Hey you nine to five-ers....Does this movie represent your crappy office or what???

I think of it all the time because I ALWAYS get shocked on a side door handle. Our fax machine never works and eats paper. A co-worker has a favorite stapler that she has her name on, and is always aware of its whereabouts.

I love this flick!

I love this movie. Although it is slightly depressing. But so much of it reminds me of my daily life.

I get shocked every day (every single fucking day) when I turn on the lights in my office.

Bob Slydell: If you would, would you walk us through a typical day, for you?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah.
Bob Slydell: Great.
Peter Gibbons: Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door--that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh--after that I sorta space out for an hour.
Bob Porter: Da-uh? Space out?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

...yep that sounds about right. In fact I doubt that my boss would really consider typing messages on the JoBlo discussion board to be a very productive use of my time.

ps
As I finished typing that last message out, the boss walked into my office to see what I was up to. Alt-Tab saves the day again!

This movie is hilarious. Right now, well, that is to say, if I can't find my stapler, or if somebody took it, like my kids are always in my office taking stuff, and they never ask me first, then when I need it I can't find it , er, and borrowed it without my permission, well, I'm going to have to Burn my House Down!

I don't think you need to work at an office to identify with it. Working at a convienance store and other boring, frustrating jobs can help you get as much enjoyment as office workers did

Ummm...Yeah, I have to agree with ahhh... Markitzero on this one. Ummm....my boss would also think that this was a ahhh.... bad use of my time. Ok!

I think I'm the king of the Schmoes who post at work. 15 minutes of actual work in a week? That's a generous estimation.

I always laugh just THINKING about the scene where the boss' Porshe bumper gets ripped off by the tow truck in the handicapped spot. It makes me grin ear to ear.

We don't have "preffered parking" here, but if we did it would piss me off royally.

Even as we speak, someone somewhere ACTUALLY thinks I'm doing something productive.

I work in an office, and it's almost the exact same thing.
Things I have done in work:

I had the only working paper hole punch in the WHOLE OFFICE. Then a new guy comes into my section, uses it and doesn't put it back where I hid it so no one would steal it. A week later, it's broken.

I used to eat sunflower seeds to keep me occupied while I was 'studying' language stuff on our internet. The screensaver comes on automatically after 30 minutes... I'd sit there, space out on the same screen eating sunflower seeds. The screensaver would turn on, I'd flick my mouse and continue spacing out until it came on again until lunch.

The damned fax machine doesn't fax to the main place I need to fax items to.

I do something wrong, and 4 different guys get on me for it. But no one wants to actually TALK to me about it, I just hear how all four bosses are flipped out about something that I know that I'm doing correctly, but one of my other bosses asks about it and thinks I'm doing it wrong. Nevermind that he doesn't know what he's talking about. He's just trying to change something that works fine into a more muddled mess of paperwork to make himself look good.

It goes on and on... I love this movie. It's The Truth.

I realize a large (large) number of Schomes love this flick, but for me it was completely dissapointing. Why? Well, for a movie that was supposed to be a comedy, it certainly didn't make me laugh. At all. One giggle during the scene where they destroy the fax machine, other than that I sat through the entire lame scenario in stone-faced silence.

This movie is amazing - and I'm only 15.

I don't even think you really need to have a job. You just have to be able to identify with being forced to spend time with people you would rather not, and having people (parents, bosses, teachers...etc.) having control over you when they are inferior in intelligence.

Great, great flick. The epitome of 90s comedy.

If they have inferior intelligence than you, and you listen to them... how intelligent does that make you, my friend?

Oh, and styates, try to cut back on the "umms..." and "ahhhs....". You are on a message board. You do not need to type out nervous time stallers. It just makes you seem like a complete and utter moron. Thank you.

I'm sure its a reference to the Bill Lumbergh character in the movie. I know you're new and if you haven't read the rules, maybe you should.

Yes, I read the rules. Don't criticize others. I am truly sorry.

Now that you mention it, I see the connection to the movie, and for that I must give a heartfelt and very sincere apology to styates. I realize, bashing someone is not the way to make a popular debut.

I totally have a 'Milton' in my office. The guy is so tense he looks like he will just self destruct at any given time and he's always talking under his breath and approaching people about mundane things that he feels 'should be addressed'. It's hysterical the similarities. Only I dont feel our guy will 'burn down the building'. More likely he'll just drop dead one day. Sad but true.

Hey Milton, what's happening?

This movie owns all!!!:D

"If they have inferior intelligence than you, and you listen to them... how intelligent does that make you, my friend?"

I take it you haven't worked in that many places? I've been smarter then every boss I've had, but it doesn't mean I'd be better at their job. Intelligence isn't everything, and borderline-stupidity often works to your advantage in the corporate world.

Oh yeah, and I think it's a great movie. though I don't like it as much as most people here.. I can totally relate to the central character, as his philosophy after hypnosis is how I am most of the time.

Ummmm... riiiiiiiiiiiight.

I only WISH I had a cool cubicle like in the movies... But NOOO, instead they give me a huge room downstairs, all by myself, where I operate an 867mhz Apple Power Mac with dual, 17 inch displays and I rarely ever see my bosses or co-workers.

You guys think YOU have it bad? Try MY job. I do NOTHING. (Well, okay, that's not entirely true. Today I put together two swivel chairs.)

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I RULE!

Anyway... The movie's funny for it's first half, but I've never been able to be satisfied with it's second half, despite watching it at least 5 times with friends who are laughing their asses off throughout.

I think Annie Hall said it best- it is a slow moving, dark comedy, dealing with having to spend time with people you'd rather not, and have lesser intelligence than yourself. (BTW- I WISH A SCHMOE OUT THERE WOULD TELL MY COMPUTER STUPID ASS HOW TO INSERT A QUOTE!)

Having to spend time with people that bore, annoy and piss you off just sucks. Anyone who's had to do it, and still does to collect a paycheck that goes right out of your hands the second you cash it deseves a medal!
