I was thinking about renting this movie and was wanting to get some input on it. Is it good? Would it be good for kids to see or is it aimed more at adults? I'm sure it's good since Steven Spielberg directed it. I know it also received many academy award nominations.

Definitely not a movie for kids.
It is, however, a well made, solidly acted and deeply emotional story. I would highly recommend it, especially for a Spielberg fan.

Go 4 It!!! It sucks that the movie got dissed MAJOR at the Academy Awards! Color Purple is a Great Movie, Segments Will Got Bothersome At Times but hey thats how it was then. And you will be rooting for Whoopi Goldberg All The Way Thru!

The Color Purple IMO is a MASTERPIECE, and like Borderevil said, completely shafted by the Academy.
It is brilliant, moving, beautifully written, performed and filmed.
A+.
Excellant movie! The 3 best films about the black experience are:
Roots
The Color Purple
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman
Steven Spielberg was ROBBED at the Oscars for this film. "Supposed black leaders" like Jesse (wheres the camera) Jackson, pissed and moaned that a JEW CANNOT and SHOULD NOT think they can make a film about the "black experience".... that is until this MASTERPIECE made its debut.... they ALL choked on their fuckin words... and NEVER offered an apology. I contend that if Color Purple doesnt at least choke one up, then they dont have a SOUL. 9/10

I ten times over prefer 'The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman' to 'The Color Purple. I just adored that wonderful performance and only liked the characters in 'The Color Purple'. It was a very good movie, don't get me wrong, but I thought some of the more disturbing scenes were overdone for sensationalism and others went on a little long. 'Autobiography', being made for tv, also had it's flaws but all-around, I found it more interesting.

BOTTOM LINE: The Color Purple was the best movie of 1985.

I've read half the book!
But the movie is very emotional, but at the same time, it's a true classic. It's one of my favorites. Whoopie and Oprah are great. 9/10
happy OUT here

One of my all time favorites, but I will not allow my 12 year old son to see it yet.
It was robbed by Oscar.
I love watching Oprah marching through the field!
The Color Purple was a well-done film with great performances by all.
It $ucked that the dumb Academy didn't give Spielberg a directing nomination for it, &, to add insult to injury, it didn't recieve 1 of the 12 Oscars it was up for.
Then again, that's probably why they gave Spielberg the Thalberg Award 1 year later(which he deserves more than ever today).

Sounds like a good movie, I'm a big Spielberg fan. By the way, what's in the movie that would not be suitable for children?

I was thinking about this movie the other night, and was reminded of something I've always wondered about.
Okay, in the scene that Celie pulls a knife on Mister there are several children seated around the table (I think it was Thanksgiving). Who are these kids? Who do they belong to? Not Celie, Squeak or Sofia. Anyone know?

It is a very good movie, but I don't think "brilliant" applies to it. "Brilliant" is reserved generally for a different situation. THE COLOR PURPLE is a very well made film, strongly acted and written, but not brilliant.

I thought they were Sofia's and because she spent so long in prison, she didn't really recognise them or vice versa. I could be wrong though...
I dont think of myself as a child anymore (more of a young adult perhaps) but I have seen this movie and loved it. It all depends on how mature you are and how you will deal with a film of this nature, age has nothing to do with it IMO.

Hate to be the one to do this but I didn't like it (I'm not saying it's not good). It felt like there was nothing going on

Maybe, but didn't one of them call her "Miss Sofia" at one point? Is that a proper way to address your mother in those days?
How long was she in prison, anyway? Do anyone remember?

Spielberg's most underrated movie. Not a film for small children, I agree, but a deep, emotional and meaningful movie nonetheless. 8.5/10

I too thought The Color Purple was a good film, albeit not a great one. I didn't care for the overboard manipulation, as with the early scene when Celie's sister is literally dragged away from her, kicking and screaming. I didn't get emotionally involved in that scene. Besides, I'm a huge fan of Alice Walker's novel, and while I feel that the film did an admirable job in covering most of the text, I still loved the epic feel of the book more than what Spielberg intended. On the plus side, it contains probably the best dramatic performance from Whoopi Goldberg (and they gave her an Oscar for her buffoonish role in Ghost? Please, she was absolutely stunning here).
This isn't Spielberg's most underrated film; that title would go to Empire of the Sun, or even A.I.

This movie is in one word.. AMAZING.. It gives me chills every time I watch it.. At the end, OMG it was just so.. heart-warming, made me cry. This whole movie this woman has to go through t-total hell, and things finally for once other than when she had her sister with her, start to look up for her.. It just really is a truly special film. Danny Glover acted good, but I hated his character in this. Shug Avery was Celie's escape in a sense.. she finally had someone to pay attention to her, and see what she was about.. and not be so damned selfish. And the part when Netty is dragged away from Celie.. WTF, who could EVER do that to someone? What an asshole. Oprah also was great in this as Sophia, and what happened to her was also sad. This whole movie is sad, sad, sad throughout.. but then it just comes to a point where you cry tears of joy, for Celie.. she definately deserved all the happiness in the world for all of the shit she had to go through. To sum my rambling up.. the movie was amazing, and definately should not be missed.

It's pretty good, but not what I consider one of Spielberg's best. Plus I'm so repulsed by anything Oprah's in, I'll never watch it again. Overall I'd say it's worth seeing, if you don't mind watching the Big O.
