I'm going with three heavyweights (and I'm not talking about their collective bulky figures): Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates in ABOUT SCHMIDT, and Meryl Streep in ADAPTATION.

I'm a big fan of "spreading the wealth" come awards time, so I think that the Academy should reward never-nominated comebacks and breakthrough roles in Jack's Best Actor category (like Dennis Quaid in THE ROOKIE, Hugh Grant in ABOUT A BOY and Campbell Scott in ROGER DODGER).

As for the Best Supporting Actress race, Streep and Bates are always contenders (the Academy would give these actresses nominations if they sneezed in the right direction). Instead of these perennial faves, I wish they would honor relative newcomers Amanda Peet (for either IGBY GOES DOWN or CHANGING LANES), and the real best female supporting performance of the year...Ellen Pompeo in MOONLIGHT MILE. Susan Sarandon, the real best actress of the Streep-Bates generation, also deserves a nom for her double duty in both IGBY GOES DOWN or MOONLIGHT MILE. Funny how those two films keep generating worthy contenders!

I'm usually a big fan of both Nicholson and Bates (Streep is a glorified soap opera actress, if you ask me)...but give credit where credit is due. These were not among the five best performances of the year.

Naomi Watts' performance in THE RING was quite overrated.

Samantha Morton in Minority Report.

She was good for what she had to do, but I don't understand why people are raving about her performance. She did not impress me in the least.

I'm not sure why so many schmoes loved Amanda Peet in Changing Lanes. She had so little screen time, and didn't have to do much other than be a sneaky bitch.

True, she did have little screentime. But, at the same time, she was very convincing and realistic in her role, which nearly stole the show. And, from what I've seen of her, she usually plays the goofy, comedic roles (Saving Silverman, The Whole Nine Yards). In Changing Lanes, she played against type, and, as I said, was very good.

Personally speaking, I didn't see anything special in Jodie Foster's performance in Panic Room.

I agree 100%! Amanda Peet was excellent in Changing Lanes, especially for the limited amount of screentime she had. And I don't see anything special about Jodie Foster's performance in Panic Room either, yes, she was definitely good, but nowhere near one of the best performances of the year.

I second that. I wasn't all that impressed with his performance. In fact, I thought he was miscast. Just couldn't picture him as the bad guy.

While I think the Big A is a bit too harsh on Meryl, I agree that Susan is every bit as much of a heavyweight and somehow never gets quite that level of recognition. She still kind of scares stupid people, for one thing...
