Anyone like this band? Personally I rate their Siamese Dream album higher than Nirvana's Nevermind (and I do rate Nevermind highly). From their magnificent debut album Gish right up until the internet only release of their final album Machina II: The Friends And Enemies Of Modern Music I think they were responsible for a fantastic body of work. Anyone else a fan?

This goes back to a conversation in High Fidelity. "Can a band be punished for their latter day sins?" In my opinion, if Billy Corgan dies after Mellon Collie than they go down as one of the best rock bands in the last 30 years.
Personally, I hate Nirvana, so obviously think they are better. I think the Pumpkins made some amazing albums:
Mellon Collie
Siamese Dream
some great ones:
Gish
Pieces Iscariot
and some...other ones:
Machina
Adore
I think they were a great band...but lost some steam in their final days. Hopefully, judging on what I've heard, Corgan looks like he's on the right track with Zwan.

in Guitar Magazine, Corgan was quoted (caught!) saying:
"If Nirvana were the Beatles of the nineties, then we were the Doors."
eh hem. yep.
I was a huge fan back in the day.. Kinda lost interest after Billy went CRAZY.
Machina was preposterous. There is absolutely NO excuse for it. Adore, on the other hand, I fucking.....adore! Too bad everyone bought the shirt instead of the album.

Machina was indeed preposterous. Bland, pretentious, and uninspired. A few of the tracks are decent, but it would have been better off as an EP. Siamese Dream is astounding. Pisces Iscariot is a hit/miss record (mostly hit). Almost off-topic, but I can't fucking believe what the Dixie Chicks did to "Landslide." The SP cover is sharp, yet simplistic, the key word being SIMPLISTIC. A couple of acoustic guitars and relaxed vocals are all that was necessary.

Pisces is GREAT! I had been listening to pumpkins for YEARS before I even heard about it and when I did get into it, their cover of landslide was the hook.
I never thought I'd see the day when Billy Corgan acknowledged the presece of anyone, let alone Fleetwood Mac!

The Pumpkins early work is grand. My favorites being Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie/Infinite Sadness. Once Jimmy Chamberlain got kicked out and the band started having their differences was when things got worse. Machina was bad, and it was sad to see that they left off with it. Adore is okay, but lack of Chamberlain's absence hurts it.

One of my favorite albums of all time is Melan Collie. The song Tonight Tonight is a total trailer song

There's not an album of theirs I don't like. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is my favorite ; 1979, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Tonight Tonight, Cupid De Locke and the best Fuck You (An Ode To No One)

and loneliness is cleanliness
and cleanliness is godliness

One of my favorite bands. I adore Siamese Dream and Gish both. Pisces Iscariot is a wonderful collection of b-sides (Girl Names Sandoz is awesome) and Meloncollie was a really big bite for them, but still phenomenal (though I think I liked their stuff w/ Butch Vig better). After that, I appreciated their ability to do a different style than they had been and respect totally their option to do that but didnt enjoy listening to it as much. They needed Jimm Chamberlain to have the same quality. Still, one of the better bodies of work for a band, that I've heard.

Whats w/ all the Machina bashing. I love Machina. And I also love Adore. Come to think of it I like all Pumpkin albums. One of the best bands of all time, a billion times better than Cobains incoherent ramblings...
Of course, I do love nirvana too. Unplugged is one of the greatest live albums ever. Period.

Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness is one of the best albums to come out of the nineties and The Pumpkins best work. I also really enjoy Pisces Iscariot. I had this one for a long time and never really 'listened' to it. I just recently put it in and have fell in love with their cover of Landslide.

The Smashing Pumpkins are a great band. Personally they are my third favorite band. (1st is nirvana and 2nd soundgarden) Their early work is definitely their best. Gish is my favorite album of theirs. Siamese Dream would be second and Mellon Collie would be 3rd. If you have not heard Gish, do a favor for yourself and go do that.

Has anybody heard any of Billy Corgan's new band? The name is Zwan, I'm not sure if they've put out an official album yet but I did download a few of their songs and it sounded pretty good from what I have heard.

I agree with what Cemetery Gates and Siren 30 said about Jimmy Chamberlin. He was such an important element in their sound that they suffered after they kicked him out. They bounced back, but unfortunately D'arcy left soon after Jimmy's return. Maybe it wasn't the same for her afterward. She is beautiful, by the way. I
just wanted to interject that JC is one of the most amazing drummers in rock history, and he is one of just a few mainstream players that can pull off single stroke rolls on snare with effortless precision. His style will be emulated for years to come.
