ROUND 1 - MATCH 1

The Ring VS. Signs

My pick is for THE RING (9/10 or A-). I loved it and have seen it three times, it has gotten better and better with each viewing. Naomi Watts is wonderful in it and the film has a great atmosphere and is incredibly creepy. SIGNS (6/10 or C+) was a big disappointment and wasn't the thriller it was advertised as, instead it was a sunday school lesson on faith.

And Mike, you must really like Super Troopers, it's on your list twice. ;) I suggest placing a film like Gangs of New York or Road to Perdition in its place, but that's just a suggestion. :)

Oops, I accidently put it twice. But no, I didn't like it that much. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I dislike it. Anyway, I tried not to list too many movies that are in theaters, but I did list some. I know there's a lot of movies I left out, but there's just so many that it would be impossible to include them all.

Really? I thought that when it got to a certain number you counted the votes. Wait, maybe it was as soon as one of the movies competing reaches that number then you declare the winner. So if that's the case then it would still be going, until either The Ring or Signs makes it to 20.

Hmmm..... I don't know. In the Slasher Movies tournament urbanlegend usually says how much time is left and the first time he checks back he declares the winner no matter how many people have voted.

Yeah, I've decided that's the way I'm going to do it from now on. I guess I didn't really have it too well thought out. I didn't even think about what to do if a tie happened. So from now on it will be the first movie that makes it to 20 is the winner. This way we won't have to worry about a tie happening. So THE RING vs. SIGNS is still going on. Right now SIGNS is in the lead with 12 and THE RING has 10. The first one that makes it to 20 is the winner and the other one will be eliminated.

It definitely is! I remember the first time I saw it I gave it an 8/10. But I wasn't sure if that would be its final grade because I just had to see it again to know for sure because I didn't know what to think. I knew I liked it but I didn't know how much. Then I saw it again and I enjoyed it even more. And then this last week I saw it again and I liked it more than I did the second time. It just gets better and better with each viewing. The atmosphere is perfect and amazing in it. I loved all of the gloom and rain. Plus, Naomi Watts was excellent.

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/miramax_films/40_days_and_40_nights/_group_photos/josh_hartnett5.jpg

The Sweetest Thing (7/10 or B) was a fun time, nothing more and nothing less. 40 Days & 40 Nights (7/10 or B-) was disappointing, but still watchable because of the charming Josh Hartnett. If I wasn't a fan of his, then I doubt I would have enjoyed the movie as much. He carries the whole thing on his shoulders. But, my vote goes to the fun and energetic The Sweetest Thing.

I think this has been the longest match so far. The Insomnia VS. The Mothman Prophecies one didn't take too long, I'd say about a day. It all depends on how many people are participating in the tournament and how many people have seen each movie. Since I started doing it with 15 votes, I don't really want to change it now. I know some rounds will probably take longer (like this one for example), but others will go by fast. As soon as this one is done I think the next round should be another quickie (Panic Room VS. PANIC ROOM

vs.

TRAPPED

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0280380/C2-10A.jpg

I enjoyed both movies and would give them both the same rating (8/10 or B+). Panic Room was just the same old predictable thriller, the only difference is that it looked GREAT. The cinematography was top notch. It also had a nice performance by Jodie Foster. However, I feel Charlize Theron gave a better performance in Trapped. Trapped was a very well done thriller that was more of a character study than anything. It had some real intense and gripping scenes. It got a little goofy towards the end, but until then it is a solid thriller. Since Panic Room will probably win and Trapped is already underrated enough, I'm going to vote for the excellent Trapped.

"Panic Room" was really overrated(5/10). It is sad that Fincher went "mainstream".

Trapped, on the other hand, was a fun thrill ride(7/10), so it gets my vote.

ROUND 1 - MATCH 5

THE RULES OF ATTRACTION

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/lions_gate_films/the_rules_of_attraction/kate_bosworth/rules.jpg

vs.

SWIMFAN

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/twentieth_century_fox/swimfan/_group_photos/erika_christensen2.jpg

THE RULES OF ATTRACTION (10/10 or A+) is my favorite film of 2002 so far. It was amazing and has stayed with me ever since I first saw it opening weekend. SWIMFAN (7/10 or B-) wasn't a good movie by any means, but it was a fun movie. Definitely a guilty pleasure. If you watch it to make fun of it, then it can be a very enjoyable flick. If you watch it and take it seriously, it can be a very bad flick. I had fun with it, but it's definitely not what you'd call a "good" movie. My vote definitely goes to "THE RULES OF ATTRACTION."

By the way, if you haven't seen these movies, then you can just vote for which one you'd rather see or which one you think you'd like more. There's nothing wrong with that...

Anyway, may the best movie win ;)!

Swimfan because I didn't think it was THAT awful, though it is far from great.

The Rules of Attraction, however  I really didn't get what the big deal was about, the story was weak, the acting horrible, and sometimes I felt like I just needed to carve my eyes out. 2/10

vs.

SUPER TROOPERS

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/fox_searchlight/super_troopers/_group_photos/erik_stolhanske1.jpg

Neither xXx (5/10 or C-) or Super Troopers (5/10 or C-) were very good and I'd give them both the same rating. xXx had no plot and was just plain laughable. Super Troopers was too immature and most jokes failed because of it. But out of the two, I guess I'd have to say that I found Super Troopers to be a little better. It was more entertaining and was shorter. So Super Troopers gets my vote.

What's the point in waiting when a movie is like winning 13-4 or 12-5? The other movie will never win anyway, and I think about 15 overall votes are more than sufficient when one movie is in the lead by so much... if you end it sooner the game won't lose momentum

VAN WILDER

I actuall found both of these entertaining. But if I had to watch one of them again, I think I'd rather watch The New Guy (7/10 or B-) over Van Wilder (7/10 or B-). The comedy in Van Wilder didn't work that well for me, I found the movie entertaining, but the jokes were a little too immature. Ryan Reynolds, Tara Reid, and their cute romance is what worked for me in that movie. So, my vote goes to The New Guy, which didn't start out that good, but got better and better along the way.

screamer581

The New Guy (2/10) was my #2 film on my "Worst of 2002", Van Wilder (5/10) wasn't a masterpiece by any means either, but at least it wasn't painful to sit through. So it gets my vote.

Although I enjoyed Sweet Home Alabama (8/10 or A-) quite a bit, my vote still must go to the original, witty, and all around great romantic comedy Kissing Jessica Stein (9/10 or A-). Kissing Jessica Stein is one of the years best films and destined to be a classic. Along with When Harry Met Sally, Kissing Jessica Stein is my favorite romantic comedy of all time. Sweet Home Alabama sure was cute and entertaining, but there's no denying which is the all around better film. Without hesitation, my vote goes to Kissing Jessica Stein.

I don't really want to though, since pretty much every tournament seems to have it and I'm sick of seeing it win everything all of the time. I'd much rather see something else get a chance instead of be clobbered by this big blockbuster that wins everything. Nothing has a chance against it, and I don't want this to be just another tournament where LOTR is the champion.

I'd much rather see something else get a chance instead of be clobbered by this big blockbuster that wins everything. Nothing has a chance against it, and I don't want this to be just another tournament where LOTR is the champion.

But if this is to find out what we think is the best of 2002, dont you think that if we think its the best it should be in the list?

I agree.

It's like telling the Lakers they can't play in the NBA anymore because everyone's tired of them winning the championship.

You're not truly finding out what everyone thinks is the best movie if you're leaving it out because of personal bias.

I just don't see why every tournament has to include it. Besides, I can't include EVERY movie from 2002. And it's not to find out the best of 2002, it's to find out the best out of the movies included in the 2002 tournament. I can't include every movie that someone wants in the tournament. I don't care if it was the #2 grossing movie of the year, that doesn't matter to me, but not every movie needs to be included. There's movies missing from other tournaments too, but that's just the way it is. Like I said, I can't include every movie. I've made the list, and I don't plan on changing it again. There's enough movies right now and it's already going to take awhile to get through them all. It's not just because I don't think it looks good (afterall, I did include other stupid looking movies (Gangs Of New York, Road To Perdition, etc...)).

If my calculations are correct (which they're probably not), KJS just needs two more votes to win.

Actually, I counted 14 for Kissing Jessica Stein and 5 for Sweet Home Alabama. Who knows, maybe I messed up though. But if I'm right, Kissing Jessica Stein only needs one more vote to win.

Yep, you're right, I missed PorchRacer's vote down near the bottom of page 6, I told you I was probably wrong.

Mr. Deeds (6/10 or C+) was okay entertainment, but worst than I thought it would be. The best thing about it for me was Winona Ryder, she looked great and "stole" the show ;).

Orange County (8/10 or A-) was hilarious though. A very clever and witty movie that's majorly underrated. I don't know why more people didn't love it. I laughed my ass off. I think it's a very well done teen comedy.

My vote definitely goes to ORANGE COUNTY.

***Remember, the first movie with 10 votes wins***
