If you like At the Gates, have you heard Grotesque? It's a more blackish death metal band that Tomas (ATG singer) was in before ATG. You can get the Grotesque - In the Embrace of Evil album packaged on the same disc with At the Gates - Gardens of Grief. It's a great buy.

Ya thebloodfeaster i still around, my damn internet keeps screwing up! I've heard about that atg/grotesque spilt, but i haven't seen it around. I work at a independant record store and our distro. sucks for metal, it hard for us to get some stuff (relapse records). I see your into some death metal and black too! Have you listened to exhumed before. (i just got a split 7" with gadjet) both bands are pretty crazy. The inside picture for exumed has one of the guys holding up a severed head and pouring the blood all over him. Where i live up in canada there isn't too many good bands that come through.

Black Sabbath
Fear Factory
System of A Down

I havent' heard that split 7" but I dig Exhumed. They and Impaled are doing a good job of carrying the Carcass torch. I got to see Impaled when they played with Incantation, Averse Sefira, and Nile. That was a pretty badass show.

I like alot of the Canadian metal bands I've heard. Gorguts is in my top 5 death metal bands. Cryptopsy and Annihilator are great to. Quebec seems to be a hotbed for creating great deathmetal!

Fear Factory was still metal imo up through Demanufacture and parts of Obsolete. They got way too nu-metallish for me on Digimortal, but I'll always love Demanufacture.

I actually like System of a Down, they're one of the very few nu-metal acts that stand apart and are enjoyable.

If you like Pantera, be sure to check out Exhordor. That band was a MAJOR influence in Pantera when they changed their sound between Power Metal and Cowboys from Hell. Exhordor - Slaughter In the Vatican is a pretty cool album.

I really did Machine Head. There first two albums are great and I can dig there last two on a different level. They certainly tried to sell out but there is always there first two.

You can never go wrong with Anthrax. I think im the only person in the world who likes them more with John than Joey. Sound of White Noise is a classic, dark, thought provoking album. and Stomp442 and The Threat Is Real have moments of brilliance.

I too dig Pantera with Trendkill being a personal fave.

I used to like Cannible Corspe but death metal really isnt my bag.

Diablos in Musica and Divine Intervention are fantastic Slayer albums. And Biohazard's first two albums are damn good also.

Gates of Ishtar and Gardenian spring to mind. God Dethroned's Bloody Blasphemy and Ravenous albums are also somewhat in the same vein (even though God Dethroned are a Dutch band, not Swedish). Terror 2000 is a great band, especially their Slaughterhouse Supremacy album.

At the Gates comes out of the Gothenburg scene. Check out this website for other bands that came from the same scene. Not all of them are going to sound like ATG, but many of them will.

Oh yeah, be sure to also check out Witchery, they're a great band.

Rob Flynn from Machine Head used to be in a really kickass thrash metal band called Vio-lence. It's a shame he's not anymore.

In general I like the Belladonna era Anthrax more than Bush, but I agree that Sound of White Noise is an amazing album, possibly Anthrax's best. Stomp 442 blew ass though imo. Volume 8-The Threat Is Real is a fun album, much better than Stomp but still nothing special. John Bush is a great singer though. His work with Armored Saint is really great.

As for Slayer... SHOW NO MERCY!!!!!

I agree to a tad about Stomp442. Maybe I have spun it too many times but while the songs are fantastic the recording is sub-par. There really isnt any meat in the sound. The guitars are very trebley (is that a new word?:) ) not too much bang for the buck there and the vocals are not very impressive at times. John can really put some soul behind him but I know for a fact that the bands idea was to just let him fly and not push to hard to make sure every note is perfect. The band will admit it wasnt the best idea. But overall, with songs like Fuled, Im in a Zone, King Size, Drop the Ball, and Tester...they are some damn good tunes almost up there with White Noise.

I also agree about Vol. 8. It is a very fun album. They sort of brought both versions of themselves together..for better or for worse...but they sure did nail the sound here. Every instument is nicely placed and EQ'ed. Tons of "hidden" sounds that even after years of hearing the album I still pick up something new or something forgotten. Catharsis is my FAVE Anthrax song ever even tho it certainly is a bit watered down musicly. Big Fat and Born Again Idiot are other choce selections. What I like about the John era is that they went from "cheesy 80's thrash metal" to something just as heavy but with more texture and meaning.

but of course Caught In A Mosh still makes me want to do some arm swinging!

ahhhh the days of S.O.D...........

Although Killers and the s/t are my favorite Maiden albums, I think Hallowed Be Thy Name is their best song. It's just so damn awesome.

Skid row - excellent band. Bach had a hell of a voice.

Motley crue - With the exception of some of their utter shit (Generation Swine), I've always enjoyed the Crue

Def Leppard - not really my thing, but I can appreciate them

Quiet riot - they were pretty cool imo

Guns 'n roses - classic band! Axl may be a whiny shit, but he can write some damn good songs

Slaugther - you're probably talking about the glam metal band Slaughter, since you listed several other glam bands... but there was a Canadian death/thrash band called Slaughter that kicked mucho ass! they're somewhat similar to Possessed's Seven Churches album but a little closer to the thrash side than the death side.

Iron maiden - most people disagree with me, but I think their first two albums were their best. Something about the Dickinson albums bore me before too long. Dickinson's last two studio solo albums on the other hand are awesome as hell!

Judas priest - Ahhh, the Priest! Sad Wings of Destiny is a fucking masterpiece, and their cover of Diamonds and Rust on Sin After Sin is beautiful. All of their albums have something to offer, but Demolition is rather shitty.

Megadeth - last two albums weren't good, but I love this band. Best song imo is Looking Down the Cross

Anthrax - talked about them in an earlier post, I prefer the Belladonna era

Scorpions - fun band, but I rarely listen to them

Accept - they fucking rule! like AC/DC with some power metal mixed in

Van Halen - something about this band really annoys me, especially the Roth era songs. I get irritable every time one of their songs come on the radio

Ozzy osbourne - you gotta love this guy! No Rest for the Wicked is an underrated album imo... as is Ozzmosis. The new album sucks though, except for that first single off of it that was all over the radio for awhile

Metallica - good band, but they were never really among the best of the thrash metal crowd, just got lucky and surfed the popularity wave... and look where that wave has carried them now :(

ac/dc - a band you can always depend on to put out an enjoyable album (if you're into the sound to begin with)

Kiss - some of their early songs are good. Love Gun in particular

Aerosmith - last album nearly made me puke, but I like alot of their stuff, and I'm in the minority in thinking that Nine Lives was actually a better album than Get a Grip

Queensryche - this band has had some stunning work in their history. Operation: Mindcrime is a masterpiece, and London is the most intelligently written "vampire" song I've ever heard.

Dio - this dude's cool, I thought his last album Killing the Dragon was an improvement over the lackluster Magica. Strange Highways is an underrated album

w.a.s.p. - GODDAMN I LOVE THIS BAND! Their early albums have such awesome songs, and then Blackie surprises everybody with the dark and serious masterpiece Crimson Idol. Only album by them I don't have a full appreciation for is Helldorado.

Stryper - I always thought these bumblebees were rather silly, but I can't deny that they had talent

Slayer - good band, but Show No Mercy was their best and they got progressively worse with each album... still though, I don't think any of their albums are actually *bad*. I even enjoy the last one which is chock full of hardcorisms God Hates Us All

(I Never Consider Living Color And The Cult as metal bands)

I think that Living Colour is much more of a metal band than Warrant, Poison, Winger, and bands like that.

Cinderella
Great white
Ratt
Poison
Britny Fox
Bon jovi
Whitesnake
Warrant
White lion
Winger

I never cared for these much at all. I guess Cinderella's ok, but still nothing I care to listen to if I can help it.

Iron Maiden is the King of Metal!!!

My Favorite singer was Bruce!!!!
I hated Blaze!!
I think Hallowed be thy name and Fear of the Dark are my favorite songs by them. Powerslave or Somewhere in Time are my favorite albums! Shit they all are. The Rock in Rio dvd is insane. Playing for 2 hours straight! Most bands nowadays only play for 3o minutes to a hour. Madien kicked ass back then and they still kick ass Now!!!!

I'm listening to Hellnation right now! Crazy grindy, punk, hardcore band. Fast and in your face!!! Amazing!

Dont forget there would be no metal without the masters of the genre themselves, Black Sabbath. They created the sound and deserve the accolades. I personally love slow, deep, sexy metal like The Melvins, Life of Agony (river runs red album only), early Clutch (still my favorite band but clearly thick rock n roll now, for the most part), My Dying bride, Amorphis, Sepultura, etc.

Definitely. Black Sabbath deserves all the credit they can get for the formation of the genre. Other bands like Led Zeppelin did have an influence on metal, and a few of their songs may even be called metal, but Black Sabbath is the band that really gave birth to the style.

My Dying Bride is an excellent band. Turn Loose the Swans is my favorite by them. Amorphis can do no wrong either. Elegy is their best to me, but all of their albums are beautiful in their own way.

Some of the stuff by the Gathering is reminiscent of The Cranes to me, maybe just cuz I heard the Cranes first. The Cranes are more low-key all the time, without the break into metal. Most metal fans appreciate them though since they have alot of the drama and atmosphere. Their songs are intricate and well-executed w/ lots of gothic mood. But the vocals are the best part, I think. Sounds JUST LIKE a little girl.

Manowar has some great songs and also some real clunkers, but overall I like them. Kings of Metal is an awesome cd. I just love flying down the highway with "Wheels of Fire" blaring in my car. "Hail and Kill" is one of my favorite songs also.

Blind Guardian is cool. I assume you've heard Demons & Wizards which is a project with Hansi Kursch (sp?) from BG and Jon Schaeffer from Iced Earth? They put out a cd a few years ago that was pretty cool.
