What did you think of this movie? I thought it was extrememly well done, the characters were great, and sme were even up there with the best of the best! Some parts were tedious, and boring, but for the most part I liked it! 9/10.

How can you award the film the pretty high score of 9/11, despite finding parts of it boring and tedious?
Alas, I consider this a well-made, but in interesting and involving characters seriously lacking flick. It's one of Lean's lesser efforts, still beautifully made, but with a unengaging protagonist. Omar Sharif didn't deliver here the way he did in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Julie Christie was good, but Rod Steiger stole everyone's scenes.
But still too long and laborious.

I find many good films have parts that are long and boring. Citzen kane, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, A Clockwork orange, Goodfellas, one flew over the cuckoo's nest ect ect ect. A Movie can't have action all the time.

Citizen Kane and Goodfellas have some slow parts... agreed. But which parts of STAR WARS, JURASSIC PARK and CLOCKWORK ORANGE did you find "long and boring"?
P.S.: I really love DOCTOR ZHIVAGO... I don't think that it's too long because it's a movie of epic scale... And the film's cinematography and score are just amzing.....
P.P.S.: OK, call me a nit-picker, but it's still 'etc' and not 'ect';)

No you misunderstand, I found some parts of A Clockwork Orange and some parts of STAR WARS boring. Jurassic Park, no boring parts.

No, I understood... so let me repeat my question: WHICH parts of these films did you find 'long and boring'?

A Clockwork Orange, some scenes were a bit long, such as some parts where laex is being dragged around, close up,s and crap, but I guess that was to build drama. Star Wars, vitually all of A New Hope, but the last time I saw it, I was like 9 so I'll have to get back to you on that.
A beautiful looking film that left me empty.
******SPOILERS***************
...........
I didnt care for Zhivago. I didnt like the fact that he was cheating on his wife... and then when he gets kidnapped during the war, Lean NEVER goes back to show the struggles of Zhivagos' family. I also thought the ending with the goofy looking heart attack/stroke was LAME. I wouldnt tell anyone to not waste their time with this flick; I just personally couldnt relate or feel sorry for someone who cheats on his wife, and spends the rest of life looking for his mistress.
6/10

Not that this will change your opinion but the reason the film didnt focus on the lives of Zhivago's family after he's kidnapped is that his brother, played by Alex Guiness, is telling the story and he wasnt aware of any of those details. The entire film was a narrative to Zhivago's bastard daughter, if you'll remember. I will agree that I had a hard time sympathizing w/ Yuri when he cheats on his sweet, forgiving wife. Especially since he had such a nice little life there in Yuriatin (sp?). So, I didnt identify w/ his character (or Laura's) either. But I adore Steiger's performance and the war/battle scenes are outstanding. Also the scene where that old woman on the train says "Strelnekov" and you finally see who the infamous leader IS...CHILLS UP MY SPINE. I won't say more about that; you just have to see it. The cinematography is beautiful also. It's definitely one to own, even if the only time you watch it again is to show to someone else. 9/10
