Ok, I've tried to go for 3 contrasting selections this week...I just hope you enjoy 'em.
This is Hardcore - Pulp
An epic live track. Not my favourite Pulp tune but it's a perfect title-track and it really does set the tone for the rest of the album.
Don't Mug Yourself - The Streets
I thought I'd try this out, we haven't really listened to anything quite like it...and they're also fairly new. Mike Skinner is being hailed as the Cockney Eminem.
Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man - Gram Parsons
I just love the story-telling aspect of the song...and the rather beautiful lyrics. Country music is always a hard one to sell, this could possibly spark a few contrasting views.
So get downloading people...and have a good one!!!

Damn You Bad cover Version...
That streets song is going to be stuck in my head all night.
Well on to the reviews.
Pulp: This is Hardcore
Nice live track. The horns tooting in the background added alot to the song. A flowing romantic song with a rockers heart and a poetic soul. (I thought I would add extra cheese to that last sentence) but seriously this song is well made. In the immortal words of the fonz.... *puts out two thumbs* Ayyyyyyye :)
The Streets: Don't Mug Yourself
This ditty is too infectious for its own good. This guy is really charming even when saying fuck about 80 times in a row. Plus the words greasy spoon cafeteria can't help but make any song sound good. You can tell he is having fun with it and it gives the song a great vibe.
Grahm Parsons: Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man
Bad Cover you seldom have led me wrong but this song felt like I jumped into a pool full of razor blades and lemon juice. I like some country but "Twangy" country is near torture for my ears. Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying its not good, its just not my cup of coffee.
So to break it down:
This is HardCore: A-
Don't Mug Yourself: A
Twangy Country Song: Phooey
:p

Awww thanking you for participating Bowieee. In response to your comments...
This is Hardcore - Its just a winner of a tune...the horns are fab, the "poetic soul" gets me, and it's just beautifully structured. I'm glad you enjoyed, and your description is blinding!
Don't Mug Yourself - Trust me, you'll be singin' "'Old it daahn boy, yer 'ed's gettin' blurred..." for the next week. It's far too catchy, as is everything else on the bloody album!
Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man - See now I knew "twangy country" would get some people going...;). I just had to go with it...for the sake of variety. Now I can't help but luuuurve Mr Parson's voice...and that chorus sells it for me. But of course, It IS country when all is said and done. I apologise profusely Bowieee. I still like it mind (as sad as that may be) and it's just a wee bit dark IMO...not quite right if you know what I mean.

The Streets - Don't Mug Yourself
LOL!! what a funny song! funny stuff really, kind of a English/Irish rap, I couldn't make out some of the lyrics but I understand it's about some girl..lol, quick song, but really something interesting
Joan Baez - Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man
Hmm...sorry I'm not a country music fan here, so I have not much to say about this...I don't like it Sorry.
Sorry couldn't get the other Pulp song...asks for More Source
:(
Please, can I be next week's host? I want people to listen to my stuff too :(

As far as it being dark.... inbetween the awfull twangs all I could pick up was something about him being the leader of the Klu Klux Klan. I really couldn't get past that part due to the overwhelming urge to slit my wrists and end the misery :D
Oh and no apology needed I think Tom Wait's Voice had the same effect on alot of people in my SOTW thread. :)

This is Hardcore-
It was kind of strange, I was actually listening to this right before I came upon this thread. I really enjoy this song, in all of its versions (although I downloaded the one you suggested, of course). Not quite like any other song I've heard, though...very 'different'...which is splendid! Grade: A
Don't Mug Yourself- Oy Vay BCV! People are going to be asking me why I'm saying "greasy spoon cafeteria" all the time! This is going to be in my head alllll evening...I can just picture myself listening to this in my head and then silently muttering "oy oy oy oy"...if not a masterwork, very VERY catchy. How charmed I was by the way he said "fuck" so easily. ;) Grade: B+
I'm searching for the last one...good stuff so far!

That's probably all about to change luv...
Put the razor-blades away!
Thanks for your thoughts so far Invincible, Bowieee, Annie!!! Have you tried the Swedish Erotica remix of "This is Hardcore" Annie? It's....interesting to say the least.
Next week's host will be Bowieee. No offence Invincible, but Bowieee posted some pick's last year and didn't receive much feedback. She's been participating in the thread on a regular basis and all...I'm sure if you stick around your turn will come very soon...;)

I really like The Streets "Don't Mug Yourself" its just so true...well in my experience anyway. If you like that try an artist called MC Pitman, although he slags off Mike Skinner for being a brummie with a mockney accent in one of his hilarious tunes.
Pulp - "This Is Hardcore" is a weird tune, I'm sorry don't chastise me for this but I didn't really like it...sorry. The only Pulp song I liked was "Disco 2000". Don't get me wrong on reflection its not bad just not my cup of tea.
I couldn't find the other one, I'll look for it and post my review.
On a side note, for songs of the week do you have to take it in turns? I have a few I loved last year that I'd like opinions on? Or is it who gets their first?

This is Hardcore - Pulp
i like this song really epic loads of scope and interesting things going on,bit downbeat compared to there beigger hits but a really good tune, with touches of jazz and operatic emotion, jarvis at his showboating best.
Don't Mug Yourself - The Streets
i really did not like this very mockney, smiley culture type rap, definatly not my thing, although i do really like eminem this did nothing for me except slightly annoy,if this is the future of british music then i shall be buying less music than usual next year.sorry bcv but a thanx for picking it because i have read loads about him so was going to risk buying the cd,i won't bother now.
Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man - Gram Parsons
its taking an age to download keeps going on and off so will post reveiw later, had a bit of a sneaky peak at where it is so far and i like what i hear so far

Ta very much for your thoughts Bullet Tooth...
"Disco 2000" has to be one of my most hated PULP songs...;) alongside that rather cringable "Mis-shapes"...It just goes to show ya doesn't it! I still think that "Common People" is a cracker of a tune mind...Superb!!!
We don't exactly take it in turns, we just nominate a new schmore each week. If ya stick around mate I'm sure you'll be up soon enough...
Thanks again!

Okay, I'm downloading them as we speak, as well as Annie's picks last week. I'll be reviewing both as soon as I can, a bit late but I'm here...Had some computer trouble that delayed me but now I got my Kazaa back, so I'm back in business...if anyone cares.

Bowieee, are you alright taking next week's picks on??? You can delegate but I thought since you've been contributing on a weekly basis and all.
It's nice to see we have a few newcomer's also. Hopefully there will be a bit more variety in the next few weeks...

Hey...I'm glad you liked it Calf!
I knew this one would cause a wee bit of difference in opinion but I truly believe that Gram is a great country singer.
Mike Skinner (The Streets) isn't for everyone either...but thats what this thread is all about. I didn't want to play it safe and stick 3 MOR tunes on...I thought I'd aim for a bit of variety.
Thanks for listening! Jesus, I sound like a broken record but it's nice to have people taking part...;)

Good choices BCV.
Pulp - This Is Hardcore
I love Pulp. Ever since I heard Razzamatazz then got a hold of "His 'n Hers" i've been a huge fan of Jarvis' twisted little vignettes. This Is Hardcore is one of his finest and darkest songs. Lyrically sordid and musically meandering it serves as a constant reminder of Pulps ability to comment on the darker side of relationships through their songs. All that and it's catchy as fuck too. Nice one BCV. 4.5/5
The Streets - Don't Mug Yourself
Bought The Streets album as a result of all the good vibes it had been getting from critics. I was not led astray by the reviews. It's one of the most intelligent and goddamn addictive albums i've bought in recent years. I'm not even a huge fan of UK Garage (although calling The Streets UK Garage is a bit like saying that Van Gogh could paint a bit). Don't Mug Yourself isn't my favorite track (that accolade would go to either Weak Become Heros or Stay Positive). It is a corker of a track though with some brilliant lyrics. A great song from a stunning album. 4.5/5
I'll get back to you with regards to the Gram Parsons track. I think i'll like it. I recently bought his GP & Grevious Angel albums and they are truly wonderful. I'll get back to you after I download it. Cheers.

I'll take the position. I had a hell of a time weaning down my choices for my last SOTW thread so this time I can let the ones who got benched come up to bat. Thanks Bad Cover :)

Here we go...
The Streets - Don't Mug Yourself
This was the first song by this group I've ever heard. Not really my kind of music, so I'm afraid it might also be the last. It did have a nice feel-good ring to it, but I never could really get into this one.
Pulp - This is Hardcore
This is probably my favorite of the few Pulp songs I've heard thus far. This Cocker chap has a nice voice, and the whole song clicks together real nice. I'm pleased with this.
No luck with the twangy-song, but I probably wouldn't have liked it anyways ;)

Thanks to all the schmoes who participated in the SOTW thread...
A special thankyou to all the "newcomers"...Stick around people!!!
I'm glad we had a wee bit of a mixed reaction this week, it spiced things up a little...
Bowieee, I recommend "Original Pirate Material" (The Streets), it's a fun album...and the best UK garage/rap about at the moment IMO. You should try downloading "The Irony of it all" and "Geezer's need Excitement"...If you like them...then go for it!!!
Ta very much all...and I'm off to download Bowieee's selections!!!
