View Full Version : The Music Tag Game - The Thread That Wouldn't Die!

O.K. Since the Song of the Week threads have been crashing and burning lately i was trying to think of a way we could improve the idea so more people would want to participate, This game just came to me and hopefully it can get off the ground.
The way the game works is one person posts a song he or she wants someone else to give a review for. Then when someone wants to join in on the game they reply with a post that only says *TAG*. This means that person has begun downloading that song. (THis way there arn't three people downloading a song but only one gets to post because they listened to it before the others were done) Then that person listens to the song and gives a review. Then the person who did the review posts a new song of their own and the game continues.
Hopefully this way alot more people get to have turns and everyone who wants to participate can, with a much smaller timeline to have to wait.
Well Ill start it off with
Artist: Tom Waits
Song: Misery is the River of The World
and people feel free to download all the songs that catch your eye and post how you liked them even if you wern't the first person to *TAG* Thats the whole purpose of these threads. To find new music and enjoy it. :)

Okey dokey, here we go...
The intro to this tune is particularly enticing, theatrical and wry...and if anything, Mr Waits has a very unique sound. The song makes me want to march and jut out my bottom lip, which is bizarre.... I like it actually, and I can see it being a grower because of the formulaic feel (and I mean that in a positive way) and the merry-go-round like music. The lyrics are bleak, yet the actual song is rather uplifting. A definite thumbs-up...I'm on my 3rd listen and my ears are becoming strangely accustomed to this blokes raspy chant.
I'm not very familiar with Waits but for some reason he conjures up an image of back-streets, cigarettes and empty bottles of whisky. I'm probably way off...but never mind.
Thanking you for the pick Bowieee...:)
The next recommendation is a bit of old-skool POP...It's time for a boogie...

And actually BCV you are right on target. Whiskey, Cigarettes and back streets are a huge part of Wait's songs and persona.

I LOOOOOVE this song. I used to go watch this 80's cover band about once a month at this club down here in San Diego and they used to play this song every show. It was so much fun. Definetly an upbeat happy dance song. Plus its alot of fun to sing along to with a bunch of people. Nice pick.

Schmoetastic Idea, Bowieee!!!
*TAG* The Origin Of Love, Hedwig's epic lament to find her other half, should come across as the biggest song on the soundtrack. Definitely the sappiest thing I've ever heard a drag queen sing... and I own an Anne Murray CD... :D
Epic, torchy. JC Mitchell calls on massive images of universes colliding, Greek (....) Gods flailing thunderbolts. Its cool stuff. Here's is the token Queen/Dire Straits song that pretty much everyone would expect on this soundtrack.. But it holds up. Check it outttt~!
Pick:

I'm not one for techno the repeated drum beats usually slowly bring on a headache but you can do no wrong when a song has air raid sirens. I actually liked this ditty alot. I think I have an air raid siren fetish. Anyways its a great song, it had alot of energy going for it. Thanks for putting it out to download!

the Gandharvas: Kicking in the water
Is it just me or does the lead singer sound just like the lead singer of Janes Addiction? Well to me these guys sounded like a poppy Janes Addiction but yet their own style at the same time. I liked the song it was catchy and different and had a fun "could see a bunch of people hopping up and down at the concert" feeling to it. Great pick! Thanks romero :)

I really enjoyed this not so little song. I liked the intro with the birds in the background it was very interesting. The acoustic guitar was very cool and the synth effects were well placed. I liked the whole sombre mood of the song, I've been listening to a lot of songs like this lately. I'm not sure what instrument was being played during the intro but it was very eclectic sounding and I liked it. It will take me a couple of more listens to fully grasp the lyrics, it usually does for any song. This was a great listen and it will defenitely go on my play list.
My Pick:
Moby: That's When I Reach For My Revolver
I picked one that will be a little easier to find for people and is still a great tune.

Have you ever never given an artist a second thought and then see them in concert and become an instant fan? Well that was the case with moby and I. I never really was a fan and I saw him on tour with bowie and I was put into awe. The power his music has on stage sucked me in completely. He followed Bowie and thats a tough act to follow but he did it with style, grace and energy.
This song took me by suprise. Its a little bit more straight foward rock than I'm used to by Moby and I liked that alot. The build up of the song is great and it has a good relisten appeal to it. My respect for moby grows with each listen. Thanks Submethod!

Mars Volta: Concertina
Nawt bad a'tall. I was actually expecting to be able to say 'this band is reminisent of,' but find myself unable to compare it to anything really, which is a good thing. The song was hectic and melodic at the same time w/ intricate timing changes and standard vocals. I really liked the interesting affect on the vocals and the descent (or climb?) into more of a rock n roll sound towards the end. Very interesting pick. Not necessarily one for my shelf but I'd definitely listen again if I heard it.
Speaking of Rock N Roll, hows about a good dose of it:
New Pick:
El Jefe Speaks
Clutch
(if you cannot find this song, go for something a little more accessible like Big News I or Spacegrass from the 2nd album. This is my favorite band and listening to the lyrics is a must. If you need to search online for them, it's usually worth your time. The guy writes in riddles.)

well when you said rock and roll i pictured a bit of elvis or buddy holly when what i got was a hell of a lot meatier than that.
starts with a great guitar intro and then the drums kick in with a vengence, his voice is very rough but definatly suits the song, the lyrics are quite fun too.the only downside i had was it was a little repeticious towards the end but quite enjoyable,i could imagine this song on a horror soundtrack.

Yeah, I asked him what the lyrics to this song were about (like I said he writes in riddles) and it's actually about a drag race. The 'jesus on the dashboard' reference refers to the little Jesus figurines alot of hot-rodders put on their dash.

One of the first cd's I ever bought was a Black Grape one and that eventually led me to the Happy Mondays, a very talnted band. I had never heard this mix before and its a quite good one. It had me picturing a dance party in the middle of an old catholic church. The chants in the background mixed with the lead singers voice crooning over the beats made this one a winner for me. Once again, I really like this band. The vocals are really reminiscent of 80's pop like Depeche Mode mixed with a little 'hairbandedness' (how's that for a word) and the music sketches between rock and industrial, lending it more of a 'new' quality. This song wasnt quite as much to my taste as some others I've heard since it seeed a little more formula...but all in all a good pick. My favorite so far by them is actually their wonderful cover of Wicked Game. But I'm open to hear more.
Next Pick:

I thought you might like it. It's one of my favorite songs of all time. You can actually just imagine that it is the song the Sirens sang in 'The Odyssey', can't you? When I graduated, we had my party at a friends house who lives in the country nestled in a valley. We turned it up all the way (the stereo was outside) and everyone just sat in silence w/ a lump in their throat listening to this ethereal tune echoing through those mountains. A memory like none other.

Concrete Blonde - In Particular
A good song. I had to listen to it three times to decide whether I liked it or not. Full of hand claps and wobbly rhythms with vocals that start out quite shrill and finish up breathy. I've actually been meaning to check this band out for a number of years. I remember reading a lot of positive reviews in NME & Melody Maker back when the eighties gave birth to the nineties. If I could say one bad thing about the song it would be that it perhaps outstays it's welcome at over five minutes. Just slightly though and it didn't affect my enjoyment one bit. Nice one Bowiee. First off…I downloaded the song by "The Mortal Coil", and I’ve got to admit it really is beautiful…and so simplistic. The vocals are almost angelic and the music is just too bloody delicate, truly complimentary set against that stunning voice.
You got it in one when you descibed the track as "ethereal"...

I liked this immediately, it’s right up my street…a slightly brooding (but jaunty) country sound with a bit of a twist. His voice is extremely pleasant, and I didn’t expect to hear any naughty words, but alas…It’s only the bloody F-word, always a bonus in my book!!! It’s short and sweet and I’d definitely like to hear more of these kids. This is the sort of folksy/country stuff that Bowieee might even dig...It's not quite as depressing as Gram, and there is absolutely no mention of pick-up trucks breaking down, spouses leaving, and dogs dying.
Thanking you kindly Psycho!!!

Ha. :) thats my favorite line after I looked online to find out what exactly they were saying. Great intro about the dinner but once the lead singer started rambling I couldn't make heads or tails of what he was singing about. Thank god for lyrics on the internet. After I started listening to it while reading the lyrics it really grew on me. Its another reminder of how much of a joke it can be over here in America. The lead singer has the snarling type of singing voice that I like alot so it really worked well over the music clanging around in the background. I like songs with tons of energy and this one has plenty to spare. great pick thanks BCV. :)

Finally done...
I know this one...and I like it.
The vocals are fab. I always favour the more unique (sometimes tuneless ;)) voices...and this is no exception. Its a nice easy-listening ditty, classic geetars, great lyrics, good length (ooh er) and top vocals. I like the wailing near the end, gotta be my favourite part. My ONLY gripe...It meanders a bit...I'd have liked a bit more of the waily stuff, but a solid tune nonetheless. You can't really go wrong with Talking Heads, and I should make the effort to purchase an album or two.
And now for something completely Pulpy (again)...

I was wondering how long you would be able to wait before choosing a Pulp song. The Fear is a good choice but i'll let someone else Tag it who hasn't already heard it. Personally I prefer Wickerman...it's my current favorite Pulp song (though if you ask me again tomorrow it'll likely be something else...think i'll be in a Razzamatazz kinda mood tomorrow).

I'm trying to create my own little legion of Pulp People. We'll take over the bloody world one day...you mark my words. "Wickerman" is gorgeous Psycho, I'm with you on that. But I just can't help thinking that an 8 and a half minute Cocker monologue might be a bit much for a Pulp virgin.

I'm not tagging I'll leave the next post up to the count.
I just want to review this song. Lately due to these boards I've become a pulp sponge soaking up all the different songs everyone reccomends and my respect for them grows with every listen. You have to admit the lead singer has a charisma and a air to him alot of performers left behind in the 70's and 80's.
This song pretty much paints the ugly picture of depression and the baggage that comes with it. The music is perfect, the voice is perfect. This may be the best pulp song I've heard so far thanks BCV. I seriously think I've become addicted to this thread but my music knowledge is getting all the better for it.

Well, let us begin by me saying I am *quite* thrilled to be here, I think I'm gonna like this game. Ok, onto the review...
I tend to like some of Pulp's music anyway, but I was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. It's got flare and style, and if they have a couple more like it, is enough to make me a fan of Pulp and one Jarvis Cocker (whose voice I think is absolutely perfect for the music he makes). This really is "My kinda music", it's not overbearing, but at the same time a bit overwhelming...emotional, but not melodramatic. And when it is melodramatic...I'm just enjoying it too much to give a damn. :) Fabulous choice BCV
Ok, now I must choose...after much deliberating. I reckon a good number of you guys have heard this one, but it is a bit different from previous versions and I think it is utterly and completely overwhelming and powerful (and, is that Ewan's voice I hear in the background? ;))

Annie was right, this is depressing but in that very rousing, spiritual, romanticized way.
Must be an Irish song:D
This is just the kind of song I'd expect in a Bruckheimer produced film. The military drum beat running through the song, as well as the bag pipes which we usually here in funeral processions of police officers and fireman (men who sacrifice their lives for the public), it's all so blatantly patriotic, but nothing's wrong with that.
But the song is much more saddening since it's our dearly departed Joe Strummer delivering the vocals.

how cool is this song, the intro just oozes class you feel like putting on shades and dressing in a black suit, but just as you start to relax it changes direction when the trumpets kick in followed by a great singalong chorus, and then the jazzy interlude takes us back to the shades and suits ,its a song full of twist and turns i can see why tarentino picked it for resevoir dogs it exudes cool and a bit of mischeif at the same time.

well i have not really heard that much of this band so have not really been able to form much of an opinion, but this is a nice relaxing mellow tune,he has a really distinctive voice that really suits the song although it will take a few listens to,to really make out a lot of the lyrics but what you can make out is really good.
the music is very good too a few twists and changes in their and the sax solo near the end is really nice, you just dont get much sax these days in music and it is a great instrument in the right tune.perfect fodder for sitting around reading the papers and having playing in the background.the vertion i am listening to is a live one so that is a bonus too,the guy can really sing his stuff.
ok i have been trying to push my fave bands on people in here(if bcv can push pulp, then i am pushin the roses) so here's another of their's,this one is very unlike anything else they have done and the guitar solo at the end is the best i have ever heard live.

Well, I downloaded this twice because the first version was live and I could barely hear the vocals. But it was also kinda misleading because it sounded like a lot more of a rock song live, maybe it was the really good guitar solo at the end. Anyway, when I downloaded the album version I was a little dissapointed since it seemed to be a bit more like the english pop of the 60's that I've never been a big fan of. However, it was catchy and I love that I finally heard this band since I've been hearing of them forever. The end of the song made me want to get my go-go boots out...not a bad thing but not exactly my cup-o'-tea either. I'd wager they're better live, huh?
Since I'm trying to do a male/female/male/female thing I'll switch to a sweet little tune I've always loved by one of my very favorite artists of all time. Her lyrics mean so much to me.

This is the good stuff. A fragile guitar line and beautiful voice singing a song that relates a tale of love gone wrong that is lyrically poetic and enormously affecting. I've never heard Joni Mitchell before (that i'm aware of) but this is simply gorgeous and from this one song I am able to glean the notion that she has been a massive influence on many of the female singer/songwriters that I love.. Gomez are pop craft that hasn't been matched in a looooong time. Hate to compare them to anyone, but there are WAYY too many resemblances to newer Blur. The over production, which seems wayy out of place here, is my only complaint with the song. Its seems silly to go all out in space when you're dealing with music that'd sound best out of the back of a pick up truck..!

Ok played catch up just to see all the new music everyone has put out there.
Whippin, Gomez. I really like this song. It's unique and catchy. It is making its way to my play list for awhile!
What Jail is like, Afghan Whigs. Nice Guitars and a voice screeching above the warbles and crashes that all comes together into one very enjoyable package. Especially like the piano pounding away in the background. Adds that special touch.
A Case of You, Joni Mitchel. Joni, Joni, Joni. What a voice. It's like a bird singing to you about all the beautiful things its seen. Plus the song mentions Canada. I'm a big fan of Canada so that automatically qualifies this one for an A in my book.
I am the Ressurection, Stone Roses.
This sounds kind of like belle and sebastian yet not. A charming little song that makes me wish for sunny days and a big grassy field to lay in and listen to it to.
Taste the Pain, RHCP. Ah RHCP. One of the best bands I have ever seen live. Watching flea hitting his base as john wails on his guitar and anthony crooning into the mic is close to a heavenly experience. This is a classic song with a funk filled backbone and good lyrics. Anthony is a excellent lyricst and alot of people over look that for the funk and I think thats a shame.
Deacon Blue, Dignity. This song sounds like a cooler solo paul simon. Very mellow yet the singer comes across with a presense that made me wan to listen closer to what he wanted to say. A perfect driving up into the mountains song. :)
Little green Bag, George Baker: Where are my sunglasses when i need them. Reminded me to wash the blood off my black suit :)
Anyways a classic song that could bring the cool out of even richard simmons.

Cat Power - Werewolf
A number of months ago...before the reorganisation of the boards...before the music board existed...there was a thread in the General Horror forum on the subject of what music tickled which schmoes fancy. Before it was shut down I took note of several recommendations made by several schmoes and made haste to check 'em out. So I bought the Moon Pix album by Cat Power. I then proceeded to listen to it a couple of times before filing it under "to be checked out again later when i'm in a more appropriate mood". I don't know why it didn't click with me immediately. It just didn't. I then proceeded to forget that I owned it. A couple of days ago I was digging through a bunch of CDs looking for something to play and rediscovered it. Upon playing it I also discovered that I was in the right kind of mood to enjoy it. So I was quite pleased to see Bowiee had chosen a Cat Power track for this thread. Werewolf is all gently plucked guitar and intimate vocals. Her fragile voice brings to mind a female version of Will Oldham (Palace, Bonnie "Prince" Billy...) as do the lyrics. Bowiee...you should seriously give some thought to seeking out some Will Oldham, Palace (or Palace Brothers as they are sometimes known) or Bonnie "Prince" Billy stuff. If you like this Cat Power song then I think you will definitely get a kick out of Oldham's weird lo-fi musings.
As for my choice...hmm, let me think...

again i had never heard of this band but i will definatly be looking out for some more of them, very 80's sounding ,i love this kind of guitar based music, this sounds like it would be a great live track,a nice beat and great guitar rhythm carried along with some nice drummin.the only thing i was'nt so hot on was the end which got a little repetitious.
ok lets try a little bit of early stuff

Echo and the Bunnymen-The Cutter
This song is so much fun to hear. I really enjoyed everything about it, especially the style. I'm certainly looking forward to being able to re-listen to this one. How idiotic I must look, sitting at my computer dancing to this song...but...I do not forsee myself stopping listening to it anytime soon. Just a joy to listen to, and I cannot really pinpoint why. Great pick, Paul.
Now, before I give my pick, I must say that I'll go through my music and think "that's a great one, I bet..." and then I realize that it is a song I've gotten off of this game or the SOTW threads. Typical of me.
Anyway, here is my pick. Although this song is strange by most definition, there is something oddly attractive about it.

Band - ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead
Song - Relative Ways
That was me who reccomended the cat power cd :D I'm glad she eventually grew on you. Moon Pix is a great album. The musicians backing her up are from the dirty three. The same band who collaborated with low and backed up nick cave on The boatmans call.
I downloaded songs by will oldham, palace, and Bonnie Prince Belly. I really really liked what I heard. Right now I'm listening to I see a darkness and its moody, somber, and touching. Thanks Psychocandy :)
Oh and because you had suggested Jesus and Mary chain over in the horror forums discussion areas so much I decided to check them out. I really liked the greatest hits cd I had picked up. Just a little thank you I forgot to pass on.

The Shins - Caring Is Creepy
Liked this one immediately. Sounding midway between 60's psychedelia and indie rock this a superbly percussive little song with some wonderfully impenetrable lyrics and a superb synth hook that repeats throughout. I'd never heard of these guys before and was surprised to discover that they are a recent addition to the Sub Pop roster that spawned Mudhoney, Nirvana and a host of other "grunge" acts. This is great stuff and another worthwhile discovery that i'm going to have to act upon. I can see their debut album making it's way into my collection before long.

Yeah...I thought it was your good self who made with the Cat Power reccomendation. Cheers.
Under his many monikers Will Oldham has quite a substantial back catalogue (one i've only got about half of) and it's all good stuff.
Glad you liked the Mary Chain. They will always have a special place in my heart because they opened my eyes and ears to a world of music that I didn't even know existed. I hope that the Greatest Hits CD leads you to check out some of the albums. They are all good and many of their best songs ain't on the "21 Singles" CD.

Bear in mind though that this song, although excellent, is in no way typical of Lambchop. Lambchop songs usually operate on a far quieter and way more sedate level than this song. This song though is one of my faves though...not least because I saw Kurt Wagner (the guiding force behind Lambchop) live and this was the song he closed his set with. It was a solo acoustic performance but he tore the shit out of this song and left the audience wide-eyed and amazed.

This is right up my alley. The music in the background accentuates the song perfectly. The song slowly unraveles its tale while the music grinds in the background as the perfect backdrop. I really liked this one Psychocandy. I really have to check out more from these guys. Don't they back up someone famous on an album? I remember seeing a cd where they collaborated with someone big. hmmm I'll try to remember who it was.
On this next pick I was introduced to this song when bowie played it live at his show. But instead of taking lead vocals he had his bassist Gail take lead and he did background vocals. I fell in love with the song and then tracked down the original artist. She turned out to be one of the biggest art performance artists of all time. Now about 6 cds, one concert viewing and a box set later I'm still a fan.

I know what you mean about having to be in the right mood. Her stuff can be quite strange sometimes. :)
I just downloaded The Elms for fun. The guy kind of scared me when he said he was hiding behind my sofa. *shudder*. A decent story but kind of sounds like an ode to a stalker. :) also just wanted to add the build up to the song grows on you. The singing becaomes more and more fevered and you feel the emotions the singer is sending out. Thanks Submethod!

Got to agree with you 100% with regards to Embrace. They deserved a lot more success than they achieved. I absolutely adore their first album "The Good Will Out" and "Drawn From Memory" was another corker. I haven't actually had a chance to buy their third album as of yet but intend to rectify the situation immediately. A great band brought low by a combination of idiotic critics and public indifferance. Fucking shame.

Verve - History...
I've always found the works of both The Verve and their now solo lead singer Richard Ashcroft to be variable in terms of quality. This song, however, epitomises all that is good about Ashcroft's muse and his bandmates music when they are suitably inspired. It's a beautifully crafted and wonderfully affecting piece of symphonic rock that in lesser hands would come across as pompous. I'll always be a bigger fan of The Verve pre-Northern Soul (I found the good/bad song ratio to be about 50/50 on this album and the trend continued with it's successor, Urban Hymns). Good choice Calfboy.
Hmm...let's see...what next...

For belle and sebastian check out Tiger Milk and fox in the snow. Both albums are pretty much chockfull of the best of their work. The boy with the arab strap is decent but has some weak parts and after that IMO it all went downhill reallly fast.
For Leanord Cohen I think you will really like his later stuff. Try checking out the MORE greatests hits album and if you like that all the albums are good. Same goes for his earlier stuff the greatest hits album is a good place to start.

Summer Feeling-Jonathan Richman
I really enjoy Jonathan Richman, mainly because his voice and lyrics always remind me of summertime (surprise!) and the first time I heard 'hot nights' on the no alternative compilation. I really like his lyrics and their simplicity and the fact that he doesnt attempt to out-sing himself is also a plus. This is a breezy, quirky song that also suits his style. I think I remember hearing it in 'there's something about mary' but I'm not sure. I loved his presence in that movie...fun stuff.

Ween - Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)...
Although not wholly unfamiliar with Ween's schtick i've never really investigated beyond the few videos of theirs that MTV have played in the years since the band's inception. The reason for my lack of interest is partly due to a sneaking suspicion that as a result of not taking themselves seriously they sometimes come across as a bit of a novelty act. That and the fact that "Push The Li'll Daisies" almost made me invest in a handgun so I could put holes in my TV next time MTV played it. This particular track although nowhere near as goddamn irritating as "Daisies" has done nothing to dispel my worries about their novelty value. The lyrics are wholly unappealing also. Quirky songs about serious illnesses generally don't rock my boat. There's no doubt in my mind that there is talent there. It just isn't talent that I recognise. So sorry. I definitely understand the lack of interst in Ween. This song is one of their attempts at morbid humor. They are an aquired taste though I believe their songs are more a product of experimental drug use than the desire to be novelty. Just to humor me (and yourself too) I want you to download 'Piss Up A Rope' and 'Freedom of '76' so you can see why fans of Ween are as diverse as their music. Believe me, you won't believe it's the same band. Let me know what you think. Surely didnt mean to offend but your opinion really interests me...don't leave me hangin'!

i LOVE this. She has such a unique voice. I'm sure I've heard it many times. I just can't think of where and it's driving me crazy. What band was she with before she was solo? Or was she? Urgh! Anyway, this is a nice catchy rhythym that dances along almost like a Luscious Jackson tune at first but coupled w/ her vocals, it really belongs in a class by itself. I don't like the male vocal that kind of hepcats around in the middle but that's just me. I prefer her sweet voice to be 'unmarred', as it were. Thanks so much for recommending this. Yeah. Is spotted that. I'm already familiar with "Freedom of '76" and it didn't really appeal to me either. I'll try "Piss Up A Rope" when I get home tomorrow night.
I didn't tag it but I did download your Cranes suggestions and it's a cracking little song. It's got a hint of The Cure circa their "Disintigration" album (it's all about doom laden synths) and the persistant guitat line that runs throughout the song reminds me of "Cannonball" by The Breeders. It's a cracking little song. I always did like The Cranes but for one reason or another didn't really get beyond buying a couple of singles. It means a little more when you know that the Cranes were doing it long before anyone else. It had to start somewhere and I feel it's much darker than the obnoxious imitations that are more recent. Her voice is so eerily little-girl-like it threatens me...ha. But, you can't win them all. ;)

I'm so glad you like Leonard Cohen. He's one of the best songwriters ever. I didnt see which song bowiee recommended but my favorites are The Partisan, Suzanne, Everybody Knows (which is also amazingly covered by Concrete Blonde),Famous Blue Raincoat, and Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye. Enjoy and I'm sure bowiee has some other suggestions.

The Charlatans-One To Another
Back when I was a youngun' I went to see the Charlatans live and they were so obnoxious that I've never cared to listen to them since. They were just one of those bands that insulted the audience by saying since it was tennessee, we must really know nothing about music...pretty damn untrue. Musically, they aren't awful and listening to this song reminds me that they are actually much better than most bands getting airplay today. Even though his voice is still not to my taste, this song is much more so and I'm glad I heard it. Kind of an uptempo song that could use a good guitar solo but doesnt suffer too much for the lack thereof.
Next Pick:
Dinosaur Jr.-Start Choppin' (One of the more fun songs of the soundtrack of my life. This album was ALWAYS in my tape player when I was dating my husband and reminds me of summertime and beautiful trees)

This song is one I feel will grow on me the more I listen to it. Even the second listen was better than the first. Certainly a song I could see associating with various memories from this point in my life, down the line somewhere. It's got a great beat and the singing is right on target, but something about it leaves me a bit off. I'll have to keep listening to this one to really know what I think, but as of now I'm enjoying it.
Here is one that incidentially, I believe was originally done by Leonard Cohen.
Song: Hallelujah
Artist: Rufus Wainwright
PS. Siren, thanks for all of the Leonard Cohen suggestions!

Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah
I'm very familiar with this particular song having long worshipped Jeff Buckley's wonderful cover version from his Grace album. Although not quite as affecting as Buckley's version this is indeed an excellent rendition of one of the most beautifully despairing songs ever written. I've long been intending to check out Wainwright. The longer this damn thread runs the more money i'm gonna have to spend expanding my musical horizons. I estimate i'll be broke before it hits 200 posts. Damn.
Anyway...next for consideration...

The man always makes me want to grab a picket sign and fight for some random cause everytime I hear him. I always wanted to hear his stuff with Wilco. This song is really straightfoward and peaceful. It reminds me of when I was a little kid listening to ledbelly and woodie guthrie records. Plus Braggs voice always makes the song. Great pick Psychocandy! Thanks. :)

Just in case you don't know and it's just a coincidence that you mentioned Woodie Guthrie. The album upon which this song resides is actually a collection of unrecorded Woodie Guthrie songs that were donated to Billy Bragg and Wilco by the Guthrie estate. The project has thus far spawned two albums (Mermaid Avenue Vol 1 & 2) and more recently a DVD (Man In The Sand) which is basically a documentary about the event leading up to the recording sessions and the actual sessions themselves. The most amazing thing is that apparently Woodie Guthrie only ever recorded about 10% of the songs he wrote. Upon his death hundreds of songs were discovered scribbled on pieces of paper and in the pages of many notebooks. Amazing. Anyway...both albums come with the highest recommendation I can possible give. I haven't got the DVD yet but I intend to.

I heard about the song donation and thats what really peaked my interest in getting more into billy brag. The mermaid avenue cd's recieved nothing but huge amounts of praise thrown on them when they were first released. I just always put off buying the albums because I would always see some other cd that I would want. I'm sure that this floating around in my playlist will remind me to get those 2 albums now though.

Always a pleasure to make the aquaintance of another Dinosaur Jr fan. "Where You Been" is one of my top ten favorite albums of the Nineties. J Mascis is terribly underated as both a songwriter and musician. If you haven't already you should definitely treat yourself to his two albums as J Mascis & The Fog. They are called "More Light" and "Free So Free". The title track on "More Light" is stunningly intense. Basically it's like a storm of guitar feedback out of which Mascis' vocals slowly surface. It's at least a minute before you realise that that noise deep down in the mix is actually Mascis singing. Absolutely blinding.

John Squire - I Miss You
Shades of Americana with this one. Although not technically a gifted singer I quite like his voice. It suits the song well. Full of character and I can see where the Bob Dylan comparisons came from. The song whilst not in the same league as anthing from the highpoint of his career that is the Stone Roses debut album (except perhaps for "Don't Stop", a song that always grated with me and I think the album would have benefited from it's absence) is better than about half of The Second Coming and pretty much anything from The Seahorses album (except Blinded By The Sun). However, it's not a strong enough song to make me buy the album. I'll keep trying to get Transatlantic Near Death Experience. I'm assuming that since that was your first choice from the album that it's a stronger song.

A very poppy song but not in a sickening way. In a want to drive on a road trip and sing it with some friends kind of way. The Lyrics are good and the music in the background is simple but interesting at the same time. At first I thought it was going to turn into techno but thankfully it didn't and this charming song followed the intro beats. The imagery plays out really well through the lyrics. I like this one alot. Thanks Psychocandy. :)

This song is so different. It reminds me of a complicated mix of the Cure (the bassline) and The Butthole Surfers (the recurring spoken voice sounded very similar to them) with a smooth pop vocal that finished it off nicely. I'm relistening to this song right now. I'm not quite sure if I like it yet. The lead singers voice is really nice but the song sounds kind of plain to me. Sonic Youth - Santa Doesn't Cop Out On Dope
Well now. Jesus Crazy Christ that was a squalling mess of a song. I'm a big fan of Sonic Youth but I have to draw a line somewhere. It was funny and I will use it to torture my friends sometime but I can't honestly say with any conviction that I will ever listen to that song for pleasure. Then again...knowing Sonic Youth and their contrary ways they never intended for anyone to listen to it for pleasure. I'm not adverse to the odd bit of feedback (my love of The Jesus & Mary Chain's "Psychocandy" album surely attests to that) but there has to be some kind of groove. A melody behind the noise that I can hang onto (even this isn't entirely true...I love the last couple of tracks on Ministry's "Psalm 69" album and they are little more than storms of feedback with nary a melody or hook in sight).
Anyway...my next choice...

Whiskeytown-16 days
Really good stuff. Actually sounds a little, music-wise, like The Cowboy Junkies. Sometimes they throw a western twang to their folk sound which works really well. Vocals are very good similar to Adam Duritz (who does have a great voice though I'm not a Counting Crows fan) but w/ the soul of the Allman Brothers. The version I listened to was the acoustic version. The album version may be a little more rocknroll but I liked this just fine. Good lyrics too.

Mercury Rev - The Dark Is Rising
This song is just beautiful. The opening swell and the calm that decends as the symphony fades and the piano and vocal take over is just such an amazing start to a song. I've read a number of reviews over at Amazon wherein the reviewers express their dislike of Jonathan Donahue's vocals. Bullshit. His voice bears comparison to that of the great Neil Young and is a perfect fit for Mercury Rev's music. I've actually had the pleasure of seeing them live when they were touring Deserter's Songs. Their performance was epically magnificent and sent more than a few shivers up my spine. An amazing band. An amazing song.

The Magnetic Fields - The Saddest Story Ever Told
I've often toyed with buying "69 Love Songs" by The Magnetic Fields but have thus far allowed myself to be put off doing so by the potentially daunting prospect of wading through 69 songs looking for the diamonds in the rough (surely all 69 songs can't be worthy of repeat listens). As a result this is the first time i've heard anything by them. "The Saddest Story Ever Told" is a pretty, sweet little slice of melancholy jangle pop with a killer hook and at just over two minutes it nowhere near outstays it's welcome. Nice choice Bowieee. I like all the energy going on in this song. The lead singers voice doesn't really click with me but the band as a whole really impressed me. Plus the song is named Brave Captain which just sounds cool so that gives it bonus points in my book. Actually i just put this on for the second time and I think the voice grew on me. I like all the energy going on in this song. The lead singers voice doesn't really click with me but the band as a whole really impressed me. Plus the song is named Brave Captain which just sounds cool so that gives it bonus points in my book. Actually i just put this on for the second time and I think the voice grew on me. Hmm I think this one will grow on me the more I listen to it.
Next up an epic song about the misery of war...
The band played waltzing Matilda
The Pogues
Just a warning the song is pretty long but I think its worth it. Its the pogues best song IMO.
Actually, I've never really been able to focus on the vocals in FIrehose...the whole thing is really about the bassline. Alot like PRimus in that respect...who really cares about Les Claypool's vocals anyway? Ha. I would tag your song but I know it so well I'll feel like I'm cheating someone else...it IS their best song, by the way...I'll tag it if no one else does.

Feel free to tag it and let me know your opinion on the song. Personally its one of the best driving around, singing with your friends songs around. :)
