You know I saw it in a drive-in when I was like, 13 - and I'll agree that Zelda was pretty damned scary at the time. Even now when I see it, I still get a bit tense during those scenes. Allaround, it wasn't a BAD movie, but nowhere near one of my favorites...

I love this flick, its somewhere in my top 20 or 30 horror. From the opening credits of the cemetery to the slam/bam ending this never lets up on the terror. Viewing it while I was impressionable it really makes you think about death. Dale Midkiff, Fred Gwynne, Denise Crosby, Blaze Berdahl, and Miko Hughes really make it go. From the story of Aunt Zelda to Victor Pascow to Winston Churchhill they are all unnerving.
My Grade A-

"Sometimes dead is better"

I unfortunately (or fortunately), read the book right before it came out. My expectations were high, so as far as the movie goes, it did scare me, but nothing like the book. The acting was good, and I got scared in the right places. Overall the movie was put together well, but I'd definitely recommend reading the book.

PET SEMATARY (1989) Directed by Mary Lambert. A box office hit based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, this above-average little horror flick tells the sad tale of Gage Creed (Miko Hughes), a toddler who is killed by an 18-wheeler in a freak accident. Gage's grief-stricken father, Louis (Dale Midkiff), buries him in an ancient Indian burial mound with life-restoring promises, which borders the title resting place for local domestic animals. The kid returns from the dead as a scalpel-wielding psycho! Herman Munster himself (Fred Gwynne) co-stars as the Creeds' wise neighbor, and Denise Crosby portrays Midkiff's confused wife. This film pretty much packs a wallop: from the horrific images of a young Hughes in psycho mode, to Crosby's haunting memories of her deceased sister Zelda, and Midkiff's visions of an accident victim-turned spiritual guide (Brad Greenquist). One of the better King adaptations (maybe because the author scripted the screenplay himself). This movie is all at once: sad, scary, gory, hysterical and disturbing. Skip the horrible sequel. My grade: B

I thought it was one of the scariest horror flicks I've ever seen. First there was the scary sister, and then there was the toddler. That toddler scared the shit outta me.

This is one of my fave movies and books! The whole thing is rather creepy. Hasn't everyone thought at one point what it would be like to have a loved one ( pet or what have you) back? Kinda makes you think before making that wish!

the sequel does suck hard! Is that one kinda fat kids mom Rose McGowan in that movie, it looks just like her. As for Pet Semetary, That is one hell of a movie. Zelda scared the hell out of me!

I really like this movie. It's so sad to see that adorable little boy die then when he comes back to life is one scary child! The part that gets me is when he says "No fair!" when Louis give him that shot. Zelda was really freaky too! I give this movie a B+

This is the scariest movie I've ever seen. I never even had the courage to watch the whole thing until two years ago for Halloween. I decided it was time to face my fears and watch it and OH MY GOD was I freaking out. I didn't watch it by myself, I never would have gotten through it by myself. I watched it with a couple friends. Anyway, this is the scariest horror movie and one of my favorites. But I won't buy it because I'm too scared to have it in my house. Whenever I pass it up at the video store I get creeped out, there's no way I'd be able to keep it in my house. I'd walk by it and get scared. HOLY SHIT is this movie scary. It's the best Stephen King movie (in my opinion). The atmosphere and the cloudy weather and spooky sematary (cemetary) in this movie send chills up my spine. I didn't find the sequel that bad, it was really corny but still pretty good. Even the sequel scared me some, definately not as scary as the first one but still creepy.

I'm not sure what I'd give Pet Sematary for a grade, for being the only movie thats managed to scare the hell out of me it gets a 10/10, but I don't know what I'd give it on a whole.
It scared me too much so I don't know what to give it! Oh well, let's just leave it at a THUMBS UP!

A VERY UNDERRATED MOVIE, DIRECTED BY SOMEONE WHO REALLY KNOWS HER SHIT (MARY LAMBERT)

I loved everything about this movie. The acting, the writing, the directing, and especially the overall story, which is truly disturbing if you think about it... The poor man (Louis) loses everyone he loves. I felt really bad for him and he just doesn't learn.... those who've seen the ending, know what I'm talking about... I give this movie an 8/10

I actually found this film really funny, and really cheesy. I think it takes itself far too seriously, and the main bloke in it is just SO stupid! especially at the end of it!

Its one of those films that are good to sit around an watch with your friends.

The little kid in it is very creepy, though...

JEN, since you're a Mary Lambert fan, have you seen her excellent 1987 flick SIESTA? It stars former real-life couple Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne, as well as Jodie Foster, Julian Sands, Martin Sheen, Isabella Rossellini and Grace Jones. The plot goes something like this: daredevil stuntwoman Barkin wakes up one morning in a field near a Spanish airport, drenched in blood, and she journeys through the streets of Spain to figure out whom she murdered on the 4th of July! Great cast, a slam-bang twist ending and a steamy sex scene between the two leads are highlights.

I was pleasantly suprised by Pet Sematary. A solid creepy film. It actually had a real atmosphere to it, a feeling something bad was going to happen. The creepiest thing in the whole film is definitely Zelda, the wife's sister.

The best!? It's pretty obvious you haven't seen Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, Dolores Claiborne or The Green Mile(kinda funny how all the best King adaptations are his non-horrors). And even if you are talking only about his horror movie adaptations then that means you are saying this is better than The Dead Zone? Christie? The Shining? It? No way! Even Sleepwalkers, which was a bit too uneven, was better than this. Even the mediocre Silver Bullet was better. Granted I'll give you the fact that this is a masterpiece if you compare it to garbage like Graveyard Shift or The Mangler. It is absolutely mind boggling, I do not understand how anybody can actually find this movie scary let alone actually like it. It is BORING! (*spoiler*) Except for when the kid gets runned over by the truck, nothing happens. Atmosphere you say? That's your excuse on why the movie is so damn predictable? You can sense something is going to happen because of the atmosphere?(by the way I am referencing this to guy who said this not you El_Phantazmo) Well, ok. If that's how you want to excuse the movie's utter predictability that way, then go right ahead. And I didn't give a damn about the characters because of the bad writing. The acting is bland. And worse the characters, the main guy in particular, are so stupid. (spoiler alert!) I mean after what happens to his kid he is still stupid enough to burry his wife there. At the risk of sounding cruel, he got what he deserved! How can a guy be so thickheaded. (another spoiler) And when the kid turned homicidal and started killing everyone, that was so phony and cheesy. I wasn't scared, I was laughing my ass off! When I reviewed this on another topic I gave it a C and **. The more I think about that the more I realize I was way too generous. *1/2 and D+ is more like it. It's not as bad as the sequal and definately not the worst King adaptation, but it is still a bad movie no matter what way you want to slice that.

I was one of the people who read the book first and couldn't sleep for days afterwards. I thought it was a good movie and definitely very creepy. Rachel's sister was freaky and gave me chills every time she called for Rachel.

I've always liked Pet Sematary. But I found it more sad than scary. Although Zelda definately upped the film's creep-factor. The film remains fairly true to the novel which is a nice touch.

The novel however, goes into a lot more detail about the history of the Micmac Indians and the history of Judd. Also Judd has a wife in the novel.

One of King's better book-to-film projects.

Besides when Freddy jumped up from behind Nancy's bed in ANOES part one, Pet Semetary is the only movie the ever gave me a true feeling of terror. I don't understand people these days. How is Louis dumb persay? The guy is grief stricken for crying out loud. He just lost his kid and it's going to affect him big time. He wants things how they were and will not care what happens, just as long as he can have what he wants back. He's being irrational and selfish because his emotions are blinding him. You people seriously can't tell me you don't experience this yourselves. Apply it to the situation! Besides, remember the bit about how once you are introduced to the power that it draws you in? That it makes bad things happen so it can draw you in? This was clearly stated in the movie. So, not only does Louis have to deal with being grief-stricken, but the fact that the burial ground is drawing him in, influencing him to use it. This applies to the scenario of his wife dying as well. Also, what's so scary about Gage? Well, think about it! Someone whom you love, care for dearly, have a special bond with, and have a certain image of is suddenly this heartless, psychotic monster that would kill you without thinking anything of it. Wouldn't that really disturb you? It's a really sad and scary thought. Also, I don't see how the movie is boring. I found it very fascinating because we got insight into these characters. We could understand where they came from on their viewpoints and care about them. That's not boring and idiotic in my opinion. What's boring and idiotic in my opinion are generic horny idiotic teens who stand there while begging for mercy while waiting to get axed by a killer when they can get out of there (obvious Friday The 13th Part 2 reference to the girl next to a door who was begging for Jason not to kill her as he moved slowly toward when she could have booked it out the door, downstairs, and gotten out of the house.) Now that's what I call idiotic and boring, especially if the same formula of horny generic teens is continued. I do like slashers, but ones that always follow that same trend are very subpar in my book.

Also, as for the sequel, I happen to like it. Sure, it can be cheesy at times (mainly with Gus). Sure, the characters aren't as strongly developed as in the first. Sure, it goes more mainstream and has more cliches. Sure, the characters don't always make the swifest moves (but they usually are panicked, experienced what Louis had, or tried to be too rational and was very skeptical). Besides that, I found it rather enjoyable and found it tackled many of the themes of the first one. Plus, it dealt with some things with a new style and atmosphere that kept me glued (sometimes, it were very moody and atmospheric). It managed to keep me watching. I find this sequel to be a real fall classic. Perfect around the fall season. But if I had been the screenwriter, I would have made Gus bury Drew in the burial ground instead of Clyde. It would have made such a better conflict at the end of the movie than what was given. Jeff having to deal with his mom AND his best friend turned into psychotic undead monsters.

I love you JayWolf!! I agree with what you stated above. Pet Sematary scared me badly when I was a kid, now it doesn't have the same power, but I'm reading the book right now and that is some scary stuff. I'm attempting to find the film again so I can watch it, it has been a few years, but none of the video stores here have it so I might go into the city and buy it at mall or something. But yeah the movie has this overall feeling of dread and a depressing mood and the book has both those but its much richer and more elaborate, I love it. Pet Sematary Two was really stupid but good in a fun cheesy way, I loved that one as a kid, I rented it a few weeks ago and its a fun fucking time. Gus is the best character EVER (well maybe not, but he fucking rocked that movie). Anyways I'm just rambling now so I will shut up.

I have read the book after the movie, then watched the movie. Didn't ruin it for me at all. I enjoy each on different levels.

Even though the movie is missing some elements from the book (The Wendigo, Judds wife, Louis climbing the cemetery fence unlike the film where he simply hops over it) it is still one of my favorite horror movies. Zelda is not as scary as she used to be, but still creepy (how the fuck can someone be that skinny??) and the music score still holds up great, while a little similar to The Amityville Horror theme. Pascow kicks ass!

8/10 is my rating, had The Wendigo been a part of this movie it would've easily been a 9/10.

I enjoyed the movie, even though I thought the book was a lot better. Yes, the film itself did have some genuinely creepy moments, especially Rachel's sister Zelda (can you say BRRRRRR!!!!!)

Yep, I think this is still a very scary film. Aside from Zelda who is still scary as hell, if features:

A extremely effective jump scare with the first appearance of the resurrected cat.

Another effective boo scare with the first appearance of Pascow

The flashback with the first boy who got buried in the Indian burial ground was creepy as well.

idk if I would callit scary per-se, the book had some creepy moments (the Wendigo) but scary to me it was not, the film wasn't really either coming from my vague memory of it. Not that it was bad-just not as great as the novel.

I've never been big on child actors, horror movies or otherwise. A select few (such as Linda Blair) turned in some genuinely great performances, but Miko Hughes never did it for me as Gage. Kid performances like Blaze Berdahl make me want to strangle the character (read: ANNOYING CRYING).

Pet sematary remains one of my favorite books( by King) and one of my favorite horror movies. In actuality in my eyes they left most key things the book had in the movie. There were a few of the more creepy elements, left out though. one thing missing for sure, was how the dead folks from the indian burial ground had a weird knowlege of secrets people didnt want people to know, in the movie it was missing(shame cause it was erily affective). Another missing element was the neibor Juds Wife.(shes just not in the film)wich is weird to me because in the book she was a big central charictor. Also in the movie Luises trips to the burial ground(including when he burrys Gage) seems way less pain staking. I mean in the book luis got injury after injury, and became so tired he almost collapsed. With all this there are parts where the movie is more effective than the book. For example in the movie the undead from the burial ground seem more dangerous, in the book they seemed sort of like retarded kids who talk alot of shit. Also seeing Rachels sister Zelda and having a real image to put with her spinal affliction made her way scaryer(swear shes the creepyest part of the movie.

movie 8.5 out of 10

book 9/10

not alot of films actually creep me out but that Zelda is a creepy bitch

The scariest part of this movie IMO is the second appearance of Zelda when she gets up out of bed and says "I'm coming for you Rachel...and this time...I'll get you."

The actor did a really job in making the character creepy as fuck. I doubt the remake will be as good as the original (if it happens) but it should be if it stays closer to the book.

Ankle slash with the scalpel to this day makes me cringe.

I saw this movie at a young age. Her sister Zelda and the little kid under the bed with the scalped messed my shit up. Good flick

Murdering children are always creepy to me; probably because I don't trust a lot of kids to begin with. Definitely in the class of decent Stephen King adaptations.

Anybody here ever read Insomnia? It's got an interesting connection to Pet Semetary.

The movie didn't scare me, horror movies never do. I read the book (which is a lot better) but even then I was ok with it. King said he hesitated for years releasing it because he thought it was too "awful" (scary, upsetting, etc) but I really don't think so. It's a good book, but it wasn't scary at all.

Or it could be I'm too jaded, who knows.

I would say what the connection is, but it's a spoiler (from the book Insomnia) so I don't know if I should open my yap or not. If people don't mind I'll say it. It's nothing huge, but kind of "funny" in a way. It has to do with Gage's death.
