Basically, the story is about Jessica going to a dance academy in Germany, and discovering that it is actually a haven for witches. Argento was going to make a trilogy of stories called "the 3 mothers", and this is the first one (the other one being Inferno).

In the story, Jessica is constantly tormented by what she saw (since she's not quite sure what was going on), and the witches, or instructors, are hellbent on silencing her. That's the reason for them drugging her and finally deciding to kill her.

The witches basically try to kill anyone that find out about them and that Helena Marcos is still alive and living in the school.
But the story is basically not important.
Argento is like The Doors of horror movies. Most stuff has a hidden meaning. Did you catch the Disney and Hitchcock references. I'll give you one the pouring of the wine down the drain kind of reminds you of the scene in psycho.

A young student has to fight against a witch, she will discover that her school is not what it seems to be.
The Tanzschule is indeed the house of Marcos ( a supposed dead witch )
Very good movie, in my top ten of horror.
