a really nice little surprise!

WHY THE HELL HASN'T THERE BEEN A TALL MAN MOVIE MANIAC FIGURE!?!?!?!?!?!

I want a small Tall Man figure with the movie poster backdrop, a sphere, a dagger, and maybe a little dwarf!

I also want a 18" Tall Man figure with a sphere that says: "BOY!"

And I want a Tall Man diorama with The Tall Man standing over Michael's bed with two headstones and a sphere in the Tall Man's hand, OR a diorama of the Tall Man with a sphere steping out of the space portal!

One guess would be that there isn't enough interest/marketability for the figure, but then again the Djinn from Wishmaster is part of MM5 and I'd say the Tall Man/Phantasm series is more popular than that, but its still a possibility. Another would be that there are problems acquiring the rights.

I showed my mom Phantasm this past weekend to show her this horror movie I have been blabbering on and on about how much I love it for the past few months and she didn't like it! She thought the sphere was stupid and the acting was terrible, but for some reason, she agreed to watch the sequel next week. She may like 2 a bit better. I won't show her 3 and 4 because she'd only like them if she loved the first. Oh well.

We'll have to see what my buddy thinks of them when I show them to him next weekend.

And I just can't stop doing my Tall Man impression: "BOOOOOOOOOOY!"
