KILLER TONGUE (1996)
First off to say Killer Tongue is a B movie would be quite an understatement. It might actually give Troma a run for its money in a couple of scenes. It is very reminiscent of cult movies like Liquid Sky. Plot wise the movie depicts a Bonnie and Clyde type couple who terrorize the desert landscape. After her boyfriend lands in a convict camp run by none other then Freddy Krueger himself Robert England, Candi (Mindy Clarke) and her green tinted poodles lay low by entering a nunnery disguised as a gas station. Yes there are nuns pumping gas. After taking her dogs to a secluded house they all get infected by an alien parasite that crashes through the window and lands in a bowl of soup. This effect is done with perfect low budget effects as a beam of pink light splashes into the liquid. This subsequently changes Candi’s hair from blonde to black and puts her in a black leather outfit and to top it off a large killer tongue. As for the poodles they turn into cross-dressers straight out of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. After this the movie abandons any plot devices and goes for over the top madness as the tongue goes on a killing spree Wild West style highlighted by a vicious bathtub attack among others, a frighteningly weird dance number, a nun-turned-angel savior, and a giant pink alien shrine. All leading up to a finale in an abandoned church in the middle of the New Mexico desert.
The acting in the movie is over-the-top in all its glory. Every actor seems to be yelling at one another with glee with the exception of Mindy Clarke who gives a great B movie performance and manages to keep a straight face throughout the running time. She also has another self-mutilation scene like in Return of the Living Dead 3. Eugland was hilarious with his wild antics as the Head Warden when he cusses out everyone that gets in his way including Pinhead himself Doug Bradley who is a prison member. If you thought his one-liners were rampant in the latter Nightmare sequels get a hold of this movie. When he goes shirtless with a rag over his head complete with lipstick and a shotgun it could possibly be the most frightening image in the flick. The soundtrack boasts various techno and western tunes complimenting the ongoings of the film. Directing wise Alberto Sciamma fills the picture with frantic pacing and even throws in some tongue point of view shots from inside the mouth low budget style. The screenplay included lines such as – “You had a Mother? I thought you were shot out of a donkey’s ass”. The special effects range from passable to quite good during some of the tongue sequences.
Overall I still don’t know what to think of this flick as it resonates in my brain. I would only recommend it to people who enjoy cult and B movies as it brought a big shitty grin on my face on several occasions. On the negative side the flick does tend to overstay its welcome towards the climax but should please anyone who can appreciate movies like these. Movie snobs stay away!
