I usually got a good memory when it comes to horror flicks but somehow the title of this film slipped my mind:

The film is about a boy who got something "buried" in his backyard (a box?)
Then there's some sort of huge hairy monster killing a few people (his parents?)
One thing I remember for sure was a E.T. poster in the boy's room plus I recall the opening scene involving a old gypsy and some weird looking toy monkey and the gypsy's house getting struck by lightning...

It was a color film, very low budget and probably filmed between 1982 (E.T.) - 1984. I've checked imdb.com but couldn't find a thang.

Ugh, this is driving me nuts. Anybody remember this film????

Just a guess, but could it be The Pit? I haven't seen it, but it was a film released in 1981 about a boy who finds monsters in a forest deep in a pit. He uses the monsters to get revenge on those who harass him daily.

Hey, thanks for the bump r&j http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif but never mind. I did some research yesterday cuz I remembered the company that released it on video: vestron. The rest was a piece of cake. The title is: THE DEVIL'S GIFT!!!
Interesting though, I just read it was supposed to be part of an anthology (?) flick called "Merlins Shop of Mystical Wonders".

Aahh, "Merlin's Mystical Shop of Magical Wonders"! One of the last episodes of MST3K, and also one of the funniest.
The flick basically consisted of two short films made for some anthology back in the eighties, which apparently never made to screens anywhere.
Anyways, the flick connected the two stories with new footage (shot in 1996) in which Ernest Borgnine tells his grandson two stories in which two items are stolen from Merlin's mysticzl shop in New York.
The funniest one involves the toy monkey (based on a short story by Stephen King). The original films were bad enough, but then they had to add footage of a goofy-looking Merlin wandering the streets asking people if they'd seen his toy monkey.

The mere fact that this was on MST3K should be a good sign that you shouldn't try digging up this movie. Just stick with the version with Mike and the bots.
