Today I was looking at my DVD's and I asked myself why do I collect them? Sure, I know I love movies and like watching them but why do we collect DVD's like we do?

Because we are movie fanatics and the thought of not owning a movie we love, is just too much to fathom

Yeah, that is a pretty good point.

i like my collection alot.... and i could just record dvds n stuff, but for me i really like having store bought, w/ the covers and packaging and having a great selection.... maybe we all secretly wanna run our own video stores... so we collect many dvd's!! (not for me but maybe)!!!
They look good, they smell good, and I'd step over my own mother just to get one. Also, I like having all my favourite movies readily available to watch whenever I feel like it. I usually watch at least one movie a day, and balls to going to the video shop all the time.

I am seduced by the production of a movie and, of course, the movie itself. The DVD format gives me insight into both and it's all crystal clear. That is why I didn't really start buying movies until DVD, I would rent hundreds of tapes, but I never really found much use in owning VHS.

We collect DVDs because they provide us with hours of entertainment. We love movies to the point that we are ready to pour our gard-earned money onto the table for a few insanely over-priced disc that will ultimately give us happiness...or will it?

For about a year I was buying VHS tapes, but then I switched over to DVD's because they were the future.
I think I had 3 or 4 movies on VHS, don't have any now.
I'd rent VHS, of course, since there was no alternative. Come to think of it, If I had been collecting VHS tapes, and had as many of the horrible things as I have DVD, my walls would just be covered in shelves holding the chunky bastards.

well it's like the movie buff's beanie babies. The topic got me thinking how much money i've spent on my movies... so here's the totals.
DVDs= 56
i'd say an average of 17$/dvd
(which it's prolly like 18 but who's counting)
56x17 = $952 :eek: wow! almost $1,000 dollars on DVD's alone. And i still have VHS!
VHS's=68
i'd say an average of $15, b/c when i bought them they were more expensive (before dvd's of course)
68x15 = $1020 :eek:
wow- that's a total of $1,972
THAT IS AMAZING! wow... but it's worth every penny b/c my collection is superb IMO.
Here's my DVD list is anyone cares DVD LIST (http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=darkface)

and too add to my reasoning,
we all live the boring life of humans. Wake up, go to work/school, eat sleep. ETC. Same thing almost everyday.
So watching a movie about someone saving the day, or a movie that makes you care more about life seems to lift you a bit.
I tell ya i've had some depressed times in my life *family wise* and movies really helped me by giving something that i could never have. For those 2 hours my mind leaves my reality and goes on a field trip. So why not have those movies at home to where if you're in the mood, you can watch at anytime.

OK, here's my list: http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=kcmsterpce
If you got a little time, try doing MY math! THEN add about 220+ VHS titles averaging about $12.00.
If you really want to, I can show you a pic of all the movie ticket stubs I've kept since 1993, and I see a movie at LEAST once a week! (Plus, I have Tango & Cash, Jan.1, 1991 - $3.00 ticket) Add the prices of those tickets if you'd like, to for me!
That would be pretty funny to get a total on THAT. Funny for others, but not for me.
I collect DVDs for many many reasons:
I let my friends borrow them; I almost always have a movie on in the background or am watching one while I'm at home; If I like a movie I think they deserve my purchase because there are so many others out there who are dishonest and never buy things and instead D/L them, which makes the real consumers need to pay more for a product; I'm a techie who is addicted to trying to get the best out of my mid-range equipment that I can get, which means I WANT good quality sound/video; I like my movies handy for quick reference in case I need it; if a movie I like is on TV, I'll watch it until around the second commercial break or after too much editing, and stick MY copy in to watch it.
I could go on, but there are many reasons why I love collecting movies...
