Steve-o dude I think this is one of the scariest fukin movie i have ever seen...that scene where they hear a moan coming out of the hole in the wall..scared the shit out of me. i guess its just that "real life" stories sort of scare me the most. Stuff like the excorcist and Amytiville are the only types of films that I can say really scare me. I know the whole Amytiville story was supposed to be real, so even if there is a possibility that this could have really happened, it scares me. not the sequels though... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Its a tad overrated but overall an effective ghost flick. Not quite as good as the Changeling but a worthy runner up. I thought the music was creepy as well.

yes. the music was scary. i watched THE AMITYVILLE HORROR,TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and PROM NIGHT back to back so i didn't think much of AMITY VILLE. but it did keep me up at night. in my room are 2 giant twin window that reminded me of the amity window and it scared the be-jesus out of me!

Did you know the underlying story is about financial loss and the 70's drought?
Notice the loss of the caterer's money, and the fact that Kathy Lutz is proud of owning, but it ends up cosying them dearly.
As Stephen King wrote in DANSE MACABRE "Think of the bills."

I rewatched this after being scared shitless as a kid by the glowing eyes outside the movie. I gotta say... It has aged VERY poorly. Too bad, cause I had fond memories of it being one of the only movies that really freaked me out.

I think it stands up really well with age. I love low budgets from that era, where the color is too grainy, the lens is too flat, the lighting is too dim, etc.
I'm also, of the school, I guess, where I really think the scariest parts in movies are the unseen or obscured ones. I've grown so tired of movies where there monster, or killer or what have you, is very visible and defined. The scary part isn't the eyes in the window, to me, as much as being afraid to wonder what the eyes are attached to. I know this film was done very deliberately that way, because in the end of the book, the "horror" takes a well described shape, but in the film they cut it so you could never quite see it (the part when they're running from the house, and they see "something in Kathy Lutz" sewing room...you can't see it, but you definitely know that it's coming...fucking terrifying). -Andrew

I cant say its the scariest thing ive seen, although i love it,and there definatly are scary sequences. Those eyes in the window, the music, the red room...BRRRRRR....Good characters too.
I still choose AMITYVILLE 2 over it in terms of shock and scariness. Not to mention sicness. Disturbing and realistic. With even creepier music.

Took the words right out of my mouth..sometimes what is implied is scarier than what is shown... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
