If you had to pick between these two amazing lyricists as your favorite who would you pick?

I have to go with Tommy but its a hard choice.

Mr. Leonard "Danish vibrator, women dancing on polka dots and cold razor blades" Cohen.

Maybe its my Canadian pride. Plus Cohen helped me when my father passed away by providing me an outlet for my emotions.

Cohen gets the nod. If he'd never written anything but Everybody Knows, he'd still be in the Hall of Fame.

yeah.. imagine getting beaten up by an old jewish/monk-poet-nymphomaniac?!

That'd drive anyone to drink...

I just pictured Cohen head butting some one ala tarantino style.

Is he still jewish? I thought he become more along the lines of buddhist near the end of his stay on Mt baldy. Hmm

Definitely Cohen

Cohen still adheres to his Jewish background, he even lives in Montreal.
His stay at Mt. Baldy near the end had him helping his master Roshi. He was his cook, chauffeur.

I wish I'd seen Cohen in the 1970's, because I'd love to be one of the lovely ladies picked to be a one night stand with his ethearal goodness.

Tom is getting his ass kicked. How sad.

Did you guys know Cohen was on an ep of MIAMI VICE as a French Canadian CIA agent?

I heard about the miami vice role but I never got to see it with my own eyes. There is a dvd out called Ladies and gentlmen Mr. Cohen. I'm sure its good but haven't had the chance to see it yet. Has anyone seen it yet? If so whats it like?

bowieee,

On the MV ep, he gets to speak French! Okay, My love of bilingual/sex addict/ monks is coming out.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LEONARD COHEN is a portrait of young Cohen. Its not very interesting for non-fans, but its a great show of what Cohen is like amongst poeple, by himself. The best part is when Cohen is in the Montreal park. His affinity for the language is touching.

He comes off as a pretentious ass sometimes, but he was younger and not as wise as he is now.
It really is up to you whether or not you like it. If you love Cohen, his comments are funny, sometimes dark. Worth it for fans.

Thanks Lady Summerisle,

I keep eying it over at amazon.com but never add it to my shopping cart. I'm just curious to see video footage of the man speak. To see how he carries himself.

Miami Vice needs to start getting rerun down here so I can see it.

LEONARD COHEN... though it's pretty close. As measured by their most recent records, Waits would be my choice.

But Cohen's THE FUTURE is unrivaled yet. On the one hand, it really gives me the shivers, scares me... and it's so beautiful at the same time. I don't like all of Cohen's works... but this one truly is wonderful.

Leonard Cohen, on the strength of First We'll Take Manhattan...

A brilliantly morbid, gorgeous, decadent ditty.

Leonard has the edge for me...I'm not familiar enough with Mr Waits.

Mr Cohen can be witty, morose, exultant, dark, decadent...and hugely captivating. Beautiful music and a bloody intriguing geezer.

I'm going with Tom Waits since I haven't heard Cohen. My cousins played a lot of Tom Waits over Christmas & I loved it.

I'm already on record above as adoring Everybody Knows. Catch Exotica and see how much it adds to the scene it's played in. Catch Pump Up The Volume and hear Concrete Blonde's brilliant cover version. (Go pick up their Recollection CD for it, and you'll thank me.)

I also love all the songs Cohen did for Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller. They were a perfect match.

That's like saying which is better, cheescake or creme' brulee'! It's apples and oranges, there's NO WAY to choose. I absolutely stand by that. I will not choose between these two geniuses. :D

Tom Waits, by far. Bone Machine and Rain Dogs are two of the best albums ever released by a singer/songwriter.

Add another for Lenny C. Like many others, Everybody Knows will always be a favorite of mine.
