View Full Version : Brit bands you should find out about...

Hundred Reasons - think 'At The Drive In' meets 'Jimmy Eat World' and you realise you've met an emo-indie-punk-metal band (wow, all four?). Grating and screaming vocals contrasts the moderate rock vibe and harmonising background vocalists of the bass player and other guitarist. Try 'Silver', 'If I Could' and 'Falter'
Coldplay - Set to take U2's crown. A piano-dominated indie band who have the eccentric style of Radiohead but the infectious songwriting of Chris Martin, a genius with capturing the pathos of a great song. Be warned, great music is only a shop away... Try 'Politik', 'The Scientist' and 'Amsterdam'
Idlewild - Oddly likeable band that blends indie with grungy rock. Try 'American English'
Muse - Insane sound of the baroque and classical meeting metal. Ridiculously high-pitched vocals and cunning piano intros, you end up with a gothic delight. Try 'New Born' and 'Sunburn'. Brit classics.
Feeder - pretty rock, pretty vocals, masks a heavier grungier side to a legendary UK band. Try 'Insomnia' and 'Helium'.

Bands I've listened to today...
Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
I'm not a fan of their new album but the fundamental elements of emo begin with 'Clarity' - the opening ballad of 'Table for Glasses' and a genuine masterpiece - progressive harmonising and a gentle melody to support it. Other standout tracks include 'Blister' and 'Your New Aesthetic'. This is the sound of youthfulness for those who still resemble some form of innocence.
Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
Their heaviest album to date - born out of the Deftones generation but with the added support of the enigmatic hip-hop stylings of Brandon Boyd and the inclusion of a drum n'bass DJ. How american music should be.
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Subversive material redefining the rock genre with beats reminiscent of Buddy Holly in 'No One Knows'. The dark nature of their vocals and basslines highlights the original rhythms of the guitar riffs. Challenging material, but hard to appreciate after first viewing. Try QOTSA's 2nd album 'Rated R' to understand their aesthetic as a band.

Teenage Fanclub.
They've got a "Best Of" coming out soon, not sure if it will be released in the States,
if not, look out for "Songs from Northern Britain " or "Grand Prix",
both delectable slices of harmonic rock.:)

Teenage Fanclub are one of many bands I love that truly deserve to achieve more success than they have thus far. They are one of the finest bands in Scotland. All of their albums are worthy of your time. In particular though Grand Prix, Songs From Northern Britain & Howdy are all magnificent.
Another band that folks outside the UK (or even within the UK) may not have heard of is The Cooper Temple Clause. Their debut album was so fucking eclectic but there wasn't a duff track on it. For my money it was the finest debut album of last year.

As soon as anyone mentions Teenage Fanclub, I have to mention The Diggers, who were on Creation yet cruelly and inexplicably ignored. Seek them out, though they split after they're first album. Infectious summer pop, in the words of the music journo's cliche.
I guess there is no love for StarSailor on the boards. :(
They are a great band, and like in my other posts....Good Souls is a great song about life.
BTW...they are not metal or anything like that, but they are also not pop either. Just good sounds. :)
