A damn, damn, damn, damn, damn, damn, damn creepy movie, and definitely one of John Carpenter's best. I'm too lazy to write a review, I just wanna hear everyone else's thoughts.

My rating: 8.5/10

I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago, and it was one of the most disturbing movies I've seen in a while. This movie is what I lovingly refer to as a head-fuck. It's totally under-rated and is right up there with The Thing and Christine as one of JC's best.

9/10

Dude, i didn't think anyone else but me has seen this underrated classic i thought it was a brain fucker too but it was a solid movie that i also must agree is one of John Carpenter's best flicks and Sam Neill did great as the lead guy.

Amazing John Carpenter flick, very creepy with some nice gory moments (old lady hacking her husband with a hatchet anyone?)

I totally love this movie. Am I the only one, though that sees the humor? Depending on the mood I'm in, this one is either creepy, or hilarious. Most entertaining parts? Sam Neil repeated trying to drive out of town, and "did I ever tell you my favorite color is blue?". Carpenter should be proud.

I liked this movie and all, but I was a little disappointed, because after reading the synopsis, it said it was "inspred by H.P. Lovecraft", but after watching it, it was faily obvious to me that it was much more inspired by Stephen King. And I mean, I like King and all, but fuck, Lovecraft is my Jesus Christ.

I dunno, just my two cents. -Andrew

Okay Andrew Tom, this is what happened.

SPOILERS

Sutter Cane (jurgen prochnow), the writer Sam Neil is locating, is given the power by ancient evil to be a kind of God. Whatever he writes, it becomes true. Another thing is that his books drive people mad, even turn them into monsters. Sutter Cane's new book, "In the Mouth of Madness", is the movie itself. He even says that Sam Neil is a fictional character created by him. So at the end, Sam Neil basically gives up and sees the movie adaptation of Cane's novel, and thus starts to crazy like all the others.

End of Spoilers

A great John Carpenter picture that, in his own words, is supposed to be the third in his "Apocalyptic trilogy" which were The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and this. Some cool monsters and make-up effects, an eerie atmosphere throughout the who film, and a terrific performance by Sam Neil.

Best god damned Carpenter flick ever made. Why this one didn't make more noise is beyond me. This is one of my all time favorite spook flicks. Sam Neil is the shiz-at!

Any more opinions? By the way, this is a milestone for me, as this is my 500th post! Hey, it only took me two years, as opposed to some people, who only took two days.

This is probably my favorite Carpenter movie. The cinematography was excellent.

Hey, you like the cinematography, you oughta give a listen to the commentary on the DVD. You'll find out more about what really goes on in cinematographer Gary Kibbe's head than you ever dreamed possible...But seriously, this is a great flick, and my fave horror film of the 90's alongside SE7EN, CEMETARY MAN and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Also stands as the best Carpenter film since PRINCE OF DARKNESS way back in 87'...

I just watched this movie for the first time in years. I was curled up into a little ball and was really really creeped out. Sam Neil layed down some really good acting and the visuals made me tango on the inside. Great movie.

Nice to see so many positive reviews of In The Mouth Of Madness .When I saw it at my local cinema I found it to be one of the creepiest movies I had seen in a long time .Being a HUGE Carpenter fan I thought I may be a bit biased towards it as it did'nt do too well at the box office but now I see that I was'nt the only one who liked it.

very imaginative film. johnny boy should go back to making films like this once in a while. what really gets to me is that this movie only made around 8million while crap like ikwydls makes around 70.

I own the dvd with the commentary by Carpenter. Some of the coolest and most creative scenes I have ever saw in a movie.
