I went to see Pitch Black in the theatre a little over two years ago, and I loved it. When it came out on video, I went and bought it, and I have watched it countless times since then. This is a rare movie that, in my opinion, gets better with each viewing.
It has everything. A great premise, so simple that it's surprising that it's never been done before. A spaceship crash-lands on a desolate planet with three suns. The planet is inhabited by creatures that can only live in the darkness. Unfortunaely for the passangers of the ship, there's about to be a solar eclipse.
See how simple the premise is? Simple, yet also very original. And if you think that this is all the film's about, you're wrong.
This movie is LOADED with hidden subplots and messages. It tackles many complex issues, such as sexism, addiction, and religion, yet still manages to leave plenty of room for action, scary scenes involving the creatures, and some bloodletting violence.
The CGI effects aren't entirely convincing, but they are never overly showy or fake looking. It's probably a plus that the creatures stay in the dark for the majority of the film.
One thing that I loved is the fact that time was taken to develop nearly of the characters, including the secondary ones. There were a few characters who weren't really touched upon, but for the most part, the characters were well-developed and interesting. This actually made you feel sorry for a lot of the characters when they became food for the malicious creatures.
One of the best things about Pitch Black is the fact that the characters are never who you think they are. Just when you think you've got a character figured out, they go and surprise you. They always manage to keep you guessing. This applies to several of the characters. If you've seen the movie, you know what I mean. If you haven't, go see it, and you'll understand.
Also, this is one of the rare movies in which you don't know which characters are going to survive, and which ones aren't. It's nearly impossible to guess who will live. There's a slight possibility that you'll know, but I believe that most people would be very, very surprised. I know I was.
The performances are top-notch. Radha Mitchell (Fry), Vin Diesel (Riddick), Cole Hauser (Johns) and Claudia Black (Shazza) all stood out, even if Keith David did seem miscast as the Muslim priest.
There's also a terrific score, great direction, and some very clever dialogue. All in all, I love this movie, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
And ***MINOR SPOILERS***
Any movie that has the balls to kill of a kid is okay in my book.
