There's a lot of great live material out there, but what are the BEST live (studio-produced, authorized, etc.) CDs?

I'd vote for:

Live at Leeds: Deluxe Edition - The Who
BBC Sessions - Led Zeppelin
Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue, Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan

I've heard that Bootleg Series, Vol. 4 by Bob Dylan is good, too, but I haven't heard it yet.

I will know take this opportunity to honk my own horn at having reached 1000 posts and Super Schmoe status after only 2 and a half years of being on the site. I'm a machine!

Nirvana...either unplugged or From the muddy banks....

actually i dont really like many live albums...

some live albums sound like they were recorded in a bucket. others seem to show the lack of talent some bands havbe when they dont have a producer to fix their shitty tracks.

God dammit, R & J. How's a youngster like you hip to The Kingston Trio? My dad was a big fan, and I grew up listening to them. I love their harmonies. Tom Dooley, Worried Man, MTA, Tijuana Jail. Damn, good stuff!!

Cheap Trick Live at Buddokhan is awesome, as is Frampton Comes Alive. You kiddies might not be hip.

Just got Bob Dylan: The Royal Albert Hall. Although I still like Rolling Thunder Revue better, this album is pretty sweet. I especially like "Visions of Johanna" and the section of talk before "Like a Rolling Stone".

It was really lax of me not to mention "Live Seeds" by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds when I listed my top 10 fave live albums. It's a stunning performance and was my introduction to the weird and wonderful world of Nick Cave.

KISS - Alive! and Alive! II

(These two albums essentially created the market for live albums, as in the mid-70s when Alive! came out, the live album was looked upon as a mere contract filler, and of little interest to the fans - however once Alive! had sold by the truckload - and rescued KISS's carrer in the process - record companies began to look at ive albums in a whole new lilght.....)

Iron Maiden - Live After Death

(This record for me manages to capture exactly what it is about a live performance that excites the audience. The video is even better, and although nearly 20 years old now still remains on the of finest live videos I've ever seen. This was also the record BTW that inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn to play!)

Counting Crows - a whole variety of bootlegs!

(Counting Crows are a band that change their sets on a nightly basis and always infuse such emotion and conviction into their songs. It's hard to pick an absolute favourite concert - most of their shows are available as high quality bootlegs through the official site - yep, the band condones it, realising sensibly that if a fan is going to want a bootleg, then chances are they've already got all of the official stuff!)

I didnt really like Metallica S&M. James Hetfield sounds kind of icky poo live. Also alot of the music didnt blend together like it should have. Certain songs were good, but there was some you really just couldnt symphony shit in lol. Oh well, ive heard alot worse though.

There's a song by Queens of the Stone Age that sounds like a direct ripoff of a Rush song.
