I was thinking. There's the Salma Hayek thread. Then there's Ewan McGregor. And there's even one for both Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. But non for Joaquin Phoenix. So, being the big fan i am, i've decide to make one.

He's sexy, you have to admit it! haha. so what do you all think of him? I think he's a great actor. Exotic looking. Interesting roles (pornographic endorser to King during Ancient Roman Times). He's fearful and unique and good looking.

I loved him in Quills. An Awesome Movie. He wasnt too bad in To Die For either. hehe.

What do you all think?

I think he's handsome in a very odd way. Not at all like River...but, in his own way, not half bad.

http://www.kinoweb.de/film2001/Quills/pix/qu7.jpg

He really made Gladiator for me, I thought he was incredible and overstated which was perfect for the role. I must admit, I still picture him as little Leaf Phoenix...but...I'm getting over it. He's a solid actor with a good future.

Too bad he'll be overlooked come "golden-statue-time" for Signs. He gave the performance of his career.

Joaquin Phoenix is one of my favorite actors. He's talented and good looking. I really liked his performance in Gladiator.

Joaquin was awesome in Signs! (Runs & Camps Out Infront of Video Store) It seems like yesterday he was "Leaf" when he did Parenthood. Joaquin defintely does have a solid future if he chooses great roles like Gladiator & Quills...

I've always admired Joaquin's acting ability, not only in "Quills" and "Gladiator" but in some B-movies he did, such as "Clay Pigeons" and "Return to Paradise".

Acting talent seems to run in his family. It makes me wonder what his brother Phoenix might have achieved if he hadn't died at such a young age.

I used to love him, but for some reason he just annoys me now. The more I think about, he hasn't really had that many good performances at all.....in fact, I disliked most of them. River Phoenix is FAR more talented.

Wow, that's a lot of praise for the guy. Did anyone see him when he appeared on The Tonight Show back when he was promoting Gladiator? He came on completely, falling down, stinking drunk! And this wasn't a good job of acting either, he was sweating and slurring every word and practically drooling. It had to be the stupidest thing I've ever seen a guest on the show do. What was funny was afterwards, no one talked about it, not even in the gossip columns. Leno still talks about it to this day but doesn't say his name.

He's been fine in a few movies, but whatever. For me, he's fallen into the same pit as Jeremy Davies from Saving Private Ryan. After his performance in Gladiator, I'll hate him forever.

Great actor, no doubt there. He was fantastic in both GLADIATOR and SIGNS, and better than good in all his other movies. Great guy too, I hear.

Everything I've seen the guy in he's been great...8MM, GLADIATOR, TO DIE FOR & SIGNS

Playing different roles and showing versitality is a hallmark of a talented actor. I really hated him (not his performance) in Gladiator and that in itself is a good thing.

Like one of my favourites Don Cheadle he is very under rated.

I just gotta ask...erm, why?? Granted he's not on a par with Jonathan Harris or our own homegrown boozer Russell Crowe, but I thought he was pretty good in the role of the usurping, patricidal young Emperor.

I wouldn't shag him, but I'll acknowledge the dude's got some acting chops.

You misunderstood, sugar. Sorry! I meant that he played his part too well. I hated his character so much, that I can't separate them. Same with Jeremy Davies in Saving Private Ryan.

Hating an actor for playing a character in a movie seems a little on the harsh side...no?

I think he's a good actor, but I don't look at him as a sex symbol or a hunk. He is too creepy looking for my taste.

I am partial to his brother River, one of the most talented, beautiful, sweet-natured men ever to grace Hollywood. Damn that addiction.

Good work in the otherwise rancid 8 mm. Also excellent in Gladiator and Quills. He has a Tim Roth-like ability to invest even the rottenest characters with some humanity and pathos.

Has my favorite line in Quills: "It's hardly even a proper novel at all, what with the repeated use of words like 'nipple' and...'pikestaff'..." :D

Oh, gotcha [Feyd smacks her head for being so dumb]. You're right, though...he had that part down pat. Even his accent was convincing, and our Russ has nothing but great things to say about working with him on that shoot.

If you want to see him play a total innocent thrust into a world of troubles, watch "Clay Pigeons". He rocked in that film.

That first pic is awesome. Never seen anything like it.

but I like him. He's a good actor and i can't think of anyone that acts, or looks like him which makes him unique. And that's always a good characteristic to have while acting.

I also have oodles of fun saying his name. "Wah-keen"...that's just too wonderful. One feels as though one could disappear into the night...."she turned to him, and he said 'wah-keen'...and with this...he was off...."

Ah, the wonderful "nipple and pikestaff" quote. Classic.

I first noticed Joaquin in 8mm- and he was probably the best thing in a bloody awful film. That and the leather trousers he wore. Hmm. You could tell what religion he was, for Christ's sake!

So, after my viewing of the Film That Killed Nicolas Cage's Film Career, I decided to do some backcataloguing, coming up with various beauties such as To Die For, Return To Paradise and Clay Pigeons. And them Mr Phoenix hit the big time in Gladiator, and suddenly, he was the pretty boy to Russell Crowe's sweaty testosterone.

But my favourite Joaquin Moment ever has to be his role in Quills. Jesus Christ, I think it's because I was educated to be a good Catholic girl, and I could never remember priests being as sexy as that, ahem. It was just the angst and the longing and the tortured look he had going on...and the fact that he had sexual chemistry with absolutely bloody everyone in that film...even a naked Geoffrey Rush...

..and yes, frankly I am disturbed by that. ;)

Don't be. Geoffrey Rush has a big following down here, and everyone I've spoken to says universally that it was the best scene in the film. (But, that's Aussies for you...always supporting the local talent.)

What I've always been curious about is...what's up with his upper lip? He has a noticeable indentation just to the left of his lip cleft. Is that a scar, or a natural facial shape? Anyone know??

It's called a harelip. Usually from surgery when they are youngsters to repair a cleft palate.

FeydRautha, I completely agree. Both actors perfected that scene. I suppose it's a testament to both their talents that they can generate a spark when they seem the unlikeliest of couples. And despite scorching my retinas with his blatant full frontal nudity, Rush is one of the best actors out there. I'm anticipating Lantana's DVD release over here.

Now, the Harelipgate debate. If you ask me, Joaquin does have a harelip scar. It's a very recognisable one, just the line above the lip where the upper lip was 'made.' Think Manhunter and Red Dragon if you're having trouble.

In an interview, Joaquin mentioned that his Mother told him that when she was pregnant with him, she felt a kick, and that the scar was a result of a sign from God, and that he was born with the scar.

Look, Mrs Phoenix, there is nothing wrong with having a harelip. Poor misguided Joaquin!

i think the harelip's kinda sexy. it defines him as a person sorta. heh. oh yes he was wonderful in quills. i cant wait for his upcoming films. wahoo!

wahkeen haha wahkeen. i could definitely get used to that. haha.

He said in interviews at the time of the film's release, that that was his tribute to DeSade: inflicing his body on the audience like that was an act of Sadism :D

I have to agree that he made Gladiator, for me. I expected Russell Crowe to be good but I didnt expect Jauquin to blow me away like he did. I loved how unpredictable his character was and how fun it was to hate him. I also loved the comic relief he lent to Signs and his performance in Return to Paradis was incredible as well.

As for Gladiator, I probably wouldnt have liked it as much as I did had it not been for Phoenix. I really didnt like Ridley Scott's direction. He is treading his brother's footsteps well and I've actually grown to like him more, I think.
