This is my absolute favorite movie of all time. IMO, it's the best modern vampire movie. In a way, this movie's like a modern retelling of Dracula...kinda. Jerry Dandrige is one of the coolest vampires around. The special effects are neat for it's time, too. I like the Evil Ed wolf, the Dandrige bat, and the decomposition of Billy Cole. Roddy McDowall gives a great performance as Peter Vincent.

Fright Night is definately in a class all by itself.
Forget Blade. Forget Buffy. Forget James Woods or George Clooney.
Peter Vincent will whoop ALL their asses!

"Welcome to Fright Night...for real."
The best vampire movie <yes, even better than the Lost Boys>. All around solid in every category <acting, directing, fx, etc...>. Stephen Jeffories <sp?> was excellent, but i think his more recent films are better http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif <if you don't get it look up his name on imdb and begin the laughter!>

Give me a thumbs up here, has to be rated among the best vampire flicks ever. One thing I always wondered tho, is what the heck Dandridge's assistant was ???

Oh Billy Cole. He was a ghoul. But not one of those flesh-eating ghouls.

Yeah, Billy was Jerry's day-watcher. Dandridge probably gave him enough of his blood in order to make him somewhat immortal. (ergo he survived the bullets) But he wasn't a vamp so he could still operate in the daytime. (Which actually makes him cooler than Jerry.)
My favorite scenes: The archival footage of one of Peter Vincent's movies where he's holding the stake backwards and the apples that drop down out of the sky seemingly from nowhere.

Yeah !! it was a very cool movie but I prefer The Lost Boys which was more stylish and more violent.

I was slightly let down by Fright Night. All of the chatter about it being one of the best vampire films of all time had me hyped beyond belief. I suppose I was bound to be disenchanted with it on some level. Evil Ed was just terribly annoying. I could barely stomach his incessant, high-pitched squeak of a voice. Amanda Bearse rubbed me the wrong way as well. She wasn't exactly likeable and I couldn't imagine having her as my girlfriend. Poor Charlie can't even watch the news without having his ass chewed out. My biggest gripe with the film is the extended period of no one believing Charlie's tale of vampirism. Whenever this happens in any film, I get agitated. We spend an hour watching the main character try to prove a point to those cynical minds around him who all think he's delusional. The viewer knows for a fact that he isn't just seeing things. I don't appreciate situational irony such as this. To me, it comes off as a waste of time. But I've complained long enough. I did enjoy this flick to some extent. For one, I liked how all of the clichés that go with the public's collective image of Dracula are kept in tact. By playing by the rules, it feels fresh. It's a nice throwback to the Lugosi era of crosses, garlic, bats, and coffins. Of course, the wolf scene was delicious. It's hard to steer off course with werewolves and vampires in the same package. Billy Cole's meltdown was fun, but his character didn't seem entirely useful. It felt like he was just there for that particular scene.
Despite being somewhat disappointed with Fright Night, I can't say that I was completely appalled by it. I don't think I'll be checking out the sequel anytime soon, though.
My rating-3/5

But, if everyone instantly believed that Charley saw a vampire, it would be stupid. This movie plays like real life, because who would believe that a vampire was in the neighborhood.

That's where Charlie's annoying traits come into play. He cries "vampire!" and expects people to take him seriously. That whole aspect of the film left a bad taste in my mouth.

What exactly is a ghoul?
ominous_oat
05-12-2002, 11:31 AM
A ghoul is a creature that went around robbing graves and eating the flesh of the dead. Zombies were based on this idea. Note how they call the zombies "ghouls" in Night of the Living Dead.

The scene with the night club is a fabulous set piece, because it works better than it should. Amy comes off as slightly whiny throughout, though.

You mean you didnt like William Ragsdale performance as Charlie Brewster? I think he did a really good job, specially in that scene where Jerry calls him over the phone and he says while looking from window on the house next door..."I can see you"..and Charlie gives that look of complete terror in every cell of his body. That is good acting in my book. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I hated his performance. Never once did he strike me as being scared and I always knew how this movie was going to turn out. I'm not saying it was a bad movie, but I don't think it's great either. When it comes to vampires I'd much rather watch The Lost Boys or even Lifeforce.

Granted Lost Boys and Lifeforce are great. Two of the coolest vamp movies..But about Ragsdale performance...I still say he acted preatty scared through out the movie, his acting WAS convincing, for example in that scene I mentioned earlier, if thats not scared what is man, I could swear he was sweating cold sweat for real in that scene...as to you knowing the outcome of the film who doesnt know how a vampire films gonna end? The bad guy always gets it at the end dude thats plain and simple. But thats your opinion and I respect it..there are some actors I cant stand too, not that they are bad or anything but some I just dont like. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Granted, in most vamp films you do know the bad guy is going to get it in the end. But you don't always know who's going to make it and who's not. And I don't particulary dislike Ragsdale I just didn't find him very convincing.

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS****
Ok, I just saw this last night and I loved it. Only a few complaints though...I think it would've been better with out the special effect monsters in the end(Dandrigde bat, Evil Ed turning back to human) and on occasion the 80's soundtrack irritated me.
All in all, very enjoyable movie, with Chris Sarandon being the coolest vampire ever.

Chris Sarandon is still a smokin' hot babe to me. He was on JUDGING AMY the other night.
Billy Cole could have eaten up Charlie for lunch, had he the chance.
Chris is soooooo straight. He was married to Susuan Sarandon in the 70's, and she took his name after they divorced.

I read somewhere that Geoffreys thought the Evil Ed role was too small for the sequel so he turned it down to do 976-EVIL. Damn, why couldn't Robert Englund do that movie at a different time. I also read that Jerry Dandrige was supposed to be resurrected, but that plan never went through. Louie, the werewolf was kinda cool.

That is a tragedy, Klownzilla.
I wish I were there to deflate Geoffrey's ego when he agreed to 976-Evil.
Louie the werewolf was cute in a cartoonish way, but then again no one can duplicate the powerhouse of Dandridge, Billy Cole, and Evil Ed.

Im thinking of possesion. I dont wanna spoil it but I was thinking of this...and bringing Evil Ed back defenetly since we KNOw that he didnt die in the first one...come on Klownzilla add a little something dude, but make it good. Dont write like really fast without reading what has happened before in the story (this has happened a lot in other story threads) and try not to much to Rush the story, you know let it take a normal pace, like a movie. Thats because in the last few seconds of the film theres a scene were we look once again out of Charlies room and we see two red eyes glow in the dark and then we hear the words:
"Your so cool Brewster!" and an evil giggle, and as all fright night fans know that laugh and that phrase can only be made by the evil one himself: Evil Ed. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Peter Vincent removed the stake from Evil Ed's heart, which is a big No-No in vampire movies. I'm pretty sure Ed's heart started to regenerate after the stake was removed.

Vincent didnt kill evil Ed. The stake didnt go through his heart. Ed just had to go through oodles of pain and then pretty much passed out and looked dead. Vampires can become human again if the lead vampire is killed before the sun comes up the next day or some rule along those lines.

I did some figuring a few weeks ago and it made sense. I can't remember my exact thoughs, but since the stake already penetrated Evil's chest and it was removed, then he would stay a vampire despite the death of Dandrige.

I asked myself the same question about Evil Ed, if Jerry died then he should have gone back to being a human but my guess is that the head vampire wasnt Jerry Dandrige. I think that this is the only possibility. Whatcha guys think? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Jerry had to be the head vamp because Amy wouldn't have returned to normal after Jerry get fried.

Your right but thats the only rational explanation I can find. I mean maybe theres a vampire who is more powerful and older than dandrige and THATs the real head vampire...I dont know its all very confusing..OH NO Ive GONE CROSSEYED!.. I mean why else would Evil still be a vamp? You gotta admit...obviously this is the question with that needs an answer.. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
BTW Lady S, cool new character you introduced! Mrs Claire Elwood, the reporter..cool..lets see what happens now. Should be interestin. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

No, no, there's no vampire that's older than Dandrige who cause that mess! That's uh...er...blasphemous. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

LOL, heh, your right. But still the question remains in my head, why if Dandrige died, is Evil Ed still a vampire at the end of part one?

He's a "special" vampire I guess. I guess that's why he was able to shapeshift into a wolf so soon after being a vampire for just a few hours. Usually, shapeshifting for vampires takes years of experience.

I just read in an old Fangoria article than the Evil Ed character was set to come back for part 2, but the actor Stephen Geoffreys said no because "of the flimsiness of his character." He said that they were just "bringing me in there like they felt obliged to bring Evil Ed into a scene, and not for any concrete reason." So instead, Geoffreys decided to star in 976-Evil. Just a little tidbit.
Anyway, Fright Night is a great vampire film. Roddy McDowall was wonderful and a hoot to watch. Just hilarious. William Ragsdale is good as Charlie Brewster, the effects are neat, and the last 15 minutes or so were really exciting.

I bet Geoffreys wanted to do 976-Evil just because he got the lead. Damn. Too bad he wasn't offered some other small part in that movie which would make him do Fright Night Part 2.

Does anybody else wonder how they got Amanda Beares'es mouth so big in this scene? It just sort of like defies logic to me.. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have this far out theory about Louie that he's actually the Beast of Gevaudan from France. It's because one of the encounters with the beast depicted it as a biped, wolf-like creature with a long, pig-like nose. That was exactly what Louie's final form looked like. I'm guessing that he was a shapeshifter werewolf since he was able to transform at will. And King Louie XV ordered the Beast's killing.

Louie was a really menacing character...I allways thought it was creepy how he just kept following Charlies girlfriend everywhere...he was like so persistent. And at the bowling alley when he squishes all that blood from that dead body and then drinks it from a glass...cool. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Hey Steveo ill be doing the prequel soon..
