Dogma

What are your top 3 movies of last year? Give reasons.

Mine would have to be:

1. Donnie Darko
2. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
3=. Ocean's 11 and Bourne identity

Ocean's 11 because it was slick, smart and hella cool A. K. A. Stylish

Bourne Identity was for me one of the suprise hits of last year and I was so impressed with Damon. THat performance was up there with his performance's in Good Will Hunting and the Talented Mr. Ripley.

Lord of the Rings: The Two towers because, well, need I say.

(ARAGORN'S HEADBUTT!!!!)

Donnie Darko...what can I say about this film that hasn't been said a thousand times before.
I know that in the states Donnie Darko was 2001 but we didn't get it over here until about September 2002. It really was the best film of 2002.

I wasn't sure if Kissing Jessica Stein is a 2002 movie so i left it out. But if it is then it would be my second favourite 2002 movie.

There are still a bunch more I need to see (Gangs, About Schmidt, One Hour Photo....)

1. Punch Drunk Love - I loved this movie

2. Two Towers- I wont get into the problems that this movie has (Im one of those who have read the books a few too many times), but despite its flaws, it really delivered some jaw dropping scenes like Gandalf falling with the Balrog and anything with Gollum. It is such a treat to see Tolkien's works come alive on the screen. I cant wait until Return of the King.

3. Donnie Darko- I know this movie came out in 2001, but I didnt see it until just a couple of months ago (I dont know why I waited so long). It is definetly one of my favorite movies that I have recently seen. So if Dogma can include it, so can I.

Other Good Flicks According To Me:
Far From Heaven, Insomnia, Adaptation, Red Dragon, The Ring.

Top 3 of 2002:

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
I always tell myself "this is how it felt to live in the seventies witnessing and being part of the whole Star Wars mania". Well that's how I feel about LotR. Sheer perfection comes to mind when describing this film(of course there are flaws to be found but the good overshadows the bad :D) Everything I love about films; the action, intriguing storyline, drama and eye-candy was presented with passion. Truly an ingenious work of film.

Minority Report
Stylish, great screenplay, superior acting, and excellent cast. I loved A.I. and I loved MN even more. Spielberg knows how to make an entertaining movie. One of the best sci-fi movies ever.

Chicago
I had so much fun just watching this gem of a movie. The singing which was excellent btw, the dancing, and just the look of the film was IMHO far more superior then Moulin Rouge. I wouldn't be surprised if this wins couple of Oscars.

Other Favorites includes:

"The Ring" [scared me to death, couldn't sleep for days]
"Signs" [very Hitchockian, one of the best suspense movie, loved the cast, especially the two kids and Joaquin]
"Star Wars Eps. II: AOTC" [I thoroughly enjoyed it though I can't call myself a SW fan. The acting could have been better. Loved the SFX. ]

ThereWolf's top three choices from last year are;

1. Bowling For Columbine- Man, Michael Moore is a genius this documentary was insightful, entertaining, disturbing, and hilarious all at once, let's just hope that the Academy doesn't make the same mistake they made back in 1994 with Hoop Dreams and not even nominate it for Best Documentary!

2. Minority Report- Spielberg's flat out best film since Saving Private Ryan, Raiders Of the Lost Ark and even since Schindler's List. This is what happens when you combine the genius of Spielberg with the writing of Philip K. Dick, a brawny and brilliant thrill ride that never loses it's momentum!

3. The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers- A Masterpiece, there's no other word for this amazing adaptation of Tolkien's much beloved epic classic, with superb performances and great visual effects, LOTR:TTT has the number 3 slot on ThereWolf's top ten list!

Gangs of New York - for being an exciting, involving, thought-provoking, beautiful epic film.

Solaris - for being so slow it actually makes you ponder humanity and wonder what life is all about and what comes later.

Road to Perdition - for being the most visually stupendous film of the last year, for making me relate to its characters, for making me feel, and for making me believe that Tom Hanks can play any role you throw at him.

I don't hire many new release movies so most of the 2002 movies I've seen I saw at the cinema, of which there are only about 30, so there isn't a great deal of choice that I have. But enough of my yakkin', the top 3 are -

1. The Rules of Attraction- This movie was darkly humorous, had great cinematography, a great soundtrack, and great acting. I love movies about younger generations and although this hopefully doesnt describe all of us, it sure is entertaining.

2. Adaptation- I love all of the little jokes with the writing. Nick Cage's best performance.

3. Chicago- Really good musical. I was surprised by some of the singing abilities of the actors.

I saw a helluva lot of films at the cinema in 2002 and I liked a lot on offer, but 3 of the films that were the better on offer.

The Ring (10/10)
Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson

A creeper that didn't have to rely on gore to make it a scary film. This was certainly one of the creepiest films I have ever seen and Watts took her simple role and elevated it to her own.

The Bourne Identity (9/10)
Matt Damon and Franka Potente

A surprising film that was much better than expected. It brought out impressive and unexpectedly strong performances from Potente and, particularly, Damon.

Garage Days (9/10)
Pia Miranda and Kick Curry

A fantastic and lively Aussie romp set to the rock music scene. Crow Director Alex Proyas doesn't disappoint on a visual level, with comparisons to The Rules Of Attraction coming to mind, and the performances are especially enjoyable. XXX baddie Martin Csokas was particularly memorable as a sleazy band manager, the blowjob scene was a hoot. Maybe will be more appreciated by the Aussie audiences.

Other hot contenders:
The Cat's Meow (9/10)
Ocean's Eleven (9/10)
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (9/10)
Life As A House (9/10)
