Ok, so, I just saw Gangs of New York...and after seeing some of his other roles as well, I am thoroughly convinced that I'd be hard pressed to find a better, more diverse actor.
Anyone else have thoughts about this fantastic performer?

Has a whole body of excellent work behind him, especially Last Of The Mohicans, In The Name Of The Father and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Is also apparently a gentleman and is refreshingly devoid of Hollywood artifice.

Yes, I agree, he's one of THE most talented, gifted, diverse actors out there who I just can't help but love. He's not the best but he's up there with De Niro, Pacino, Hoffman, etc.

In December, my psychology teacher showed the whole class My Left Foot and this was the first Daniel Day Lewis movie I've ever seen. His performance of Christie Brown was very well done. I haven't yet seen Gangs of New York, but I want to.

I think I only saw him in GONY and The Last Of The Mohicans (at least these are two I can remember) and he was brilliant in both movies. I just loved him as Bill in GONY! Fabulous acting!

In my opinion, the best actor going today. Pacino's kinda just getting paid at this point, he's not giving his best. Deniro's still at a high level. The age of innocence has a superb performance by Lewis, he plays the understated and respressed with flawless execution, then comes back and plays a raving psychotic with equal flair. To hell with the pianist, lewis should have been best actor!

GREAT ACTOR.
Some bio:
Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis (born April 29, 1957) is a British actor.
Although born in London he holds an Irish passport as his father was the Anglo-Irish poet Cecil Day-Lewis, Poet Laureate of England. His Jewish mother is Jill Balcon, actress daughter of Sir Michael Balcon, head of Ealing Studios.
Daniel Day-Lewis is considered to be one of the most gifted actors of his generation. He is known for his total devotion to the role he plays, before filming Gangs of New York he reportedly became a butcher for several months. He was trained on the stage, in Bristol, but he made his film debut in Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971. He then went back to the stage in both Bristol and London, and did not return to movies until appearing in a bit part in Gandhi in 1982.
In 1984 he had a supporting role in The Bounty, but came to public notice as half of a gay biracial couple in My Beautiful Laundrette. This role was followed by a completely different character in A Room with a View in 1986, where he played a snobbish, clumsy upper-class-dandy. The latter two films opened in New York City on the same day. In 1987 he assumed leading man status in Philip Kaufman's The Unbearable Lightness of Being co-starring Juliette Binoche.
His performance as Christy Brown in Jim Sheridan's My Left Foot (1989) won him numerous awards, including the Academy Award for best actor. He returned to the stage to work again with Richard Eyre, as Hamlet at the National Theater, but was forced to leave the production close to the end of its run suffering from exhaustion, and has not appeared on stage since.
Other film roles have included The Age of Innocence co-starring Michelle Pfeiffer, In the Name of the Father, The Crucible with Winona Ryder, Last of the Mohicans, Gangs of New York with Leonardo DiCaprio and The Ballad of Jack and Rose.
Daniel Day-Lewis is married to actress and director Rebecca Miller, daughter of Inge Morath and Arthur Miller (author of The Crucible). They live in Ireland and have two sons. Day-Lewis also has a son from a former relationship with French actress Isabelle Adjani.
Academy awards and nominations
2002 - Nominated - Best Actor in a Leading Role - Gangs of New York.
1994 - Nominated - Best Actor in a Leading Role - In the Name of the Father
1990 - Won - Best Actor in a Leading Role - My Left Foot

I was never big into "period pieces" like The Madness of King George or The Alamo, but The Last of the Mohicans changed my mind. He was friggin excellent in that movie. (Wes Studi did pretty well too, but this is about D.D.L, so I digress)
Yay.:)

I'm sorry, this is the reverse. Pacino in the last couple years did a dated Shakespear play as a film [Merchant of Venice] and a mini series about AIDS [Angels in America]. What has DeNiro done? Uh, Hide & Seek and Meet the Fockers.
As for Day-Lewis. To the Butcher.
Yay.

YAY
The first performance I saw him in that caught my eye was as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. Fucking amazing. One of the best actors around today. I know I've said it heaps of times but I'll say it again anyway:
Daniel Day-Lewis was robbed of his Oscar for Gangs of New York!!!
Also gives a great performance in The Crucible. Look particularly for his "Because it is my name!" speech in this film. Good stuff.
