I thought at the end of The Matrix he actually died. But in the trailer you see him again! What the hell is going on!!???

To answer you question Phatmaster2k3,
Agent Brown and Agent Jones have cloned Agent Smith to make him better and faster, but not as fast as Neo. Thus, he's in the sequels.

As much as I enjoyed Agent Smith, I still think he should have died in the first movie, and replaced by an even better agent in this one. I suppose the Twins are a sufficient upgrade in resistance to Neo.

Maybe I completely misinterpreted the film (It's been so long since I last saw it, I probably did), but, personally, what I'm wondering is: how could Agent Smith possibly die?
He's like a template. A program. And can be overwritten onto any person in the Matrix at any time (obviously not counting those there of our own volition and not due to the system's will; I. E Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, etc.).
How can a computer program die (especially in the Matrix's world; where the computer reigns supreme)? Once he's defeated...the Matrix would write him over someone else and begin the program again...right?
Maybe I just missed or forgot something.

I agree...Even if Neo had destroyed the initial template used to make Agent Smith, why could the machines re-write the program, or improve it but keeping the same covering. I'm sure there would have been a back up.
Also, as a viewer...I think a sequel is easier to enjoy if you return to the same heroes facing the same enemies <a la Star Wars with Darth Vader or Superman with Lex Luther or Rocky and Apollo Creed> instead of having to completely re-introduce new enemies <Like Rocky and Clubber Lang>

The agents will never cease to exsist until The Matrix is destroyed.

The agents are programs correct? well, if you destroy a program, you can always just make another. It's not like he's human and can't come back. they can make the same agent and make him more advanced, quicker, etc.

I think Smith returning for the sequels is awesome! Especially considering what they've made his character...
*****MAY BE SPOILERS FOR THE SEQUELS*****
Agent Smith's lone goal and purpose is killing Neo, plus they are tons of Smith's cloned into The Matrix. This sounds freaking awesome!

I personally am glad that they're bringing back Smith because he was one of the best things about the Matrix.

Yes, the program WAS essentially rewritten. In the sequels, Agent Smith is being refered to as Agent Smith 2.0. Pretty Smart, Huh... lol
