I know these threads haven't been blooming with new support so if your new to this idea hop on board we need some new insight! It's a great way to find new and interesting artists.

Well here are my choices for this week:

I thought I would start off with a band from the female persuasion, Cat Power. Chan Marshall aka cat power may be my favorite female rocker of all time.

The Band : Cat Power

The Song: Cross Bones Style

Now for some fun guitar pop. I just recently saw the front man of this band, Doug Maurtch live and it was one of the most emotionally charged performances I had ever seen. His former band built to spill was one of the most talanted guitar driven bands from the indie scene over the last few years.

The Band: Buit to Spill

The Song: Carry the Zero

Now for my third pick I thought I would try something completely different just for fun. I don't know if you guys are going to like this or not but I love it. It's a song about a man who wakes up in heaven and finds out its nothing like they say. It's Nick Cave with his former band the Birthday Party. In between the snarls and bangs is pure poetry and a pretty funny story to boot.

The Band: The Birthday Party

The Song: Mutiny in Heaven

Well let me know what you think :)

Cat Power-Cross Bones Style-

A nice feel to it, although it gets a little repetitive. Has the means to be a haunting song, but doesn't quite go the distance. Not truly my cup of tea, but a nice little song.

Built to Spill-Carry the Zero-

Fun song, I'd listen to this again. The singing was quite good, although it reminded me of a lot of other voices out there. Not incredible original but one of the better of its sort.

Good picks so for bowieee, I'm searching for that last one. :)

The Band : Cat Power

The Song: Cross Bones Style
good song nice soft guitars quite a distinctive voice,a bit like an upbeat clannad i quite liked this one.

the band;built to spill
The Song: Carry the Zero
this is my cup of tea nice indie style beat ,in a sort of retro 60's style ,the drums are really stand out carrying the beat along really well ,his voice is ok but it does not have to be great for this style of music,i really liked this.

The Band: The Birthday Party

The Song: Mutiny in Heaven
i am still listening to this over and over still trying to take it all in,not really my thing to be honest but lots of fun, they must have been on some strange shit to write this stuff, very dramatic and theatrical i bet bcv loves it though.

good pics bowieee you can tell a lot of thought went into them ,they were all very different, and for me built to spill was a stand out.

Cat Power - Cross Bones Style

A seductive little song...nice subtle geetar's and great vocals. I did like this one...it reminded me a wee bit of PJ Harvey. The song did "meander" but I didn't particularly mind that. I'm not one for unnecessary climaxes and this tune didn't really need to go anywhere in particular. A thumbs-up...definitely worthy of a listen when I'm in a rather sombre mood.

Built to Spill - Carry the Zero

Pleasant intro...and very easy on the ears. The vocals are strong, the music is indie-ish yet poppy (reminiscent of Gorky's Zycotic Mynci & The Lily's in parts), and the guitar solo slots in nicely. I agree with Calf about the retro feel...and it's one of the better songs of this particular ilk. It's likeable after just one listen and it'd definitely stand up to repeat playing. Its not exactly ground-breaking or new, but a refreshingly good little song, polished and toe-tappingly decent!

The Birthday Party - Mutiny in Heaven

Well I luuuuuuurve Nick Cave, and this is certainly a song that you'd have to form an opinion about...none of that "hmmm, well it's not too bad" malarkey. Okay, Calf is SPOT-ON...I love it, purely because it's such an energetic, off-the-wall, poetic number...and you can't beat Cave spitting out the obscenities like a trooper. I just wanted to take it all in...so I located the lyrics and had a couple of listen's. Some of the words are just awe-inspiring..."Canker upon canker upon one million tiny punctures. That look like...Long thin red ribbons draped across the arms of a lil' mortal girl"...I have no idea what that means exactly but I want to find out. Anyway, this one will be on my play-list for days to come, at least until I find out what the lyrics are all about!!! A huuuuuge thumbs-up for this one...I've been wanting to hear more Nick Cave/The Birthday Party for yonks, I just never knew where to start.

Incidentally, you must hear Nick Cave's version of PULP'S Disco 2000 (it's the B-side of Bad Cover Version, and that's irony for you...;)) It's tremendous, the man has transformed an upbeat ditty into something...well something COMPLETELY new and extremely amusing!!!

Anyway, thanking you for the pick's Bowieee, you obviously went for an eclectic little selection, and I'm well impressed. I don't think I even need to tell you my favourite of the bunch.

I think my mood is a bit off for doing this but I'll give it a shot:

Cat Power - Cross Boned Style

The lyrics had the potential for greatness, but they get stuck in that kind of musical monotony that a lot hipsters call laid back, but I just call uninspired and repetitive. This is one of those songs that should've ended 2 minutes prior to its actual end time. HOWEVER, it's not really a bad song, but then again it's not one I'd visit regularly. Maybe now and again when the urge arrives.

It also sounds like a good tune to hear when you need to wind down.

Built to Spill - Carry the Zero

A nice poppy-guitar UP song. It feels like I heard the same idea in a Sundays' song, I'm not sure. I usually have to be in the mood for these types of songs, but for some reason I feel the lead singer subscribes to that kind "geek chic" vocals delivery that always puts me off.

The Birthday Party - Mutiny in Heaven

I have a soft spot for Nick Cave, but I also like him when he uses his voice in a certain way and when he doesn't, the song just dies on me, which unfortunately is the case with this "Mutiny in Heaven". I understand he's young at teh time of this song and full of piss and vinegar and hasn't yet learned how to properly coral the main potentcy of his deep, menacing voice so that it's real power can be experienced. His voice neds to be savored, not pass by you like a speeding car. It doesn't jive.

Thanks everyone for responding. :)

Now that I listen to it I can see how the cat power song can sound repetitive. I'm used to listening to it in an album context and the whole album flows dreamily about and the slow flow of the song fits in perfectly there, but listening to this for the first time I could see how it can sound monotonous. But don't let this put you off to this outstanding artist. One day you guys will meet a friend who has her now famous Covers record and give it another chance!

As far as the Nick Cave song goes I'm glad at least a few liked it I wasn't sure because some of my friends can't stand the birthday party and they yell at me everytime I play them in the car. I thought I would just throw it out there for fun.

Well thanks again everyone for responding :)

I'm not sure if Electrite has had a chance to do a SOTW thread yet, So the Sotw host spot for next week is open to her if she wants it.

I just managed to download The Birthday Party-Mutiny in Heaven, and I hate to say this, but I am truly not in the mood for this kind of song. I recently saw The Fantasticks, so I'm in a sappy "Try to remember the kiiind of September..." mood, but I will try to review it.

I'm not really a Nick Cave fan, but this wasn't that bad. I wouldn't get mad were you to play it in my car, if that says anything. This really is a good song, depending on my mood. This one? Nuh-uh, but I could see myself listening to this song again. I'll have to give it another shot in awhile, after the goddamn musical music wears off

....try to remember when life was so tender that no one wept, except, the willoow...

Holy Shit! That Nick Cave cover of Disco 2000 is so good. I'm listening to it for the third time in a row right now. Wow thanks Bcv I just ordered the single from amazon.

It's on CD2 of Bad Cover Version Bowieee. I'm glad you enjoyed! It's a great version, and Nick Cave's voice is just perfect set against the rather mundane, yet tender lyrics and the lulling music.

The title song is rather amusing also...all dodgy karaoke singers crooning along to Bad Cover Version, I'm sure you'll have plenty of fun guessing who they're trying to impersonate...Some of them are bloody awful ;).The video is a LIVE AID parody, and it's pretty hilarious...A demented Meatloaf, a scary Cher and a very shitey Bowie are definite highlights.

I think the song of the week threads are going on life support but I have a good idea. I think I'll go make the topic now.
