View Full Version : And The Most Pretentious Movie Scene Of The Year Award Goes To...
MINORITY REPORT.
I think the most pretentious scene of the year award goes to MINORITY REPORT with the female precog telling Tom Cruise and his wife what would of happened if their son had lived. There's no reason for that scene other then for the audience to feel for the characters. Why would she (the precog) tell them that? It's just torture and it didn't accomplish anything.
What's your guys's? Also, what movie do you think was the most pretentious?

i think the word pretentious is overrated. now think about that one. :)
XXX was pretty prententious. all it tried to do was be cool, and failed miserably.

lol. I have actually been annoyed by its use on these boards, but for this thread I thought it was ayyight. And "xXx" was pretty bad.

LEFT BEHIND II: TRIBULATION FORCE - This one scene where a pilot on the side of good comes face to face with the Antichrist in an airplane wasn't handled with care, IMHO. This man is going up against the most evil individual in the world, the son of Satan himself, and just so we know he's evil, he gets a brief, CGI Halloween mask put on him. Yup, the fear's in me.

Even if that were true, is that really the correct use of the word "pretentious?"
Getting the audience to feel for the characters is hardly unecessary. The point of the scene was to give fill an emotional void for Anderton and his wife over the loss of their child. They could see what it would have been like if he hadn't been taken. She reminds them that they have too much love to forsake their marriage.

My picks would be XXX and Road to Perdition. I agree with XXX about it trying to be cool when it failed miserably

It gave them a sense of closure.

Sorry folks...
The plastic bag sequence in "American Beauty", Tracey Emin has been filming that shite for years...and I just can't abide Tracey Emin. I saw the plastic bag malarkey at the Tate gallery, London in about '98. The only difference was the music, Emin used "The Crystal Ship" by The Doors...everything else (backdrop, camcorder effect, etc) was EXACTLY the same.
I wasn't impressed then...and I certainly wasn't impressed when I saw American Beauty.

And pretty much every scene in Magnolia.
The end shot of Spider-Man where he lands on a flagpole and the american flag is billowing behind him.

Every scene in The Two Towers that tried to pull my emotional strings. All of them in the end failed miserably for me because IMO they tried to hard to be emotional.

So we meet again, Beeblebrox. Pretentious means (the interpreation I get) to try and be really showy or meaningful when it's not necessarry.

Although Gangs Of New York imo felt extremely uncomplete in its narrative and undeveloped characters (with the exception of Bill The Butcher). The most pretentious scene of the year has to be in its final scene with New York City evolving in the background of the two graves. To say that these gangsters helped build present day New York is a little far fetched and also quite an insult.I often get the feeling with Scorsese, although im a huge fan that he often glamorises gangsters. The final scenes of GONY proved me right.Although pretty cool and at times represented as comedians (Joe Pesci is fucking hilarious)these people are the lowest of the low. What about the Italians,Jews and so on?Didnt they help build what is present day New York?

Pretentious means showy or meaningful when it isn't. That scene is not pretentious, and even if it were by YOUR definition, it hardly qualifies as the MOST pretentious of the year.
My vote for the most pretentious scenes would be anything 9-11 related in The 25th Hour.

I hate that word, pretentious. People use it too much. I rarely find things pretentious, especially in movies. Anyway, people are listing American Beauty and Magnolia scenes when this thread is for this year only.

Now what was so bad about that? Just a little harmless quirky movie.
And Beeblebrox, it's just my opinion. I did not think there was a point to that scene in MR other then to show off some dramatic acting. It was only designed to make people cry. I resent that kind of stuff (when it feels forced).
Oh yeah and I don't like the word "pretentious" to much either. I'm not even sure why I used it here. I should have just wrote "The Most Phony Feeling Scene Of The Year" or something.

This is SO bad... (ha ha ha ha)
The most pretentious scene of 2002 was in Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever when two of the characters (I could care less which two they were) are having an emotional moment in front of a giant water tank, at a zoo, with manitees swimming around in the background. Horrible. Horrible.

I thought the script was so fucking bad that it couldn't be redeemed. But the directing style was good. I thought that was a beautifully shot scene. Bad movie though.
