Here are some of them according to me, these guys have always ( almost always ) been honest and don't take the audience for crap.

John Carpenter ( sometimes he directed some movies for big companies but he was disapointed )
Some of his characters are really the mirror of big John :
Snake Plisken, Macready, Demolition Williams.
He has never denied he was inspired by the western genre ( Hawk ) and u can see that in Vampires, Assault, Fog, others ...
David Lynch, of course 'cause you recognise his films within the first minute, he always work with his composer Badalamanti, he writes his own screenplays and his films are always weird.
Dario Argento is also a real author and he's one of my favorite director.
He's a writer, producer and " actor " ( he uses his own hands for the murders - scenes ) the way he films the murders is very stylish and always efficient.
He is a big fan of the Goblins, too.
Even the films he produced have his touch :
Demons 1, 2 , The Sect, others ...
Do u know other horror directors who are real authors ?

David Cronenberg is my favorite director. Much has been said about his obsession with disease and infection ("Shivers," "The Fly," "Rabid," to a certain extent "Videodrome") but seriously, his movies are more about the corruption of false points-of-view than physical disease. That is the main theme in his movies ("Dead Ringers," "Naked Lunch," "M. Butterfly" ... for the love of providence "M. Butterfly" ... "eXistenZ"). Prove me wrong. A faulty world-view is the worst disease mankind can suffer. That is Cronenberg, and that is why he is my favorite director.

Oh, was I raving? Please excuse me. I'm mad.
